Pre BC i had 300 Tailoring / 315 Engineering as a gnome mage.
Tailorings obvious, but i used engineering for my guilds benefit, repair bots, cables etc.
Since BC i've hit 375 tailoring, but left engineering at 325. Only made repair bots, and thats stopped levelling me now. And most runs now have a repair guy outside. I'd level it, but there's nothing out there at the minute i would use, that justifies the high levelling cost.
I was thinking about taking up flower picking. Give half mats to my RL guildie friend to make pots for me, other half in AH to raise some funds.
Does this sound like it would work?

Herbing always seemed a good money maker on my old server. A lot of the herbing alchemists made more money selling the herbs than they did the potions they made with them.

I haven't checked in a few weeks, but the darn herbs were selling for more than the pots they made on my server.
Too many lazy alcs trying to level =]

I think any gathering profession is viable on its own as someone will always need the mats. Personally, i love herb with alchy cuz i always like to keep a bunch of pots handy so its nice to make my own pots and sell herbs.
But to answer your question, yes herb can stand alone :)

I have skinning and Herbs. I dropped alch and got skinning b/c i had 3 friends who could make better pots that I could. I just send them flowers when i need pots and I AH the rest.
Leather, cloth and Herbs sell better than anything I have found! (but I haven't tried mining yet...)

Just the other night a guildie was extremely upset that there were no herbs on the AH, so I'm sure any gathering skill works fine without the complimenting craft...

I'm going to have to say to the OP
OMG YES!!!!!!
lol, Yes, any gathering skill is great for making money and Herb is probably one of the best. The way I see it is, BS, LW and Tailoring all make things that last. When they make an item, a piece of armor for example, it's used until it's replaced. Usually the high end crafted armor pieces require a lot of hard to get mats, so those armor pieces are not made in mass quantities. The'll make one or two, but thats its. However, Alchemists make CONSUMABLE items, "potions". When these highly sought after potions are used, there gone! so Alchemist have a need to constintly make more and more. As a result, there is ALWAYS a need for Herbs. When I had my level 60 shamen (pre-tbc) I made over 1500Gold in just a few days selling Herbs in the AH.
(Side note, Shamens and Druids make GREAT herbalists. They can pick flowers while in travel form, so they can travel faster through the map and don't have to worry about getting on and off a mount. Also, if your'e a Tuaren Shamen or Druid, you get a racial +15 to Herbing. :)

It certainly does. But at first it's not that good, although an alt of mine picked it up and by lvl 15 I had 20g, made only by alchemy, which isn't that bad for an profession, although AH will always be better.
Later on, it can make you lots of money.

Thanks for the advice. I did it over the weekend, and up to 150 now (lots of new herbies in elwyn, took ages before i could move on).
Funny situation really. Our guild alchemist is a rogue, but wanted to make his own leatherworking. So i'm gonna send all the herbs he needs when get up to that level. He saves me a furtune, so well worth losing engineering for.
I would take up alchemy myself, but don't want to lose out on the spellfire set. And his back catalogue of pot recipes is immense.

Picking Mountain Silversage nets me about 25g in about 30 minutes.
So as for a moneymaking perspective..YES.
