I just hit level 300 blacksmithing, so I finally have access to Fel Iron items (yay for no more Mithril or Thorium). I'm a Master Hammersmith, and am working up smithing to get Thunder. My questions would be... Where is the best place to farm Fel Iron ore (I did a lap around Hellfire and only found 3 deposits...), can I go 300-350 on just fel iron, and approximately how long will it take to farm the materials for Thunder once I hit 350?
Thanks in advance... n00bs. =)

Best place for Fel Iron as soon as you reach Outlands is behind the dark portal, plenty of nodes and no mobs to deal with. Only problem is that it gets farmed a bit now. Other than that, make sure you check any caves you come across, they always have mineral nodes. By lvl 63 and after having crafted as much fel iron gear as possible, I had about 400 fel iron ore sitting in my bank just from mining what I came across as well as doing a dark portal run every time I came on.
I took my mining from 300-375 from only Fel Iron mining and from memory I took smithing from 300 to about 330-335 on Fel Iron items, then had to farm adamantite to continue to 355 or so as you can craft the adamantite weapons using only ore.
I farmed the mats for my Thunder in under 12 hours after reaching 70. I used a combination of the elemental plateau and the netherwing area in shadowmoon for the motes of air, then used the lake just outside shattrath for the motes of water. As for Khorium, I had about 4 stacks by the time I reached 70 so that wasn't a problem. Nagrand was the kindest to me for Khorium spawns.
Don't forget that you should be busy farming mats at lvl 60 for your Great Earthforged Hammer at lvl 65 (unless you get the Honed Voidaxe straight away, then you don't really need to).
EDIT: I forgot, purchase the plans for Lesser Rune of Shielding and use that to level up from 340 to 345 as it only needs 1 adamantite bar. Then I think I did adamantite cleavers from 345-350, then use the adamantite weightstones (1xadamantite bar 2xnetherweave cloth) to level up from 350 to 355.

I'm 70 already, just rerolled to smithing (already had mining at nearly 300) to get the epic 2h. I'm just looking for the fastest way to crank up my smithing to 350 and then get my mace, not too worried about 350-375 because I won't have the mats for Deep Thunder for a long time anyway.
So the way it sounds is that Hellfire is the best place to farm for the ore? Then That should get me to about 335 or so smithing, so I can make adamantite weapons until 350? Then taking a break to farm mats for mah hammer.

Well behind the portal is great if it's not being farmed but if you're lvl 70, just to flying laps around Shadowmoon, I always find so many fel iron deposits that I don't bother stopping any more.
Yeah fel iron only and adamantite only items will get you to 350. I can't remember the exact sequence I used but I just remember absolutely racing to 350 then coming to a halt thereafter.
You'll enjoy the feeling after finishing your Thunder! Very satisfying but only if you can get over the feeling of using up about 1000g worth of farmed primals on one item

Sadly, Blizzards system is so totally and utterly broken that it would have taken me 4-5 or more hours to farm the ore I needed to level my smithing, yet it took me one hour to farm the gold to buy said ore off of the auction house.
That aside, I hit 350 last night, now I'm working on farming for my Thunder... Ugh.

That's not broken. That's economics!

It's not broken at all. When I levelled my smithing, I was in the low 60s so gold wasn't as plentiful as it is at 70 and also, Fel Iron ore stacks cost about 20g at that time as it was the first week of release.
You're only really saying that the economics make the system broken because you're level 70 and get 10+g for every single quest you complete and Fel Iron stacks for for ~6g now. The trade skill system is designed so that people of any level (in the bracket) can put in a bit of work and come out with the same result.
When you do the gathering and crafting all by yourself it's a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.
If you don't think mining is worth it then go drop it and take up a different profession (skinning maybe) and buy all your ore from the AH. You'll soon realise that the whole reason behind that bit of extra time and effort is so that 1) you have money for more important things (eg. epic flying skill) 2) you have the opportunity to gather not only ore but motes of fire/earth as well as eternium ore and green/blue gems.
Maybe I'm just insane in my thinking, I just like doing it all myself. I levelled smithing and mining from 1-300 without buying a single item from the AH. I didn't even have the imperial plate gear as I was, and still am, a weaponsmith. Sure 280-300 was insanely difficult seeing as though I needed a huge stack of star rubies and upward of 500 thorium ore but I did it and it was great, especially since I'd only just changed from herb/alch a few weeks before.
Moral of the story is to enjoy your gathering and crafting, it'll make those long farming stints that much easier and once you realise the benefits of just doing it yourself, then you'll be happier to do it.

I don't know about you guys, but hitting 360 with BS is like running into a brick wall. 360+ is going to be a real pain in the arse. lol

Getting to 360 was fine....it's just the rest. 360-375 is basic if you do heroics and stuff to get all the faith in felsteel set plans, all they need is felsteel to craft. For the rest of us, the main options will be crafting Khorium gear and Felsteel Whisper Knives for anyone with the mats.
