View Full Version : List of tips for WoW..
I just thought, it might be nice to have people list little things that they know about WoW, that not everyone else might. Like leveling hints, questing hints, etc, etc.
One thing I just thought of - that it took me a while to actually figure out - is:
Don't be afraid to get killed doing a quest.
For instance - I'm level 11 right now, and about to do Dark Storms. It's a bit of a pain usually, because there are a lot of mobs around the one you need to kill... I used to try to take them out, respawn, kill some more... etc.
I've now just gotten used to going right after him - killing him and ignoring everyone else, grabbing what I need off his body, and just letting myself die.
So don't be afraid to get killed doing a quest. Sometimes it saves travel time, too ;)

Priests dont have the same armor as a warr...
Might sound daft but its very easy to forget when you have been playing a warrior for a year and a half and start leveling a priest for a change.

Remember that Druids -CANT- rez more than one person every 30 min. Priests palis and shamen can all rez as much as they want. (But the druids can rez in combat)
If your an enchanter DONT roll "need" on stuff just to disenchant it. Everyone needs it (For gold or their own enchanting), not just you. :p
If you group up, bring a tank and a Healer.
Wait for your healers mana. Thats probibly what wipes most groups early on. =]
Thats all i can think of now, all of them are painfully obvious if youve leveled up, but might not be if your new.

Dont trust anyone.
If death is unavoidable run to where you can res safely. Standing and fighting in the middle of a spawn zone will leave you with a difficult res problem.
Be polite, thank those that deserve it, ignore those that don't.
Remember that other players only know you for the way you act online. You may be a saint in RL but if you are an A-hole online you will not make it onto many friends lists.

If you pass a player and they cast a buff on you then do your best to cast one on them.
Don't be afraid to use those scrolls and elixirs, if they drop. If you save them up then find a good spot of humanoid mobs to grind on, cast them all on yourself and grind away.
Don't run there if you can fly there.

Gonna change this slightly:
Remember which class you are playing if you switch between alts alot, its easy to forget what each one is and isnt capable off.

never log off in the wilderness unless you have a fast PC. Chances are when you log on any nearby mobs will have 10 secs of free hits on you as your FPS tries desparatly to rise above 2.00

IF your a nice person, and can part with them pass old bags to newer players a little kindness may help them out and may show them the nice way to do things.

Don't buy ore / herbs / whatever you need for your profession on the Auction House. You'll go poor for a while, and go bored from the grinding..
Then take the long break I'm on now :(

It doesn't suck to have to go back and do it.
I can level up to 70 in about 12-13 days. I go back and get all my professions up easily, probably 1-2 days. The only profession I get is First Aid.
It's so much quicker if you go back, and it saves you gold along the way so you can get mounts at the proper time.

To furthur on from this, when levelling any profession you will usually make 10 of one object IE) 10xNightscape boots. Have a look before you AH them all and gift at least 1 to a lower level player.
If your nice, ppl will be nice to you.

True - I give away jewelry all the time on my Mage - AH price isn't worth it and I hate to vendor it all away. If a player helps my Mage they usually get a nice ty gift from me :-)
I'll add to OP - don't feel like you need to join a guild just because they invite you, the higher level you go w/uot one the more offers you'll get too. Try to hook up w/RL friends or take time finding a guild you'll be happy with.
On that note please don't spam guild invites, just because you see a level 40+ player w/out one :-(

