Hi,

i currently have a level 14 warlock, and i'm figuring out that i can barely take down a level 15 boar without having a minion at my side. I also have a level 16 mage but got bored always casting the same spells all the time.

So my question is, is it just for now or even when i get to a high level will i be too dependent on my minions?

That's the strength of the class. The partnership of the warlock and minion. Learning to use the correct demon for the situation is what makes a warlock better.

It's pretty much an eternal MMO truth, that classes who got permanent pets are completely dependant on them, and classes with less permanent pets (Summoned just for a single fight like ice mages, or tame a new every time you logon like D-2 necromancers) rely less heavily on them.

The only time where your minion will only matter little is in the big raid instances, and even then you'll be expected to keep an inulnerable imp at your sides at all times to boost the stamina of your party.

What you should do is learn how to play your minion the best. Once you master the art of controlling 2 units you'll be far stronger than any single enemy you might face, unless that enemy is designed with the sole purpose of destroying you (meaning that if you meet a fury warrior: Run).
And how? First off set your pet on Passive (ctrl+0 by default, I believe) and get used to manually telling it what to do (ctrl+1 = attack, ctrl+2 = follow you, ctrl+3 = stay which is useful with a pet that can Charge). When a random demon becomes just as smart as a player, people start dying. Quicly.

It is through the lifetime of the Warlock. The manipulation and management of that minion is probably the most distinguishing feature of the class. So, if that's not your thing you might want to reconsider playing a Warlock.

At my level the pet-warlock relation breaks down a good bit (32 atm), and you find that some warlocks are able to step further out of the shell of demon dependency to DPS better.

Currently, i use the succubus, both for cosmetics (admit it-- if you had the choice you would too) and for the added DPS. I mainly drain tank while leveling, which provides my pet with an open back after about 5 seconds of combat -- the pet takes a good 100-200 damage and I tank the rest, pet gets an open back to DPS against and I get more DOT's basically, from my Succy.

At level 40, i will likely use an invis'd imp (aside from the occasional flame shield) to keep my mana at a constant high thanks to dark pact.

Of course, thats how it is with affliction anyway.

EDIT: And to take down a mob without a demon just use fear-spam. At that level i had to do it too. Anymore, i can just life tap - siphon life - drain life drain life drain life drain life drain sould -> dead mob and a soulshard.

That is certainly an arguable point. While the Succubus is fabulous for DPS, the right minion selection for the right fight is invaluable. Voidwalker if you are taking on a mass of mobs, because - if you are taking the hits your spellcasting is delayed and your DPS will suffer. Or - the Felhunter for it's devouring and silencing abilities. So maybe not dependant on them as much, but running around without them would be gimping yourself a bit, wouldn't it?

It would. But its the same as a rogue with adrenaline rush -- he doesnt need it but it's there when it counts.

at lower levels, we are heavily reliant on pets to keep us alive, but then again, u must realise that warlocks are one of the weaker classes until lv 30, where we become about as good as everyone else, and at 40s we begin to do well in bgs and instances and such.

from lv 40 onwards, i have been using imp on passive, doing nothing except using him as a mana battery, dark pacting when i needed mana, so he isnt doing any damage, and i could go without him easily...
higher lv locks often use a Demonic Sacrifice build, sacrificing their pet for good health/mana regen, or for dmg bonuses... these are common in raid builds, and some grinding builds also

so yes. locks are reliant on pets at low lvs, but as we progress, we become better without them (cept for demo locks, but they're built for having an awesome pet)... still, we're much less dependent on pets than hunters are

As for the mage it does get a little different as you level up higher, with new spells. But for the most part you will get bored "casting the same spells"

Every class though has the "same spell" routine depending on your class.

The class that most varies in my opinion is the rogue. If you wanted to try one of those.
