View Full Version : What is this portal in Stormwind?

I've seen it before, but never paid it much attention.
And now, for some reason, I'm curious.
Did it once lead to someplace that is no longer in the game? Is there some sort of quest or chain or key to unlock the gate? Is it there to lead somewhere in the future?

I could be wrong but I think that protects SW from being invaded below the main gate. At least that's how I always viewed it.

Had same question and gave up. There is another one if you turn around ans swim a little ways - looks like a blocked off stockaids v.2.
This along with durmhold I have just written off to future expantion of the game - like AQ, ZG and the like.

What portal in Durnhold? Or do you mean in the CoT instance?

i read somewhere that this was going to lead to the district where players could buy houses and what not but blizz scrapped the plan. not sure if there was any truth to that or not.

From what I gathered, the basic idea was for there to be an instance at some point.
I'm sure someone will come around and detail you exactly what the plans were and in which expansion (17) it was planned and how cool it is going to be.
That won't be me though. All I know is blizzard hain't gotten off of their rears yet to do something with it.

As far as I know Blizzard had plans for the two portals but never really discussed what was going on. I think the rumor mill eventually settled that the one on the outer wall would lead to a player housing area, and that the one on the inner lagoon - the sealed Stockade as it were - was for a UnderStormwind kind of old sewers razed ruins kind of stuff.
At least, that's what the mill near me churned out.

That doesn't mean you know what it is. You know what might be there (by the use of "sometimes"), but you don't know what the portal is or what was planned for it.

I heard that there was going to be private housing that you could decorate etc but blizz didn't bother putting it in.

Far as I know, the one near the sealed lagoon is supposed to be the equivalent of the Stockade, only for magically inclined criminals, mad men (some would say that's the same thing but eh) and creatures.
Stockade is for regular prisoners, and you need a special prison for those with... other abilities..

Was supposed to be an instance is what I've heard as well. Just never happened. Found the name of it in an article but can't remember what it was. Written by one of the Noggaholic people I think

There has been a confirmed rumor by a blue that there will be a "guild revamp" in one of the upcoming patches. it was supposed to go in with the BC but they pushed it back to be able to fully develop. One of the features they will impliment will be a guild bank, and there have been talks of "guild housing" which may be like a clubhouse for guildies to decorate and gather in. this portal may serve as a gateway to this system.
but then if that were true there would likely be something like this in one of the horde cities as well. Having never played a horde toon beyond lvl 10 I don't know, any unknown portals like this in horde country?

None that I know of. The only thing that even remotely comes to mind is that huge empty building in the Valley of Honor, but that looks more like a coliseum than someplace that people would hang out at.

Tanitha posted a link to an ex-devs blog a while back... this guy posted an instance map... it was supposed to be the followup instance for the stockades

All this speculation, when the answer is obvious. It leads to the Cow Level.

you must be low level then...the croc is only mid40s or early 50s in level.....he is a rare mob that appears in various places through the canals of SW but i have never heard of him being under the city.

Ah, a portal to Thunder Bluff...
There are a few other random portals in the game... there's one at the end of Strat UD which I believe was originally intended to be the way into Naxx, until they put a 5-player cap on Strat... and there's one buried in the depths of Darkwhisper Gorge, which I presume is intended to be a future instance (and might lend some... well, some point to that whole area). Raid portal, IIRC.
Probably some others around that I haven't spotted :-)

Hmm, I think Naxx landed before the anti-ROFLraider caps were places on strat, scholo, ubrs etc, no? (I could be wrong, it happens :)
Still, there's precident, there's a portal into BWL in BRS (thank goodness for the teleport orb).

Nope. Strat/Scholo have been 5-man since before I was 60, and I turned 60 sometime inbetween AQ and Naxx being released.
AIUI, before this they used to have 10-man caps, which would still make it a rather stupid way to access a raid... did they used to be totally unlimited?
I have the same feelings about the BRD->MC and BRS->BWL portals... without caps you could run 40 people through easily enough, and it's a nice touch having them open out from other instances, but with even 10-man caps it would be time-consuming and a logistical nightmare.

This particular portal was designed to be the entrance to player housing as it was explained to me by my fiancee (she writes for and edits the only MMO magazine) but Blizzard never actually finished it and, supposedly, has no immediate intention of going back to finish it.

That's why most guilds had the requirement that you HAD to be atuned in order to run MC and BWL with them. They didn't want to have to wait to drag people through. Hell, even MC and BWL PUGs required you to be atuned in order to come.
As for what the Portal is, the most common thing I've heard from the rumor mill is Player/Guild Housing. Of course it could be anything at this point.

Well, yes, but presumably the shortcuts ("attunements") weren't there at the start? I'm guessing they were added in when people realised how silly it was to have to clear one instance to reach another. Especially if wiping in MC/BWL after a couple of hours would mean having to clear BRD/BRS again to get back in...

To be honest, if you are applying to a raid guild (as opposed to a guild which also takes lowbies and raids a bit), you have no business applying if you haven't done the prep work of getting easy attunements done, anyway.
Hell, it was even easier in the old world- if you think you can cut it in BWL, you certainly shouldn't have a problem with UBRS. The Karazhan key chain isn't too bad either. Well, except for one weird night where the mob repop in the Master's Cellar was being odd, and mobs popped within about ten seconds of being killed (in the cellars part, rather than the easier cave). I just couldn't get through them, though I got a lot of Netherweave cloth from trying. I felt terrible, as a holy priest friend of mine soloed that bit no problem, and as one of our guildies put it "he's not going to out-damage you unless you're AFK". I had a moment of doubt, considered deleting my hunter even, before it occurred to me that there might be something wrong.
The next day I went back, the spawn rate was normal, and I just waltzed through. Just as well that I didn't delete my hunter in a fit of frustration and self-flagellation :)