This is sort of a lengthly list, and probably some or most of these I know some of you are familiar with.
(PvP Tip): During PvP, fight fire with fire. If your enemy is jumping around (rogues T.T), jump around as well. If your enemy is running around, run around too.
(Misc. Tip): In Outland, pay attention to your minimap so you don't fall off. I
(learned this one the hard way.
(PvE/PvP Tip): If you see someone about to die from a mob, help them. Buff them, heal them, kill the monster, anything. If you are on a PvP server, chances are, if you help out a Horde, he'll leave you alone if you're not looking for trouble.
(PvE/PvP Tip): It is noobish to attack opposing members of the opposite factions when they are in combat with something else. If you want to be sporting, let the opposing faction member kill his/her mob first, let him/her heal, and then attack them.
(PvE Tip): If you are in an area with both aggressive or non-aggressive monsters (ex: Terokkar Forest), watch the AoE. You might accidentally hit a non-aggresive monster(ex: If you are fighting a Warp Stalker, be careful with your AoE not to hit a Teromoth)
(Instance Tip): Be sure to slow or immobilize mobs in instances to make sure they don't run and pull another mob.
(PvP/PvE Tip): If you are trying to kill a player, and they run from you and have almost an impossible head start to catch up on, just let them go. They might run into a mob and die anyway
(Instance Tip): Ask to make sure everyone especially your healer is ready before proceeding to kill the next mob in an instance.
(Instance Tip): At any opportunity possible, let your tank attack first and attack the mob for a few seconds to gain sufficient aggro before the casters attack.
(Money-making tip): If you sell something at the auction house, compare what your selling to other prices of the same or similar item, and put that item up for slightly lower than what you were comparing to(ex: Deep Peridot 1g 50s, put your Deep Peridot up for only 1g). Also, be careful not to go too downhill with your discounts(ex: Thorium Bar 20g, Thorium Bar, 15g, Thorium Bar, 10g, Your Thorium Bar, 5g). If anything like this should happen, go with the "in-between" price of what's already up, because someone will buy the cheapest auction up, and other people will eventually have to buy your item(Thorium Bar, 5g(someone bought it), Your Thorium Bar 10g(new lowest price). Remember, everyone will buy the cheapest of something they can find. I'm sorry, this all might seem confusing but I can't explain this any easier.
(Armor/Weapon Tip): If you're looking for new gear, make sure you need and have a use for the bonuses it offers. (ex: You're a warrior, you see a chest plate with +30 Stamina, +29 Intellect, and +31 Agility, but think this: "Do I need that intellect?")
(Gathering Tip): If you are mining, search around mountains and high places in Azeroth, and around the edges and high places in Outland.
(General Tip): If a newbie asks you to run them through an instance, help them with a quest, or for some money, be nice and give them some. Otherwise, tell them you're sorry that you can't help them atm. You will get something back in return at another point in the future.
(Instance Tip): If you are looking for a certain item in an instance, make sure everyone knows what you are looking for. If you and another person is looking for the same item, it is only fair to roll between it, otherwise if they've run that instance more than you have looking for that item, let them have it. Chances are, that you will get that item as a reward for being selfless toward other players.
Well, that's all I've got. Don't flame me if you already know most or all of what I said.
hehe, I like your post DaWok, but 1 I do disagree with... if your on a PvP server, no need to feel remorse for killing someone while they are fighting :D
I know its not all that sporting, but im sure you have been ganked yourself in the past, and probably will again in the future, may as well make the most of the free Honorable Kill :P

to avoid lots of abuse and general ill-feeling, don't beg for money. in the time it takes to stand in SW and ask everyone around you for money, you could be out killing humanoids and getting cash. begging is a sure-fire way to make sure lots of people say unkind things to you.
and if you're in a guild, don't beg strangers for anything - money, runs through deadmines/stocks, whatever. it makes your guild look like crap. if your guild won't help you, find another one. you're not locked into one guild for the rest of your virtual life.
also, if you're working on a quest that requires killing a certain type of mob, or a named, and you see another player possibly doing the same thing, don't be afraid to ask them to group up with you. you both get done quicker and don't have to race each other to tag the next mob. cuts down on a lot of frustration.

