View Full Version : Performance Standards?

What are they? Are there any?
Reason I ask... I'm looking to see where the "baseline" for mods/pc performance should be.
FPS:
Mem usage:
Mod mem usage:
Mod load time:
Garbage size:
Ect ect ect... Maybe, start posting everyones results? To see where everyone runs? Also, I am not sure where to set the memory usage for the mods. There a nifty calculation formula type of calc algorithm that you need a super computer to figure out based of of cpu or mem capacity? LoL!
Also, is the mod WarmUp the defacto standard for polling these results? TIA!

Enough that your PC doesn't lag?

Nod nod...
Reason again, why I bring this up. I had been running at 70 FPS, and here lately, I've been getting shot down to 50/60 FPS. And its noticeable, cuz it will jostle, and lag a hair. Nothing major, nothing minor even. But noticeable. And I thought that I had a pretty good machine, enough to hold a TON of mods, but... I find myself deleting more and more just because I'm losing my FPS. But... If this is all normal, and everything is working "at the baseline" then I shouldn't be worry'n.
Make sense? =D

Turn off each Mod one at a time and find out whats causing the lag.
My current UI uses about 28mb however the previous one used 38mb. Never had lag with either one. I had one that used 35mb and lagged like a biatch, found the culprit, turned it off, all was fine. It all depends on your computer spec and addons, there is no baseline as such.

Yeah, thats what I'll hafta end up doing. I can't disable ALL mods. As my DSSetup is needed absolutely, no matter what... But I suppose I can start then disable/enable game.
Well... I think a baseline, "normal" is a good idea, but I see why you say that it might not work. I'm just frustrated, because I don't know if if its the area that I'm in (outlands) or what. Because in IF, and/or other "older" areas, I was getting the 70 FPS, but now I'm not. *shrug*
Also... What about bandwidth usage, what do most of ya'll get on a day to day? ^^ TIA!

i play on about 11FPS fine lol

~10-20FPS. Use to run with 60-70mb in mods. Now I run at about 40-50. I was at 25, but some new exciting mods appeared. Fubar plugins are too abundant! FPS remained the same unless I popped into BWL, that right there killed my connection. I play on dial up btw.

Oye... 11 FPS? That with everything turned up? I've got all options up and on to get the best "look" (still not 100% what to have enabled to have the best quality still... ugh...) I'm starting to think that its not the low FPS that I'm noticing, but when it goes from one extreme to another. Aka... Lag. Am I correct in assuming this then? Its lag, not a FPS issue. I doubt its a memory problem. 2 GB "should" be enough. Having said that. What is TOO much for that amount?

sheykh, 2gb of ram is sufficient (more than enough) for WoW as Blizzard never really make hogging computer resource intensive games like BF2, BF2142 ie. EA games.
Anyway, fps isn't really as important in RPG games like it is in FPS games where almost every frame counts. So, sheykh I also tend to agree that it could be computer lag. I'm guessing that it might be due to too many programs (or even viruses, malware) running in the background? Another possibility is it could be net lag and not computer lag?

I play with about 8 - 15 FPS doing quests and what not, but flying - i see a frame every 20 seconds or so. :undecided:

I'm running a lot of addons, but they're all Ace2 with the optional external libraries installed, and I range 17-20 MiB (20 in mid-flight) overall. I usually force a garbage collection when I hit around 19 to keep it clean.
Edit: I usually run an increasing mem rate of around .1 KiB. I've seen as much as 1 KiB increase at time. I range 10-25 fps, but only because my computer sucks.

