Just a quickie (so to speak)
I know its been asked before but I thought I would ask again in case anything has changed.
I am close to 56 now, thinking about the outlands. How do I get there? Is there anything I need to do first that will stop me getting there? What level should I go at?
No rush to get there at my casual speed but I thought I better ask the questions in readiness.
Cheers

At level 58 you can enter the portal in Blasted Lands. That's the level where you can start questing in Outlands. Some in my guild already got summoned there at level 56 and grinded two levels. But I recommend you stay in Azeroth until level 58. The first level or two are a bit tough until you are geared up a bit. See if you can find somebody, perhaps in your guild, that you can team up with for those levels.

You can go through the dark portal at level 58, Blasted Lands, make sure you get the quest to fly to your first town and not run past all the Elites or they will eat you alive.

Just need level 58 - the Portal is in Blasted Lands (grab quest on Azeroth side on your way in) - Bring a willingness to kill Spiked Hell Boars  - and a bit of food and water IMO (I thought it was expensive when I first got there - was something like 50s a stack o' 5 at first).

Just seconding the bit about waiting until 58 rather than grinding levels until you get there.
To prepare yourself though, I definitely suggest keeping an eye out for affordable Outland greens in your level. They are SUCH and upgrade, and while quests will for the most part take care of you (odd change huh?) - I personally found it easier to gear up a bit before hand.

My advice would be to take a week off from that toon so that you have rested XP all the way to level 58.

Dont forget the Bitter Brew in Nethergrade keep. You will need it for one of the first quests you do...Might save a trip back to Azeroth for ya.
Thanks

I got a portal via mage to Shatt. (lvl 57 pally)Set my HS to shatt and use the free portals to get back to IF,SW, Darnassus, etc. I had to make the mad dash to Honor Hold for some training since my smithing has been maxed out since lvl 55. So as you can guess I did get attacked by a few odd looking beasts....that netted 1000+ exp pts per kill for me. I stayed there and carefully grinded for a bit, (mostly 61,62) got a handful of Fel Iron and some motes. I too plan in dinging 58 this weekend and getting some good gear finally. See ya there.

(do) not run past all the Elites or they will eat you alive.
Unless they're currently actively fighting with NPC's. Then, join in the fight and you might get wicked xp from when they fall.
