View Full Version : What's the best "lower" level instance runner?
Something I enjoyed doing somewhat with my 60 priest was running lower instances for content I'd never done... Problem was - he seemed very inefficient at it.
I remember a 60 Shaman once running me through RFC, and he was lightning quick... His chain lightning just smoked everything.
What I'm curious about is what class at level 60 or 70 would be the quickest, most efficient runner for lower level instances (by lower level, I basically mean the ones where a single player can run through it, without the need for anyone else helping).
By efficient, I mean not having to sit to drink, or heal up - things like that... Being able to take out multiple mobs, and what not... I know as the instances get harder, that will become harder... But there has to be a specific class that is built to be able to handle something like this.

I can't answer out of experience. However, I would assume a hunter would be excellent at doing it. I also believe a warrior would be quite good at it.

I can run WC is 12mins solo as an affliction lock. I just DoT and run.

A friend of mine did a couple of SFK runs for me as a mage and they were pretty quick. He was frost specced, but don't remember all the skills used.

mages are bad bc they have to stop and drink
rogues are really good imo, they dont take any dmg and they never need to wait for mana

Mages. Just pull a large pack, nuke 'em down with AoE. So what if you have to drink, it's still faster than killing everything one by one.

Warriors, rogues, hunters.
Mages can be good, but at a bit higher level instances they have some issues at least in my experience

Well i loved trying to solo instances. It was something to do during the 45min PvP queues (/rude @alliance queue times)
The main instance I ran was SFK...i never did it with a group til my 5th toon had past the level etc....and i liked it.
I did it at lvl 37 with my Hunter...it was tough but i mastered it rather well and it became easy to do a full clear in under 40 minutes by the time my hunter was in his mid 40's.
My priest had a horrible time...as 1/2 are immmune to shadow.
Rogue could easily do a quick "kill most of the bosses" run in 30minutes or so. Never tried a full clear though. It was slower but i was specced subtetly...went to a combat/sword spec and i killed things much quicker.
Warlock - Read Priest note =(
However late on i became obsessed with DM West and BRD. My Hunter couldn't do well at either for some reason, just coudln't get the hang of it. My Priest on the other hand...it was easy soloing trash mobs, and my priest made quick work of Roccor. Never coudl kill incendius...tried again now that priest is 65 and ti was a cakewalk. so was killing every boss in maraudon except the one ont he 'orange' side...havent tried him. Hunter did ok in Maraudon and it was fun kiting the gator everywhere =)
I did like kiting elite dragons with my hunter, like the one that spawns in burning steppes. i solo'd him a few times.
imo a rogue/hunter is your best bet.
maybe a warrior...my warrior is arm spec at lvl 32 with his WW axe...thinkin about trin Fury and DWing though. But 2-3 shotting some mobs is very fun when you string the crits.
i'd say druids as my level 70 friend ran me through SM cath about 6 times in 40 minutes... he was also agroing about half of the instance at once

lol forgot about druids...thorns+swipe and having 15k+health now can probably clear a lot of stuff at once =P
althuogh i saw a few sweet movies of a mage soloing the entire cath part of SM Cath lol that was fun to watch.
for pure 'ease' and quickness though i still feel a hunter or rogue is your best bet. unless you wan to full clear than a mage or affliction lock ot an extent.

as i play a lock, i think locks rule. as logn as u got lots of hp ofcourse.
all i do is DoT, DoT, DoT everything. /oom? lifetap+dark pact=mana full. only use pet for darkpact/bosses.
warrs might be good if they got enough hp.
rogues deff...dodge everything +quick kills
pallys....ithink ultamate solo'er of instances. quick, high survivability, can take loads of dmg. just dont get one if u want a really quick run tho.
shammys r great to
it's the class you suck the least at soloing lower instances...
that or rogue/druid... nothing faster than bypassing all game content by stealthing... then again, at lvl 60+ you wont aggro anything anyways unless you smack their face first...

Druids or paladins. Before the druid nerf, I could solo most of ramparts and all of Scarlet Stratholme. I haven't tried after the nerf yet, though.
If you're looking into clearing easier instances really fast, a mage would be the way to go.

Heh I actually think enhancement shammies will be pretty good - gift of naaru, heals, natures swiftness, fire nova totems, lightning shield.
I soloed Sunken Temple incl. the dragons and Jamal on my hunter at 70... I think I could make a good go of BRD as well.
At 70 you have to go out of your way to have a fight in an instance. I've literally stood 2 yards away from elites in Sunken Temple with zero aggro.

Protection paladin... run through the instance tagging the mobs. They'll eventually kill themselves on you.

for lower lvl instances the rogue is ok, no down time, but I have to kill everything one by one.
As for solo'ing higher instances, I'm up to LBRS. I've cleared all bosses except voone and the quartermaster. Did a few 4 mob pulls for chests as well. Lvl 70 combat.
I'm gonna try some DM next

My man Kugan has the right idea. A protection pally is awsome for soloing lower instances. Run in and aggro the entire instance, drop holy shield, ret aura, redoubt, blessing of sanctuary & consecration and watch the lot kill thermselves on you while you make a cup of tea. The ultimate instance killer.
Other than that I think a warlock would be wicked, a combination af AOE, DOTS & pet to tank should make it quick. Plus warlocks mana conservation is excellent.