I know that FPS isn't AS critical as it is in 1st person games... (I almost said "I know that FPS isn't AS critical as in FPS's... Hahaha, but that, is almost... Confusing, hahahaha!) But... When I quit a while ago (computer issues *cough cough*) was because, when doing raids, and getting 10 FPS, I was going from full health, raid fine... To raid not doing so good, screen blinks, and I'm dead, and it "might" have been avoidable had I known what was going on... LoL! But now I've got a new machine. And its ONLY for gaming. IE no malware, no spyware... Its pretty locked down, and like I said. Its only for gaming, I've got my old machine *cough cough* for "testing"... heh...
So, with 2GB RAM most def NOT the issue... And I know its not my 8800GTS vid card thats the problem (on a side note, bliz and nVidia need to get together sometime to fix those DAMN DIRTY BLUE BARS!) *fixes tie* Sorry about that... That got away from me there... AAaaaaannnyways. So its not the vid card. And I'm assuming that SATA 3.0Gb/s probably isn't the problem. E6600 is NOT the problem... So, its not my computer. The ONLY other two issues that it might be.
Is a linksys router (which I'm in the works of dropping, and using a straight connection to my modem, and using the second NIC for connection to my network, IE now having a "gateway"... But I'm still researching that...)
Or my internet connection itself. Having said that... What SHOULD a good, solid connection be, to alleviate any "network lag"? I've got cable modem. And I pay for 12MB down... 1.5MB up.... (But lets be honest here. Its a shared bandwidth. BLAH!!!!! So when I get home from work, your telling me that because every mom, an pop, an bro and sissy is on their computer, I don't get the speeds that I pay for? Grrrrrr.....)
Blah blah blah... Ok, I've rambled enough. Connection speeds? =D

On Dial-up I range from about 300-400ms at most times. In bad situations 500-800. I sadly do see it hit 5kms sometimes especially when raiding. Dial down speed is fine, its my up speed that needs a kick in the pants.
Make sure your data mining mods are at a minimum. Cart_gather addons are the only ones I use really.

Nods, I'm starting to think that all those "information gathering mods" that I do so love, might need to go... =**[

I've found two interrelated factors that seem to be more significant than the hardware specs of the computer, if you can believe that.
If I have no addons installed, I get 60 FPS. If I'm running a non-trivial program at the same time as WoW, I get 60 FPS. If I have addons and run non-trivial windows programs, then my FPS drops like a rock. I was originally using Cosmos, until I found that having Cosmos installed and having Firefox up to check websites would drop my FPS to the 5-15 range. As soon as I'd exit Firefox, the FPS would go back to 60. This is on a machine not that far below yours, so the hardware isn't the issue. When I switched over to Ace/Fubar for my UI, things got quite a bit better (usually in the 25-40 FPS range), but if I got too busy with Firefox, I could still drop down to the 10-15 FPS range. I think it also depends on what sites you're pulling up in Firefox.
I experimented with using Opera instead of Firefox, since everything I've heard says that Opera is more economical on system resources than Firefox is for most things, but that seemed to have no effect at all.
Switching from Gatherer to Cartographer+herbalism/mining/treasure modules did help a bit, at least.
As for FPS not mattering as much since this isn't a FPS, that is true, but I find movement via the keyboard to be rather unreliable at less than 15 FPS. I don't know if this is visual lag or the computer itself lagging, but I can definitely feel the difference.

yes opening firefox in the background and opening something animated (flash for example or heavy animated gifs) will drop framerate alot, also leaving torrents on will eat up alot of cpu cycles.

If you are experiencing lag mid flight, try zooming in to first person view, then staring straight up at the sky

Well, normally... I don't have anything running. No FF, no explorer. Well, I take that back. Winamp is usually bustin a tune or two out for me... ;]~
But if I need to check a site for some info, I write it down, and check it later. And if I HAVE to get the info now (usually because I'm doing the 6 hour quest grind...) I already have the laptop open and running next to me. So... As far as locally issues are concerned, the only think I can think is the mods that I'm running. Next week when I'm able to get on, I'll get a good benchmark of what I'm running (using the FuBar PerformanceFU mod) and then get a list of all the mods that I have installed (and activated).
If I find that I'm not logging a particular class much anymore, I've started disabling that mod. Does that mean that the mod won't work, but still taking up memory? I never thought of that till now... LoL!
Back to the laptop... And local machine req's... Since I'm not using my gaming computer to do research. COULD it then only boil down to a bandwidth issue? What should I be getting with a cable modem. And whats more important really... download or upload in MMORPG's? I would think that the latter would be more important with FPS... But then again... *shrug*
Thanks again for everyone's input! =D

Ah a laptop, remember to turn off all powersaving thingies cuz when I play on my GFs laptop it turns down the gfx card speed when the battery is low and framerate drops from a lowely 30 fps to an unplayable 10 fps.
