Hi :)
I just recently began playing wow so I was hoping you could all help me with a question: I've noticed some people have pets that help them kill monsters. And I was wondering: can all classes have pets? and if so where would I be able to get one??
thanks in advance for your help

Hunters are the only ones with true pets, warlocks can have minions. You can buy a "pet" from the auction house, but only for looks, doesnt help out in battles. start up a hunter toon and see if you like it, most of the beasts in the game can be tamed and become a pet.

Some of the other classes can get temporary 'pets' as well, minions that will help in a fight for a brief period of time before disappearing. Mages can get a talent that allows them to summon a Water Elemental that lasts about a minute, I believe. Druids have a high level talent that allows them to summon 3 Treants for a similar amount of time. Priests have a high level spell called Shadowfiend, which creates a cute little shadow beastie that attacks their target, and give them mana back, but it only lasts 15 seconds.
There's also a couple of items that will summon creatures to fight for you, also for only a short period of time.
It's only Hunters and Warlocks that get true 'pets', creatures that will fight for you for as long as they're alive. Hunters can go out and tame most any Beast in the game to be their pet. Warlocks are able to summon one of a limited number of demons to fight for them.
Other than that, as the previous poster said, you can buy Vanity Pets, who will run around with you, but don't have any combat abilities. Cats, snakes, owls, worg pups, spiderling, dragon whelps ... all kinds of cute critters!

Are mechanical squirrels capable of fighting?
... I've always wanted to know this and only ever had obtuse answers :(

Ah no. They are just a vanity pet, and are absolutely worthless for anything except being cute and following you around.

*sob*
But they're level 15 and everything, they ought to do something!
- thank you for the useful and helpful answer, any time I've asked before I've been smirked at and then had comments about touching their nuts

 I'd try to steal them back. Problem is I'm probably the most pathetic player ever to sign on to wow. Tho good news is: My ability to find my own body has increased dramaticly :D. First time I died I thought I was dead and gone like in hc d2. So I restarted the char. No much loss there. I was only lvl 1 and hadnt even seen a monster. Second time I died took me 2 hours to find myself. Only difference is by then a friend had said I could get my own body. So no need to restart. Which was good since by then I was a huge lvl 3. Now it only takes me 10? minutes of walking around like a total idiot and bingo there I am. then 2 minutes later I die and start the long walk to my body all over again

LOL, I remeber those days of trying to find my body. It's actually pretty easy though. there is an arrow on your mini map that points the way to your body, just walk that way and you'll find it. There is no graveyard furher then 3 minutes walk from any point in the game. Also, you can open your world map, it will show a picture af a tombstone, that is your "Corpse" and a dot were your "Spirt" is. Just walk your "Spirt" to your "Corpse", (The tombstone on the map)

I disagree, if there is a mountain in the way, then it generally takes a lot longer. Also spent too much time in the barrens which doesnt seem to have a convenient grave yard near most bits. In fact the one I went to last night in Stonehalon Mountains, I spent ages walking around the mountain range following the arrow before realising I should just walk around.

lol, I remembered the first time I died far away from the graveyard. I had walked off the side of a mountain and hit a tree in the middle of no where. Once I finally found my body I was like, "what do I do now?" (I was an idiot and didn't know I had a hearthstone)...long story short. I died 5 more times getting to the bottom where it was just water...swam for about 45 minutes, and then found my hearth stone..
ooh the good old days where you had no clue what you were doing - wait, I still don't.

A hint: Press Num Lock which puts you in auto-run mode so you don't have to hold down the W key.

The stonetalon GY is a pain - but if you get ganked enough you'll find the 3 minute rule to be pretty true - just takes a few ghost runs to corpse to get it figured out .... lol
Opening world map helps - and watching mimi map for direction is a must IMO.
I learned the hard way the rez sickness is not a "good thing" ... therefore the ghost runs.

Yeah I eventually figured out the runs in the barrens, only went to the mountains for the first time yesterday evening, as I realised I had a few quests in that general area, which I thought I would try. Have done two of them so far, but know I need to hit Windshear Creag (or something like that) to do a few more.

If you haven't already, be sure to get the FP at the retreat in Stontalon MNT's. You can hearth at the inn while your questing up there too. There is a path leading out back of the retreat area that will cut down some run time for Harpie quests once you reach that level. Watch for gankers - I had a horrible time up there and went to Thousand Needles instead - still get ganked some but not as bad so far.

Yeah have the FP and had already set the hearth so once I was done at the lake, I accidently died so I rezed and hearthed and then flew back to a city to get my equipment fixed.