I'm a mage and when I levelled tailoring I farmed Scarlet Monastery many many times for silk cloth.
Best time I recorded was just under 13 minutes from entering after the loading screen to killing Herod, just standard buffs, no pots. I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore player so I'm sure it could be done quicker.
Can't beat standing there at the end of the fight, Molten Armour on, monks drop dead

I am a lvl 50 druid but I have run SFK and I just go into bear form and aggro an entire room and swipe them all over and over. It helps that every crit that I get in swipe give me more rage.
If i didnt loot anything I could probably clear it in 30 mins.

There is really two question – which class is best/fastest/most efficient at low low instances (Deadmines, WC, SFK, up to about SM) and which is best, or even capable of soloing higher lvl instances.
For the first part- pally is probably the best – mage is good if you can get a big group and aoe them down without getting dead.
I am a priest and LOVE doing this- we are better at it than you would think if you have the right spec. (not shadow) I have reflective shield which will produce the same results as the pally, but not near as effective. I also put on my max dmg gear, play with a few mobs and see what the best rank of SW:P will kill the mob. If they have xx health and my SW:P rank 3 +dmg gear will do almost that exact amount of dmg- I use it. I will run in throwing that on every mob until I get about half mana (quite a while)- keeping my shield up the whole time, then I power infuse myself and holy nova till they all die. I go OOM and have to drink, but no as much as I had to drink as a shadow priest. I clear entire wings of an instance on one mana bar.
Rouge is good for higher lvls, but a little slow on lower lvls because you cant aoe. Hunter? Maybe- but not the best aoe – good for higher lvls again.
Druid is pretty good because of thorns, lots of HP and they have an aoe – the thunder storm.
Do a google video search for “paladin deadmines”.

I've got runs through Deadmines with just about everything. I'd say hunter or Shadow Priest. My Priest friend just basically blew everything up for me and then I looted, cutting down the instance time by about 10 min. My hunter friend can also blow through enemies pretty quickly in Deadmines as well.

My demonology warlock does extremely well soloing instances. Yes, you run into a lot of shadow immunes; that's what your fire spells and your pet are for. I ran a bunch of lowbies through SM the other day and could easily take anything up through and including the Cathedral. She can solo Uldaman reasonably easily; haven't tried anything higher than that yet.
The only problem is that you have to be careful to run the pet on passive, because if the pet is on defensive he can end up killing stuff you never touched and thereby locking out any loot drops.

hunters are excellent if you dont want to loot anything, they are by far one of the fastest.
send pet on defense mode, and auto shot everything you see...even if you pull a whole room, you survive with pet slaughtering everything you just whooped on.
rogues were very good as well.
ive had a mage pal do a sfk run for me when i was a lower level. he pulled everything up to the 2nd boss, and AoE'd everything back to the courtyard and left me all alone to loot everything until he got to the next room.
pallys used to make me laugh in deadmines...pull everything, bubble and AoE to death
all in all, id say anyclass can effectively solo anything as long as they are spec'd right...
shadowpriest/any warlock/combat rogue/bm hunter/frost mage/prot spec pally...ya know the usuals

while its true that with a rogue you have to kill every single thing....squishys cant solo some of the higher instances we can. with my 70 rogue i can solo all the lower stuff including all of mara and uldaman, i can take out selected stuff in BRD, dire maul is tough but i can take alot of stuff in there too. being able to pick and choose our targets helps out a ton too.
i usually run my twink warrior thru everything he can get in (on sunken temple right now) so he not only has the pimpest gear possible (including the epic sword from combining the two swords in ZF) but he also has tons of enchanting mats.

Destruction lock with a blueberry out. Aggro mobs, ol' blue aoe taunts, toss out a few seeds of corruption and drop a shadowfury. Boom, everyone is dead.
But I'm going to have to probably say a prot paladin would be better at this.

I say bah to shadow preist on lower lvls... I have tried it and we are one of the most mana sucking classes around, even with VT and SF- which don't workout for you on lvl 15 mobs.
Shadow has so many good points- but not having and aoe and having to use the same amount of mana to take out a lvl 10 and a lvl 40 isn't good for quick runs.

Well, I'd have to say a Shamen.
Shamens, in my opinion, are the best for it in many ways. One, When you aggro a BIT to much, they can heal themselves. Two, they wear mail, which is great for defence. Three, as he said, they have chain lightning.
Also, locks can be very good at running lower level instances, because they have high DPS. But In my opinion, Shamens are still better. (At running lower level instances.)

Sorry, my shammy is very new and I don't have all the names of moves down yet...

I can get through WC in about 30 min on my druid... Most of them mobs I can 1 or 2 shot... So I think my druid is pretty fast at it.
