View Full Version : should I give up enchanting for herbalism?

Early in my career as a Mage I went where most all other mages go - Alchemy/Herbalism. Got Alchemy to 300 and had herbs around the 280 mark, then TBC got released and since I had a large stash of gold I power-leveled myself to 300 Enchanting just in time for the upgrade thinking that Enchanting will give me better returns in TBC.

Now, Alchemy is at 350 and my Enchanting is barely 305.

The enchanting was/is good for useless soulbound rewards or green/blue drops and I can sell 20 arcane dusts for around 40g approximately. The shards vary in price but usually 7-10g on my server depending on the time. Plus I can enchante my own armor for some nice bonuses.

However, I'm pouring a load of gold into buying herbs to make my pots/elixirs! Terocone is INSANELY priced and it hurts my heart because I'm running around Tekkar Forest and seeing loads of Terocone just sitting there! Meanwhile all I've been able to do with Enchanting is disenchant things for arcane dust.

Should I cut my losses and switch to Herbalism - go back to Azeroth and power level herbalism in the low areas enough to be able to pick Terocone and Dreaming Glory and other high-level herbs for profit?

Rule of thumb:

Enchanting will not make you money. Now, some do make money with it but most never recoup their cost to level it.

Gathering professions make money.

Do what you will, if you have time to run around and herb..then i guess thats a good idea.

I've found that you can go kill blood elves in mass then sell the netherweave/arcane tomes/signets for a greater profit than running around the forest looking for flowers. That is, if you are farming.

My wife is droppping 375 herbalism for tailoring today. She has 375 alchemy. The thing is, we get on and do 5 mans. we don't run around the forest.

Dropping herb is easy, its easy to level up..

dropping 305 enchanting well.. thats like literally burning money.

I used the power-leveling enchanting guide on these forums and it was easy enough to get to 300. Probably invested around 400-500g in the process (can't remember even though it was only 3 months ago) - but back then 100g was hard to gather - now it TBC you can make gold at a steady pace.

I hear ya about the hurt from dropping 305 echanting ~ and in truth, selling 20-stacks of arcane dust does draw in some nice cash but it seems like I'm spending a fortune buying Terocone when it's right there for the picking (literally!).

my Enchanting leveling just stopped all of a sudden. I've got to save up 900g for a flying mount or I'll be the laughing stock of all lvl 70 players :)

This is a tough call.

Enchanting really only makes money through disenchanting. If you do a lot of grinding its good to have an enchanter somewhere although it doesent need to be your main character.
