View Full Version : Starcraft2: Death of WoW?

With the release of Starcraft 2 coming in the future, do you think WoW will take a big hit in terms of people leaving to go play starcraft?

How do you think the WoW community is going to handle the new starcraft game.

I personally have several guildmates that plan on playing lots of starcraft which is going to hurt our raid progression. I think that guilds all over WoW are going to suffer and will lack the amount of members neccessary to progress far into raiding.

I doubt it. People can pause Starcraft 2 whenever they want to. You may see a lot of people that aren't around during non-important times (i.e. raid), but my guess is they will be logging in right before a raid begins.

My guildmates that plan on playing lots of starcraft won't even bother with the single player part. They will most likely jump right into multiplayer play and start making guilds and setting up team games.

I can definetly see it affecting WoW.

RTS addictions last about a month, perhaps two typically. While there are many people still on Starcraft, Warcraft 2 is basically dead as a played online game. As an interesting point, many people still play Warcraft 3 today, even though WoW is obviously more successful, hundreds of thousands hit Warcraft 3 every day to play.

I'd say there would be a drop of about 10%, people playing less often on WoW, raids might be harder to maintain due to the rivalling attention grabbers. However, WoW is more long term, and most will come back once they've played around, won a couple of dozen games and beaten the campaign. WoW as I see it won't suddenly see a huge dip in subscribers because of Starcraft II. Different markets really, with some overlap of course, but some WoW players just won't be moved at all by it. And many people will come back because Starcraft is a non-progressive static game.

The RTS guild system can't be compared to WoW's, it's nowhere near as neccessary or as useful, very few exist and there's much less of a connection usually, due to the limited size and scale of the games. I see this as something temporary, and in the long term probably nothing more than a blip. Not even half a million cancellations.

I know I'll be mainly playing it campaign mode. I can't wait to see how the advance the storyline. I'm sure I'll probably pay a tad less but I don't see it affect my wow time by that much. I'll probably just farm less or something. Maybe run less heroics. But I'll remain committed to my guild's raid schedule.

I'm supposed to be excited about this . . . . :ponder:

Ehh this will affect those that enjoy RTS's - which a whole mass of us don't really care to much for.

mmorpg <-> RTS.

2 entirely different games.

why would one threaten the other ?

Different targetted audience.

SC2 will have the player base in Korea, I am willing to bet more than WoW. And if SC1 is any indication, SC2 will out last WoW in Korea.

I never see any good SC2 American players vs. Koreans. I doubt SC2 will make any scatch to the NA WoW subscription figures.

When C&C 3 came out I played that for a few weeks, got bored with it and returned to WoW. Even when I was playing I still logged into WoW to grind and whatnot. I'm sure I won't get as bored with SC2 as I did with C&C 3, but it won't really affect my WoW career much at all.

The multiplayer RTS crowd may be big, but probably not even a fraction of WoW's player base. And the hardcore RTS multiplayers who might leave WoW for SC2 multiplayer permanently will hardly be noticed.

Plus, the game doesn't even have a release date yet, it may be a year before it hits shelves, I'd hardly worry about it now.

I don't think alot of you are looking at the bigger picture. There are alot of Blizzard fans playing wow. Yes, even if an RTS did affect a guild for a month that is more than enough time to break it. People spending more time away from wow can easily become detached from it, I hate to admit that but it's true, with something to distract me I could prob give up wow easy....grinding endlessly just isn't that fun.

Not only do we have the old blizzard fans, but I'm going to assume alot of the people that made WoW their first game are gonna go along with what the "cool kids" are doing. Yes, wow won't be empty but I do see some rough times ahead. I'm gonna disagree on mmo's being better than rts, I can't see how it can take 2+ years to progress through a friggin story. SC, sit down, play, 30~ hours later you have replay value in pvp.

Everyday, my guild has people saying they quit wow or "going to take a break" 2 months down the road, they are back. And just because they are not in wow, don't mean they cancelled their subscription.

RTS online plays are like wow arena. Many people can't handle it.

Starcraft (one of the greatest games ever made) is not going to kill WoW. As has been said, they're two different kind of games. Yes, RTS is fun for those who like RTS but those who play WoW now are hooked into an entirely different kind of experience. You "play" Starcraft 2, but then after a few games you'll "go" to the Auction House to see how your stuff is doing, or "do" an instance run in Outland. See the difference? WoW is more immediate and nobody is going to permanently step away from that for an RTS.

As for it killing guilds... if your guild can die because of a month of unstable membership then perhaps you should consider it a form of euthanasia.

Ok, remember that C&C 3 is an awesome game. I played it, loved it, and still yell "Kane Lives!" every morning. But I still play WoW.

Why?

The RTS genre is more on fast paced action. We log in, start trying to rush/turtle/steamroll the other player for an hour and two, and then the adrenaline rush dies down, we get bored, we say GG to each other and then we log off. WoW on the other hand, has more substance. It is about character progression, community, adventuring etc. etc. So that will hold interest longer even after we have steamrolled the opposite faction in a BG after the umpteenth time or finished our 10 arena matches.

What do we do after the RTS match?

Many things, including WoW.

So no, Starcraft 2 will not affect WoW.

WoW has been around for some two years now. In that time many good games have been released and yet the numberof subscriptions has conitnued to increase. The release of one game (when it gets released and this is Blizzard we are talking about here) is not going to effect that.

I can't wait to find out what happens next in the Starcraft universe. But I won't leave WOW. I doubt WOW will suffer a setback in the population.

Well, since Starcraft sucked so much, I bet Starcraft 2 is going to suck too. Sorry if I offended anyone, I just don't like Starcraft :)

Sure, the WoW population might take a dive if it was Diablo 3 that was coming up, but not for SC2

my activity will surely go down with SC2, but I wont quit WoW for it.

Well, since Starcraft sucked so much, I bet Starcraft 2 is going to suck too. Sorry if I offended anyone, I just don't like Starcraft :)

There's a huge difference between judgement of quality and judgement of taste. What you profess here is a judgement of taste. They don't necessarily have to coincide. For example, I can't stand Trent Reznor, but the guy obviously knows very well what he's doing and borders on being a master composer. You not liking Starcraft has nothing to do with it sucking. You not liking Starcraft is an opinion you're entitled to have and one that nobody can possibly argue, and if they do argue it then they'll never be right. But, as for Starcraft sucking... I'm afraid you missed the boat there my friend. Starcraft helped design the RTS genre and remains one of the most thoroughly balanced and well thought out RTS games on the market. Most of everything that followed were the same thing with different appearances and a ream of unnecessary units added.

Yes I'm totally offended by ignorant, unfounded opinions. Play for 30 min and maybe you can think of another word besides "sucks".

And yeah, a month is enough time to kill a guild don't fool yourself. Nobody wants to sit around waiting for others to get back. Don't think SC will kill wow, but it might be a bit rocky for the time frame.

I played SC once years ago and hated it. I've never been able to get in to the RTS mindset.

For me its MMORPG's and FPS's. I like games I can pick up and play without a lot of planning. The release of SC2 won't impact my playtime at all.
