I'm mostly pve. However the very few times I ended up killing an alliance member I noticed the game mentioned private on my screen. So I was hoping someone could please explain to me what this means? Is this the other person's rank? Or mine? and if so how does one check it in our options. Final question: is there a list or ranks? and what one has to do to be promoted?

it relates to the old pvp ranks, you used to have to gain ranks to get access to the armour and weapons.

i.e champion, Warlord etc.

the rank system has been removed however the people who had a rank with the old system still retain the rank they had at there highest.

dont think there is anyway to get the ranks now if you didnt compete in the old system.

think you may still be able to get the conqurer rank from being exalted with the 3 old battlegrounds when they add that rank in the next patch, though not sure if you still get rep like you used to as my shaman was exatled with all long time ago and not done any pvp for a while on my warrior as im getting to 70.

You still get rep.
However, I do not believe these ranks will display when you're killed as they've really got nothing with honor to do, and the only reason the old ranks were shown was to give you some idea of how much honor u'd be likely to pick up.
You'll still be able to show the title next to your name, though.

ah ok though they had changed it to show the highest rank, i.e the one you now have over your head.

wasnt trying to infer that the conquerer rank will, show more pointing out that there is still a rank you will be able to achive

They are about to add a ranking if you get exalted with warsong, ab, and av. Can't remember offhand what that ranking is, but I'd bet that they will soon have more special rankings for us to work towards.
