Question real quick today I was questing with a friend in the Stoneleton Mountains (sp?). When we were finished we harthed to crossroads to turn in some quests. When we arrived at Crossroads it was being attacked by a high level (since he was easily dispatching the guards I would say at least 60). Anyway, I was just explaining to my friend who is new to the game that we were safe from this invader because we were in our newbie zone when the invader ganked me. Obviously I was very surprised and checkd my pvp setting but it was clearly disabled. I also checked my pet but he was on passive so he should not have instigated a fight. After the invader took me out he then took out my friend. Was the ally able to take us out because we had just come from a contested zone and thus the pvp flag was still on cooldown? If not how did he do it? Not that it matters but the ally was a rogue.

You mist have turned your PvP flag on. Like, if you attacked one of the Alliance people, or you helped/buffed/healed a Hordie, or typed /pvp.

Assuming you are on a PvP realm, I would say "yes" because you just came from a contested zone, you would still be flagged for a few minutes.

That works too, and I'm also assuming he's on a PvP zone. because otherwise the question is just umm.... what's the word? Ahh, yes. Silly.

Crossroad (and Barrens) is not newbie zone..isn't it contested?
Isn't only the Valley of Trials (and maybe Durotar) safe?

No, Barrens is considered "friendly" territory. Contested starts at Thousand Needles. I suspect the cooldown on flying in from a Contested Territory was what got them.

Valley of the trials is the noob area for troll's/orc's and even this isn't safe if you have your pvp flag on, there are regularly lvl 40+ alliance chars camped there waiting to gank noobs

I would think this is on a PvP server, you hearthed from a contested zone and thus, still flagged. There is a cooldown before you are not flagged. BTW, as soon as you get on a FP, you will no longer be flagged.

Newbie hunter pets with generic names can also be used to bait low levels in "friendly territory" into flagging pvp unknowingly.

I'm with you on this det...and I think it is only the valley.

And it isn't clear which type of server you are on...you talking of setting your flag, but also talk as it being in Stonetalon makes you automatically flagged. <shrugs>

Sorry, I am on a pvp server. And I guess technically speaking Crossroads is not a newbie zone I just consider it one since no non-concentual pvp is supposed to take place.

Aresxx has it right.
det and DrOsmius are mistaken.

The Barrens is Horde territory, not contested.
Alliance cannot attack Horde there unless their PVP flag is set, even if they are on a PVP server, which they must be. Flying in would have unflagged them, whereas hearthing would not.

Barrens is owned by horde...and safe to unflagged horde players.

When I first started my troll character, this is where I started and I did often see Alliance guys camped out killing noobs. I didn't realize at the time that you had to have PvP enabled for this to happen, so I stayed clear of them.

Now, though, that I'm Alliance... I do like to go there from time to time just to teach the complete noobs that they should toggle their PvP OFF while they're low levels. And since I can't communicate with them, the only way to teach them is to kill them in 1 shot. lol That is, until the level 70 guy shows up. He's a real party pooper, but he loves to 1-shot me in return. :D

The Barrens is Horde territory. Stone Talon Mountains however is contested territory. Hearthing into safe territory doesn't remove your pvp flag. Your pvp flag is turned off only by either; taking a flight path, or waiting five minutes and not pvping in those five minutes, pvping resets the flag.

I can safely state this as fact as I used to play on a pvp server exclusively. Next time take a flight path back to remove it. ;)

Basically the safe zones work as follows; 1-10 and 10-20 level zones are faction controlled and safe, anything 20+ is contested and therefore you are flagged for pvp. And of course you are flagged in the opposite factions safe zones, ie alliance are flagged in Durotar.

I constantly wonder why Redridge is a contested zone seeing as there are level 11-20 Quests there. Most zones in the game at that level are non-pvp unless you flag. I got ganked repeatedly in Lakeshire last night (I have a level 18 mage...can you say one shot? LOL) doing quests that are yellow and green to me. Oh well, I'm on a PvP server...where PvP occurs. I'm just curious as to why that area is contested and others of the same level range are not.

Horde Territory zones are: Durotar, Mulgore, Barrens, Tirisfal Glades, Silverpine Forest, Eversong Woods, and Ghostlands.

Barrens is Horde. Ran a Crossroads raid a couple weeks ago and there must have been 50 unflagged noobie Hordies standing around in the safety of their non-flaggedness watching the massacre.
