Hi new poster here. I searched the forums a bit and didn't see anything in reference to this, but i'm sorry if this is something that should have been easily found.
I am currently a herbalist/alchemist and was thinking of just doing gathering profs only cuz the prices of mats outweigh the price of the item generated from the mats, well on the server i'm on at least. but the problem i have relates to being able to track both herbs and veins at the same time. i thought about just writing a macro to keep switching back and forth, but the sound effect would start to get on my nerves i'm sure lol. i didn't see anything in the prof mods/macros relating to this either. i have been using gatherer for a while now and love it, but as u know it only tracks known herbs/veins.
anyone got any advise on this?

Likely you can't auto-switch, or it will drive you mad if you do.
Drop one (probably Herbs, which has one crafting profession, and keep Mines, which has three) and take up Skinning. No tracking required on skinning, and while not the greatest money-maker, it will be far more efficient than double-checking your tracking every time your minimap shifts five feet.

You can't, thats why most people don't pick both.

plus its tedious to pick everythhing. I get tired of mining after an hour

I mined for about 45 minutes once. I had the urge to punch myself in the face so i stopped and took up something useful like tailoring/enchanting.

yah plus i guess the contstant switching would hinder my casting and such. but driving me mad would be a short trip lol.

well i don't even have mining atm, i'm herb/alch right now. but just seeing how much mining stuff goes for on our server just makes me wanna get in on it. even the herbs i'm using to lvl kind of hurts cuz i could have sold them for more than the pots i created. back a year or so it even drove me crazy that my dwarf priest couldn't track veins and treasure at the same time. i wish bliz would do something bout this. just doesn't really make much sense to me why we can't track more than one at a time. but i seriously doubt i'll be dropping herb. its just too good of a match for my shammy i'm working now to be able to gather herbs while in ghostwolf.

Why would they do something about it? Tracking is a powerful convenience. Ask a Hunter. The only incentive for multiple tracks would be your main gripe - you can't choose the two best gathering professions and have it be easy to do both. I imagine that's just fine with them.
You can still gather both as you like. You just can't sniff 'em out. So just swing the camera about every now and then - you'll be doing that to make sure nothing snuck up on you anyway.

Please, having mining and herbalism isn't HARD. It would be hard to mine and pick everything that you ever come across, but if you're looking at the big picture, you can level them both up easily and whenever you happen upon one or the other at least you have the ability to get it. I do it on one of my characters and that character makes a ton of money.

the problem with mining and herbs is storage... it's hard to carry much else. leather stacks in neat piles, but if you collect a lot of different types of herbs you can have a mess in your bags. I wouldn't want to equip a special mining bag AND a special herb bag.
one or the other.. not both.
plus, you'll likely drop one eventually for a crafting profession, so either mining or herbs combined with skinning is great for the lower levels.

375 mining and 375 herbalism here.
Use a mod that tracks the nodes, gatherer or cartographer (using cartographer atm, there are files available that can pre load your maps with nodes.)
Bag space is not an issue either, if your using the professions just to make gold. Routinely list them in the AH or send to a bank alt. This also makes it easy to supply mats for your alts.

it's not too bad having both herb/mine. mining nodes only appear around rock outcrops but herbs can appear almost anywhere. just keep herb on all the time and when ever you run past some rock outcrops, then switch to track mine. there are also some zones that are almost all herbs and some that are almost all mines (SoS and Taniris (or hoever you spell it!). on my server bars of anything mithril or over are selling for at least a gold per and sometimes the ore is selling for more! gotta love thoes JKer's and their need for ore! the higher lvl herbs sell great but atm mining FTW, at least on my server.

What are those files? Where do you get them from?

What is useful to one (me:money, from the herbs/ore) might not be useful to others (tailoring is useful to you, but not very profitable [to me]...compared to mining, for example).
I agree.....Folks need to do what is fun. After all, this is a game.

Very good point! my bud doesn't have a profession with a skill over 100 and he's been 70 now for a month or two. he finds no joy in hunting down nodes or even to bother to skin. he doesn't feel like he's missed out on anything adn enjoys the game as he's playing it now.
I personal love hunting down mining nodes and such, just adds to the game I already love.

It's not a concern for me anymore... with the new gatherer option that records places where your guildies find nodes (assuming they also have gatherer) I generally have a rough outline of where to check for mining nodes even though I keep herb tracking on 90% of the time.

thanks for the input guys. my first toon way back was a rogue miner/eng so i prolly already have a good idea where to find the veins. i may just go ahead and drop alchemy in favor of mining and spend a few hours running around low lvls to get my skill up to my area. my shammy is lvl 55 atm with i think 340 herb and 298 alch, but alch just isn't making me any money. prolly actually losing it when i would have made more just selling the herbs. but i seriously doubt i'll ever drop herbs, even though ore/bars seem to bring in the most money on my server. its just way too convenient to be able to gather herbs in ghostwolf. can u mine in ghostwolf? lol
