My noob question of the day.

My Warlock came with a dagger, but is that the weapon I should use later on?

I'm lvl 8, so it hasnt made much difference either way, I dont even use the dagger, just spells.

Should I be looking for a good staff or wand? Or can I use a wand/shield combo on a warlock?

Thanks,

Mystic:smiley:

Warlocks can't use shields.

You can equip a wand and a melee weapon, but you can't use both at the same time. Get to an Auction House and buy the low level crafted wands, they are excellent into high teens (upgrade when you hit new wand level).

Best weapon, the one that gives the best stats, for most casters this is Int and Stamina, although warlocks tend to favour stamina usually. Spirit is semi useful for a caster but if offered a choice between stam, int &/or spirit go for stam & int.

My lock uses a staff.... as she learns how to use it (after the initial training of course), she is getting better at it.

As a lock, you don't need to melee.... Send your pet and cast from afar.

did you get your Voidwalker yet?

I forgot when I got mine (maybe it was level 12... i'm 17 now)

Yes, as one of the casting classes (Warlock, Mage and Priest), you look for weapons that enhance your stats and abilities.

+stamina and +intelligence are the main bonuses a Warlock will look for. Mages look for the same, but focus more on +intelligence usually. Priests like both stats, as well as +spirit. +spirit is okay for you, but certainly don't something you need to go out of your way to get. You will gain abilities to help manipulate your health and mana pools with your pet.

Staves are usually the weapons of choice. Most are made for casters, and offer high bonuses. There are also quite a few caster daggers and swords out there, so do not overlook those. You can sometimes get a better set of bonuses out of using a dagger/sword and an off-hand item than you can with a comparable staff (which is a two-handed weapon). Higher level weapons will also begin offering you +spell damage, which is another bonus you want to look out for.

Don't worry about the attack speed or damage a weapon can do, you will never be concerning yourself over that. Early on you will probably be using a weapon to attack creatures after you've cast a few spells and are low on mana. Once you find a wand, though, you will find that your weapon will be sitting on your back/belt for most of rest of the game. The only time you will actually swing the weapon in combat is if you're bored of using a wand, want to conserve mana, and far outclass the creature you're fighting.

Level 10. Level 20 you get to go on the Succubus quest. Sorry, no Incubus to be had for you female Locks.

Thanks for the help, I bought a cheap green wand in the Auction House. I just got the Voidwalker, and I must say that life is much much easier now!:afro:

I have my first 2 points in Affliction, but not sure what skills are good and bad really. I guess Ill find out by trial and error. Is there anything in the Affliction line that I should stay away from?

It's been a while so don't take this as Gospel, but I think that Improved Drain Soul is still bugged and even if you spend both points on it, it still acts as if you've only spent a single point. Most Locks don't think that Improved Curse of Weakness or Improved Curse of Agony are worth the talent points either.

Improved Corruption and Demonic Embrace are considered corner stones afaik.
Then again, I haven't played a Lock in a loooooooong time.

Might want to ask some questions on the Lock forum. They don't bite and if they do.. Just report them and we Mods will do our thing.

It's ok... I think i'd relate more to a Succubus. I cant wait to get her too!

I wanted my name to be Succubus but i didnt know there was a minion called that.... So i researched and found Naamah, the evil goddess of seduction. How perfect to have a succubus!

I love running my Warlock -
I'm 29th level right now, and I switched to swords;
reasons:
#1 - I found a sword that is much better than my staff;
#2 - I received an off-hand item that gives me +50 armor (not huge, but a nice freebie)
#3 - As a human, I get +5 to my skills with swords. Not a real consideration, but it's there.

btw, I use wands most of the time (well I did until a glitch now I'm back to it)
but I still like to get in there and mix it up with the sword when I'm farming with lower level beasts - at my level, and with this sword and armor bonus,
I clean up in melee (against lower level things, that is) :P

But against real threats - it's minion/spells/wands!

Summary - previous posts were right - go with what gives you the greatest benefit stat-wise --- I have all my combat abilities maxized per level - it's not really a waste of time because I do it when farming gold, materials, skins, etc, so I have swords, staves, unarmed, wands all maxed out at each level (I got disarmed by some Rogues a few times and found that my hits were almost as pathetic as the Void Walker's - or as I call him, Void Whiner - so even my unarmed is maxed out!

:grin:

The best thing to do with weapon types is to learn all of them that are available for your class, and periodically pull out a weapon of a type that you haven't used in a while, and build your skill up with it by grinding out some low level mobs and then slowly make your way up to your level.

This way, if you ever come across a weapon type that you can use and makes you drool all over yourself because of it's 1337 ub3ness you're prepared.
