Dueling in Un’Goro - how could he challenge me?

Yesterday I was questing in Un’Goro Crater (definitely my favorite area atm) with my dwarf hunter when a troll mage challenged me to a duel.

I heard that this was a trick used to get someone PVP flagged so I checked for other hordies. None where around (not even a rogue, I fired a flare and turned 360 degrees).

So we duel.

I defeat him.

he /waves and /salutes and /bows

End of story if it wasn’t for that huge devilsaur that showed up.

The mage got agro while he was drinking and before I could help him (I was already fighting other mobs) he died. I had to feign death to escape the same fate.

After the devilsaur is gone I resurrect my pet and the mage rezzes too.

I /wave, he /waves and I click his portrait. I couldn’t challenge him. He left shortly after and I couldn’t ask him so I’m asking you guys.

How could that mage challenged me? It was in the middle of the jungle. Can’t you only challenge someone in town?

I do that when i encounter what i supect being bots. You can challenge people to duels everywhere. Just flag PVP, challenge if he accepts and het attacks you can annoy the living hell out of him :D

But he wasn't flagged PVP.

I didn't kill him when I defeated him, it just ended as a regular duel.

On a pve server, I believe that two non-flagged players of opposite faction can duel each other.

They can indeed. When my shammy was levelling in Tanaris, the hordie duellists were all over her like white on rice, even though I wasn't flagged, due to being pretty focussed on questing. Never seen such an adoring fan base :)

I can see where the OP is getting confused.

On a PvE server you can duel with anyone, anywhere, anytime provided both consent.

However, if you enter uncontested enemy territory - usually the main cities, then you will automatically be flagged PvP. This is why you dont have bands of un-flagged orcs roaming Ironforge.

Lastly, if you stray too near an enemy NPC that is PvP flagged they will attack you. Here you have two choices: try to run without attacking, or attack back in an attempt to kill the NPC. In the latter case you will be flagged for PvP because you took offensive action against an opposing PvP toon.

Hope this clears it up.

I don't think you can right-click their portrait if they're in the other faction. /duel should work, though, even if they're flagged.

Heh. I had a similar circumstance last night on the boat from Rachet. Was playing my 19 hunter and gathering up oily blackfish and seaweed for my mage alchy, going back and forth between Rachet and BB.

Last trip back to BB and some level 14 Belf priest challenges me. Standing next to her were two skull hordies. My reply:

I'm lvl 70 shadow preist standing between two flagged lvl 70 hoard- shammy and rouge with many other hoard all around. I want to dual one, so I right click his picture out of habit...

yea, i started beating his cow hide with my mace doing about 100 white dmg and flagging myself. I just dropped shadow form and /sit until I died.

Well, from reading the other post, you've already been told how to duel the other faction.

Target the player, then type /duel Too easy.

It used to be, many years ago when the game first came out, that you could right click on an enemy factions portrait and a drop down menu would appear with 2 or 3 choices. Once of those choices was "Deul", but Blizz took that out, and now you need to use the /Duel command


As far as people using this as a "Trick" to get people flagged on a PvE Server, YES!!! this happens. So be careful. On a PvE server, the "Attack" icon DOES NOT show up when the other faction is Non-Flagged. This prevents players from accidently attacking the other faction, and thus turning on there own PvP flag, But if your in a "Duel"......... it's another story :) Players will challange a player from another faction to a duel, while the PvP flag is OFF. When the duel is accepted, they wait. When the other player starts to make the first attack, they FLAG themselves, the other player hits him, and Voila, there flagged too. It's a dirty trick, but it's effective. Once there Flagged, there buddies come out of stealth or from around the mountain on there epic mounts, and your dead.

I know this cuz I speak from expirence (I was the one who died after accepting the duel)

Nitsujcm I've done similar, but I was about level 20 and new to the game so I have an excuse :grin:

Three horde toggled PvP in front of me and started doing /chicken at me. I right clicked one of them to inspect and watched as my hunter started hitting the massive orc warrior with his puny swords. That was a painful but useful lesson.