Good thread. Here are a few that jumped into my head. They are pretty obvious but I still see it happen all the time:
Pay attention to your (and your pets if you have one) aggro radius. (I cannot stress this enough!!)
Your Mage/Priest/Pali/Lock shouting OOM is not the universal symbol to aggro 10 more mobs.
Let the tank grab aggro before you start nuking.
If you need a heal don't run away from your healer, run towards them or, better yet, just stand still. Distence and breaking line of sight will prevent you from being healed.
If you have to go AFK in an instance (or with any group) please let everyone know before we engage the next big group.
When you group with someone for a specific quest. Don't hearth out as soon as you finish if the rest of the rest of the group still needs help.
You can right click on the chat window tab, unlock it and move it it around. (I just figured this out after over a year of playing, DOH!!!)
Make sure you have enough shot/arrows before entering a BG or instance. I saw a hunter running around AB begging for shot because they forgot.
If you are building exp with a new weapon skill, don't do it while in a group of people depending on you being at the top of your form.
If you see someone fighting mobs around a node/herb you want to mine/pick please ask before running in and ninja'ing it.

dawok: i like most of your post also. but i don't agree with giving noobs money. I am of the opinion that these gold selling turds can possibly use this as a means of income. i'm just saying that my guild has priority on my help and my gold. i'm not gonna get some lvl 5 1g when i know someone in my guild and myself needs it. even though i'm lvl 60 doesn't mean that 1g isn't as important to me as it was the lvl 5. im still saving for that epic mount ya know lol.
and on the auction house. be careful not to sell items for less than you could have vendored them. like in your example about the jewel, wouldn't that sell for 1g to a vendor? so listing it on ah for 1g would be a mistake cuz you would lose money after the ah cut.

Not sure if that was sarcasm or not so I'll reply as taking it seriuosly:
I disagree - when fighting a hunter ignore the pet and rush the hunter, kill the hunter and the pet goes away. I used to run in fear of hunters (even though I played one to LvL 28) now I rush them and usually win, unless they are several LvL's above me. I am only LvL 46 so I'm not fighting 70's (unless they are ganking me ... lol ) but at my level I do not fear hunters, now Mages and Warlocks, well I still stink agianst them in PvP ....

I agree.. Hunters dont scare me at all... As long as they cant get distance on you, you will win 100% of the time.
-it is ok to roll Need on BoE Epic items, onless otherwise aggreed upon.
-be prepared for much griefing if you win an Orb Of Deception on a fair roll.

Heres a tip for the up and coming player, avoid buying off the AH until you are finished leveling. The money you spend on their for gear and whatnot is largely wasted, and adds up, even the small amounts.
Instead, every 10 levels at the 8s and 9s, run AB and Warsong for gear, for horde, you can cash in the marks in north barrens for the warsong gear, and for the ab gear, you can cash that in at the vendor in hammerfall. For certain classes, you can even get better gear than you could buy off the AH or find in instances, and all it takes is time. And, at 40 and 50, those marks can get you some bad mamba epic bracers, and everyone loves the epics.
This will not only get you some nice gear as you level for basically nothing, but it will also teach you how to pvp well with your character.
Also, when leveling your character, unless you plan on leveling solely using instances, spec your character so he does the most damage, or has less downtime than before. For example, rogues would spec combat, druids would spec feral, pallys ret, priests shadow, hunters beastmastery, warriors arms etc etc. Try to also save the respecs til at least 40 or 50 minimum, the costs of respecs start shooting up the more you respec, and for the most part, later on when you have a bunch of points is when you will get more value out of a respec than when you only have like 10-20 points in it. Throw this out the window if you dont plan on soloing til 70, this does not apply to you, but if you do, it will speed things up, and save you gold at the same time.

Tip: Roll a Warlock =)
Fun when a +3 lvl hunter jumps you..and you STILL win. Than he resses when your fighting a mob and tries to kill you and STILL dies as you eat his corpse. Than he resses/regens and tries to mount...seduce him, nuke/dot-dot-dot and chase him on foot as he rides away...and dies from your dots. He came to help his 39 druid friend whom tried to gank me 3 times while fighting a mob and he lost all 3 as well. Poor guys, they both jumped me and i still killed the hunter =P
