ok, i returned to WoW today, first time since December. I figured the Expansion had an impact, and i was shocked when i noticed mstormwind and ironforge nearly empty, and less in lower lvl zones (I'm only LV30).
Is everyone else new content areas/high lvl, or can i blame daytime hours for this?

I would blame daytime hours, a lot of people still use the major city's for the AH so they should'nt be that dead, as for the other zones, yep they will be more dead then before as all the 60's that used to wonder around are now all concentrated into outland as lvl 70's .

If they moved the auction houses and class trainers to shat i anticipate that nearly every zone in the old world would be empty.
The new content is much more appealing and the gold/drops there is so much better that few if any travel back to the old world unless absolutely necessary or to go to stv to gank.

Going back to the old world is so annoying when you can't fly where you want to go
On the servers I'm on, the lower level characters are just a little less common, but characters lvl 58 or higher are almost never seen outside the outlands. I suspect the reason that the lower level characters are less common is because the urge to create alts has been diverted by content that most people haven't run repeatedly until they have it memorized.

Both...IMO, this is the natural evolution...At some point, there will be only a trickle of newcomers, and the lower zones will merely be for show.

Depends on your server.
But pretty much what everyone here said - most people are in OL now and Azeroth is just some new ppl and other's alts.

When people say the "old world" are they talking about the game without the expansion? I haven't downloaded the expansion yet but I own it. Are the drops actually better in the expansion?

Old world = Azeroth...
The drops in outlands (58+) are fantastic as compared to Azeroth zones.

logged on Antonidas server around 3 am to do some farming and ran "who" looking for the least populated areas:
Felwood 9
Azshara 11
Tanaris 22
Winter Spring 16
Hellfire Peninsula 58
this was on Central Time....

Gotcha! :) Thanks. So there's no enjoying these new drops until (1) I download the expansion and (2) reach lvl 58. :) At lvl 33 I have 25 levels to go for that, and while I used to be able to gain 1 lvl every day (and multiple levels per day in the very beginning) that is quickly slowing down to 1 lvl every two days. At this rate it'll be months before I hit 58. Yowza!

How do you do that? The "who" to find the least populated areas...

Icon to the right of your "quests" icon - social, I believe - chat bubble with an exclamation point in it. Opens up a window, click on the "who" tab (friends/quild/who) and then enter the zone you want to check and click "refresh" and it will show you who is in that zone.
Unless of course I've been completely wrong all this time....

Well, actually, you can enjoy them if you buy them in AH...and are the appropriate level.
You do not need to own TBC to equip an item from outlands.
To be sure, it will be a bit before you can equip anything that drops in outlands.
It took me a week or so (up to two hours a day...) from 57-58, and two hours in outlands to do 58-59. Go figure. Three more hours, and I was 60.

I believe you can also just type in the chat window
/who <location>
You can also look for level, class, race I would imagine, guild, and name or fragment of a name.
Also, keep in mind that this also gives you who's flying though the area at the time of your area search, so the numbers might be higher than they actually are.

may i also ask what became of Bloodsong and other BGs in Azeroth? In storm wind the 3 NPCs in the castle seem to left. (though i'm certain PvP at that level is dead)

Err, do you mean warsong gulch? :)
Anyway, they still run, there's a new lv 70 one called Eye of the Storm too. There are battlemasters for all of them in the old world cities, and also in Shattrath in Outland too. There are also arena battlemasters in the wold world.
Lots of people still PvP, though there are fewer in the battlegrounds than there were just before TBC. At that time, people had "used up" most of the PvE content, and were PvPing for fun and upgrades. However, the new content isn't totally worn-out yet in Outland, so there's plenty to do. Heck, the incoming patch brings a new raid instance- new content is currently being added faster than the average player can consume it.

They've been moved to the room behind the king, about 50 yards or so...
