I'm thinking of getting the game, read up a bit on wikipedia, but what is the ultimate goal of the game, if there is one? Or do you just hack and slash your way up the ladder until you're a level 500 player at the age of 90 and then you die because you're too busy playing the game to remember to take your medicine? Just asking is all.:undecided:

There's a level cap of 70, which will take about 2 weeks of playing without eating or sleeping to reach. The greatest armor sets are known as "Tier 5" and shouldn't take more than a few years to gather, after you hit lvl 70, and then there's PvP...

Not to forget that Blizzard keeps on adding new stuff whenever there's 2 or 3 players per server who reached the best gear available.

Um.... enjoy playing the game?

That tends to be my ultimate goal.

There is no "last boss" if that's what you're looking for. You might consider Illidan like that but the game will eventually expand and move beyond him.

Its not about end games, its about building your character, interacting with others, taking part in raids, dungeons or just soloing, trading in the auction house, getting mounts to ride, learning trades and professions.

You can have many characters, I think the limit is 10, but enough to have one of each class anyway so you can vary your play.

Remember that wow is very interactive (if you want it to be).

Get it and try it. You wont be disappointed.

Also meant to say that I have been playing quite a while but my main is only at level 50, however I can ride a ram, cat and a horse as I spent quite a bit of time gaining exalted status with most factions just as a bonus.

If your refering to hack/slash as grinding then no, this game is much different. It offers you a questing system to get to level 70 which is the leveling cap.

The game has 2 different routes after 70. That's PvP and PvE, You can make your choice then. Or you can do both too..

The game is quite addicting.. so you may just be here until your 90.. forgetting to take your medicine is up to you =)

Like Number 5 said, the ultimate goal in World of Warcraft is to enjoy yourself. Try a 10 day trial, that will give you an idea if you will like it or not. And if you still like it after those 10 days, buy the game as that gives you a free month to play. Then, if you're still loving it you can move onto game cards / credit card subscription.

You can have upto 50 characters on 1 acct. 10 on a server, up to 5 servers. Might wanna try one on pve, one on pvp and maybe a rp server too.

Id at least play a toon till lvl 10 before you decide if you like that class. You can get to lvl 10 in a day rather easily.

Id say, if there is an ultimate goal it would be simply building your character. You will have 5 professions to work up, choices on talents, run an economy, make friends etc.

Ultimate goal = L33t epix

All the other stuff, having fun, immersment in the community, helpful goal driven guild, are the ladder to the Epic gear.

Nope, it's a great big sandbox. For some people, the goal is to kill ever bigger monsters until they are downing big ugly raid bosses. Some like to fight other human players in PvP battlegrounds. Some people just like to explore, go fishing and generally have a relaxed time of it.

If you're someone who does like a challenge, there's plenty of tough and nasty stuff- otherwise there are all sorts of strange and quirky things to do, see, collect and obsess over. I suspect the main appeal is that there's always something diverting to do. If you give the trial a go, you'll see just how cunningly designed it is.. :)

I didn't realize you had beaten the game as soon as you created your first toon!

Sweet!

the game is going to last that long?

Definitely, but more like within a few hours...You can get to level 20 in less than 15 hours.

You do, I concede most pitifully. I have never been able to max out either of those two on any of my toons, just too mind-numbingly dull :)

I must agree....cooking is actually easyier...just gather and hit create all...unfourtantly fishing is more boring then watching my hair grow.....

I agree... Fishing is by far the most mind numbing profession... I can never level it. The changes they are making to it will help a lot. But I still have a feeling that it is going to boring as crap.

There is a really fun way to level fishing.

Fish in an opposing faction's city!

No, there is no "ultimate goal" in the game. There is no core narrative to follow with a final difinitive boss to beat and then the game is over. Think of it as a multiplayer game like Battlefield, or Counter Strike which people play for years on end with no ultimate goal either. The point of the game is to play, have fun with other people, build a character mastering all of its techniques, collecting new and better gear/items, or participating in the PvP system where you get to kill other players.

The whole idea is that there is no 'ending' point, and thus you will be paying Blizzard FOREVER.

You play as long as it is fun.

The game is designed around a curve, which gets pretty exponential once you hit 'end-game'

For example, a simple quest taking 20 minutes will net you some good 'rare' gloves. Then to get some just-better-than-good 'epic' crafted gloves involves several weeks of a couple of hours a day grinding materials, killing bosses in heroic dungeons etc. The epic gloves may be only a few points better than the quest... but it's like this with most items.

You may want an epic Tier 4 helm that drops from prince malchazaar in Karazhan... that will take you weeks of attunement, raiding 3-4 nights a week (non hard core) and if you are the right class for that boss fight, you may get your helm after 2 months if you are unlucky on the rolls / dkp.

But that tier 4 helm isnt much better again than a quest or normal dungeon blue...

So if you want to see what people call end-game the investment in effort goes way up. If you are happy questing and instancing then it's pretty much play it how you want it.

Couple of weeks? More like a few evenings, each involving two hours of mindless tedious grinding, for most of the current TBC craftable epics, assuming you're actually farming the right things. Yes, this is dull, but often this yields results pretty fast.

Nethers can be a pain, but they are a 100% drop from heroic endbosses, so just pick something easy like underbog, and you can do a couple of clears in an evening without a problem, assuming a decent group.

I think you have a somewhat skewed view of the effort involved, guessing you haven't had a call to upgrade to any of the nice epic craftables yet. Hopefully when you do, more crafters will be able to get their nethers easily (as people gear up over time), so prices will be forced down- that's the pricey bit :)

Most of you seem a bit confused. The ultimate goal of the game is to become so immersed that you spend every waking minute toward progression.

Fun is ancillary.

As an illustration some guy wanted to 'beat the game'. Because it was too late to be the first one with all the top gear (at the time) he was taking the pvp route. If he was No.1 (High Warlord) he'd have won it. Several months and a LOT of cash later (to pay someone to do Battlegrounds for him bcause he STILL needs to sleep/eat) he makes it and is a physical wreck and tired of WoW. He cancels.

Play for fun. Collect all possible mini-pets in the game. Make a gazillion gold at the Auction House. Do some PvP and try and do it well. But for gods sake have fun doing it !

As other people I'm sure have said there is no offical end point like in conventional games. My 'ultimate goal' in WoW would be to be in the best guild in the world, to have the best gear of my class, be the best at PvP and be able to afford any item I wanted.

I have knots, on my knots, between my shoulders doing just that! :nerd:

There is a final boss in Wow. It's yourself.

After realising this, my first thought was: "I need better gear..."
