View Full Version : A safe place to stop!

I'm running around last night finishing up some quests in outlands and I had just flown to the southern horde outpost in hellfire. call my pet, mount up and just headed out when my daughter started to cry (damn growing pains). So I quickly turn around and just blindly run back into the camp (so as not to be ganked by mob and aliance alike) and headed upstaires to comfort my daughter. Finally got her back to sleep after about 10 minutes and went back down to the computer only to find out that I have only about 400 HP left! WTF?!?!? Of course I then noticed that I had ran right into a fire pit without noticing and I was slowly getting burnt down! If it wasn’t for spirit bond being active I would have died!
Anyone else thought they had stopped in a safe place, to run say to the bathroom, only to return and find yourself dead?

Ususally once a week or so lmao
But, since I taught my pet Prowl and I'm a NE w/ shadowmeld - I rarely pull aggro while afk although I do often come back to my pet almost dead.

Yea... More times than I can count...
Ill go park myself up on the side of a hill or something. I normally will sit there for a minute to see the wondering patterns of any mobs in the area.... I think I have it figured out and go relieve myself. Come back to either being dead, or almost dead...
It doesnt happen so much when Im on my druid, I just go to cat form then stealth... But any other toon, it has happened to...

lol
This has happened to me quite often, actually. It happened the other day, inside of IF on a PvE server standing in front of the bank at the mailbox. I had just left a BG game, and having trounced them silly horde I was feeling elated. I reentered the queue, ran to the mailbox to check auctions which I saw had been completed... Then suddenly I am very very very dead. I had been assassinated by an undead male rogue, never even saw his name. He aggro'd one (one!) guard, then vanished. I found it immensely funny. Got rezzed by a Drani priest who happened to be standing there.
A similar circumstance happened to me weekend before last when I was grinding on the greater rock elementals in the Badlands. Level 41 and fighting 42 to 44 elementals for the appropriate quests. I had cleaned out a cleft in the mountains, and needed a break. I walked all the way back into the cleft, and half way up a mountain where I had seen not one mob in the hour I had been there. Went afk, came back to see the death blow from a level 44.

i was on my hunter a few weeks ago, questing in shadowmoon valley, i needed to go afk, so i mounted up and flew to a very high mountain nearby, landed on top, and went afk, i came back to see i was dead, had gone so high i had to spirit res too! :P

I had just gotten back from Zul'Farrak, so I was flying my PVP flag from the stairs encounter. I went to the inn at Gadget and logged. When I logged back in, I was dead. There must be a period of time after you log that you can still be killed, and I guess there weren't any bruiser protectors in the inn.

I think that you can just park anywhere that you think less people pass. But most of the time when I get back I'm already dead. What I did is that I call my little brother so he can "assist" me.

I did this so many times I'm excited when I come back am not dead =]. It doesn't happen any more though... when you need to take a quick bio, mount up, press space for 5sec and leave yourself hovering.

I did something similar 2 days ago on my hunter.
I had been grinding cash & adamantite in Nagrand , normally I hop on my air mount and go straight up when I need to afk.
this one time though I was way too close to the horde base there and didnt realise.
I got back in from the kitchen to find I had been shot down and killed by the 70 elite flying guard :(

Often when levelling my lock to 70 (I was Demo specced) I would alt-tab out of the game to check say quest coords because I'm too lazy to find out myself. Sometimes I would just alt-tab in the middle of nowhere and be looking for quest info for a good 5/10 minutes...then go back in game to find my Felguard at about 50 health with like 2 corpses around me... :D
Trusty old Felguard!

It's great having a pet around to help in those situations eh? I've had it where I had gone to the washroom and all of a sudden heard my boar start to squeal, get back and he's almost finished the mob off! I love that!
Bear on denfensive plus growl will usually keep mobs off me. I have come back from a bio and found my bear chewing through a mob on several occasions.

There's a reason why my first toon was a nelf priest, despite wanting a dorf with fear ward, I thought that shadowmeld would make the learning curve less frustrating :)

I have never had a NElf before but all this talk about shadow meld and being able to aim shot while still hidden sounds very cool!
I don't think there is enough NE hunters out there thou!

Poor, poor warlocks! What will they do next to this already underpowered class?

Can't use Aimed shot out of stealth any longer. That got nerfed a while ago.

on my windows box... if I have to bail out, I just hit alt-f4
closes wow instantly, and in the time it takes the server to timeout and DC me, that's normally short enough that I don't get killed by anything.

But after that you have to log in again. So I guess it would take some time but then again, it's a sure way not to die if you're afk:afro:

Log back in - less than 10 seconds on my machine..... not really an issue.

Wow... That's really sad. Hope you don't do that when an instance goes bad.

Argghh!! I bet I would be furious if that would happen to me. (Fursphere, not that I'm saying you do that actually!)

No, whats saddening is that you're so obsessed with a video game that the mere thought of suddenly having to walk away from a running machine brings you sadness.

Yep. That's it. Obessessed. You hit it on the head. You must be a telepathic genius or something to have read my mind from what ever dark whole you're in.

So while you're flaming away, I actually offered a working solution to the OP's question.
And its spelling "hole" by the way...

...yeah, log out whenever i go afk for longer than a few minutes, its not really that much of an issue (unless of course, youre on timers or something). which reminded me of that classic wow movie "ballad of the noob". lol.

hmmm well I've had shadowmeld go bad... put ghostsabre on prowl, defensive and meld... come back to being dead... only happened a couple of times - so I never avert my eyes for an instant now and pee in a bottle. Food comes in handy cylindrical packaging which can be reused for 'recycling' said food.

Start worrying when you come back and your character has more ZOMGEPIXXXX :)

I don't know how people manage without shadowmeld, that seems to be the perfect AFK tool, although I have once or twice come back to my PC to find myself at the GY with no idea what happened.
Dumbest one I did was go AFK when doing the quest with the undead sailors of the coast of the Wetlands. Plumber turned up and I'd figured I'd be safe where I was as there was nothing around to attack me... came back to find myself dead in the water. I'd forgotten to swim back to the surface and had drowned :embarassed:

I managed to out-stupid you by a good margin the other day :)
I was running a couple of low-level guild alts through BFD (so they could get the wand and shield from the nice quest in there), and was cheerfully doubling their stats with totems, healing them, and letting them kill stuff. I was showing off by casting the shammy water breathing buff on them, too.
You can probably see this coming a mile off, but I drowned mid-combat, as I was too busy watching them fight and healing. Luckily reincarnation was up, so I popped that, and cast water breathing on myself- neither of the lowbies died, but I did get laughed at (and rightly so).

There must be a period of time after you log that you can still be killed, and I guess there weren't any bruiser protectors in the inn.
Since some patch (sometime around 1.11ish?) there has been an "exit now" button on the exit game countdown box. Having died once before like this, I *think* that what happens is that if you push this you quit the client but your character stays in the game world for the remainder of the 20 seconds, vulnerable.
afking in supposedly safe spots... not usually a problem on a pve server, but... well, let's just say that the middle of the road in EPL isn't as safe as it seems ;-)
Nowdays, as somebody said, you can just mount up and hover 20' off the ground :-)
