Hi. First things first. I'm an ex Guild Wars player that got sick of all the nerfs Anet were dishing out, so I thought I'd finally try WoW. Upto now it's been a revelation. There's so much to do it's confusing at times but the one thing that is puzzling me the most are instances.

Will I get a mission to take me to an instance mission or do I just jump into them whenever I find one? Can I do them on my own or do I need a group?

Also, even though I can't see it yet, is there an underlying story in the game or is it more like a life simulator for a warrior/hunter ... etc with missions to complete? What I mean is, is it aiming somewhere?

I know these may seem daft questions but I'm used to the way GW plays and need help converting to WoW.

Cheers.

Hi there, welcom to WoW :)

1. You will get some quests that take you to instances, and most instances have at least 1 or 2 quest you can complete while in the instance, but it is not always required. Some of the high level instances, require you to complete a long chain of quest in order to gain access, but not all of them (mainly the 10+ man raids). For the instances not requiring a key or long chain of quest known as attunement, you can just walk in. Most instances until you get to the high levels are meant for a 5 person group. This will consist of tank to take the brunt of the damage, a healer to heal, and 3 other dps / crowd control classes. When you get to a high enough level you can solo the lower level instances for fun, but keep in mind, the monsters in the instances are elites, that is to say even if they have the same level as you, in reality they will be like fighting a monster 5 levels higher, so you will want a group most of the time :)

There is a very rich lore behind warcraft (one that i personally love). I would recomend going to wikepedia to read up on. Your character that you create basically finds itself at a certain point in the history of wow and where it will go from there is yet to be determined. There is also lore for each class (warrior/hunter, ect.) There is no end to the game, however, the burning crusade expansion brings players to encounters with characters critical to the warcraft lore. The quests you complete with your character will shape your toon, and you build reputation throughout the game with factions of your choosing (in some cases) which grants you certain privliges with that group, such as ablility to buy rare items.

I hope that helps :)

I was the same as you Thorgill - I played GW for 2 years, then when they changed it so the mobs started chasing me all over the map in Nightfall I decided to try WoW, and havent really played GW since.

I gather they have changed this back now, but I have no immediate reason to go back to GW, especially with the SR nerf, and WoW is so much better once you get into it.

Thanks everyone. Great answer.

There is FAR more to this game than GW and while it is daunting, it's also exciting to be able to do so much. One more question has just popped into mind about instances if you don't mind and it concerns getting a group. Do I need to get the group before going in, or is there a kind of waiting area in there for people to join together?

Sorry to be a pain. I'm off to the WoW Wiki to do some swatting up.

Cheers again.

Hello again...
press the "i" butten and click looking for group...then selecet the dungeon you are looking for and it will match you to a group...if you have a group and need more people simply click "looking for more" butten and there will be a list of others that are looking for the same dungeon as you...good luck man and hope this helps
Cheers

Welcome!

As Gumguy states above, there is a Looking for Group tool that you can use to find other people interested in the same instance as you are.

Also, once you make friends and/or join a guild, you will find you will have contacts you can ask to join you on a run through an instance.

There are also chat channels that people use to find other people for groups.

There's little point in waiting out by the instance itself, most if not all the people who go there will be organized in groups already. You may possibly find a group still looking for another, but it's unlikely.

Instances require groups of 5 if you're of the appropriate level, less as you move beyond the level range. So it's usually best to have your group all together first before you head out to the instance.
