View Full Version : Ridiculous Error?

I recently picked up a copy of WoW to install. First problem I had was the installer wouldn't run off the CDs. So I tried the WoW tech support site's suggestion of copying the files to my hard drive to install from there. Now the installer tries to run, but it only crashes and sends me this error:
"Sorry, the installer was unable to start up. You may be out of disk space."
That's bogus. I may not have enough space on my primary drive, but I have an entire small slave HDD (10GB) to use specifically for WoW. Here's the funny part.
I emailed WoW tech support about my problem, and even though I told them "I can't install anything because the installer crashes and won't continue" their response was this:
It doesn't matter that your Master HDD doesn't have enough disk space as long as the slave does. Skip past the error and install the game to the secondary HDD.
MORONS. I said "I CAN'T CONTINUE THE INSTALLER" so how the crap do they expect me to skip past a crash error?
To get to the point... anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

That's not enough space. It needs room for at least 20 gig of space, like all installations under windows, there's many temporary files, uncompressed folders being moved around. The game itself is huge, my WoW folder is over 14 gig. I'd doubt a 20 gig would properly suffice. The game needs a huge amount of hard drive space, and all hard drives need breathing room, it's very unwise to take them within 25% of maximum capacity, if not for the simple fact some programs refuse to run when space gets so scarce, and performance in terms of response times for data take a nose dive. These patches are huge.

Good news is, hard drives are massive now, and 120-300 gig hard drives are hitting bargin bins due to the big 500-750 gig models forcing the top end. It's a very cheap, mass produce item, probably the cheapest component in a PC. A 10 gig hard drive is worth less than $15 dollars.

Crap.
Well thanks for the heads-up, I suppose I may as well actually spend money on my slave instead of just dismantling some old computer my neighbours had. I'll try that and see how it goes.

320GB are around $90 on newegg. Currently they have the best price to GB ratio. I have 2 of them in my system.

Considering less than twenty years ago, 16MB Hard Drives were worth thousands of dollars, they've become easily the cheapest components in the modern computer. It is a good time to buy large versions.

Just a random aside - I remember the first HDD I put into my XT - oh probably about 15 or 16 years ago now but memory might be a bit off. Double bay height, hefty and had a massive 10mb of space. It felt as if I'd never run out of room. 10 million odd bytes of storage? Bliss...

And now I'm looking at my svelte 320gb drive and thinking. One of these just isn't enough, now is it?

Ahhh...Memories...

I used to work production at Micron PC back in '96-'97. I remember when the $1200 9GBs came out...

I remember salvaging a pair of old 7200RPM 10 gig drives off a server that has been throne away by our local telephone exchange. Loudest things I've ever heard. I hear people complaining about fan noise, whining water cooling is the old way to have tolerable sound levels; and laugh to myself. Such a racket, but brilliant peformance coupled with my old Pentium II and a trusty Rage Fury 3D accelerator card. They don't make them at all like they used to. Ten years in this field is a lifetime.

Three years ago, single core Athlon 64s were considered the best of the best. This year, thier more powerful relations, Athlon 64 Dual cores, are hitting the bargin bins on mass and are now sub-$100. Progress is good.
