Google are banning essay writing adverts on their site:

Why shouldn't gold selling companies be banned from advertising on Google? Selling gold in WoW is against the ToS, so it seems a simple enough issue to me.

...because Google probably doesn't realize that they're the bane of the WoW world. It's also not against the law outside of WoW.

ToS is only applicable in-game I'm afraid. It's as if you asked why powerlevellers don't go to prison IRL.

Write Google, IMO.

I doubt you'll get your wish, but the only way to know is for you to do the work and ask Google.

Is essay writing for someone else against the law?

I'm really asking - I don't know. Certainly it'd be against the student's ToS with their university, but against the law of the land, I'm guessing not.

My guess is that Google will do what makes them look good. Banning gold selling adds will just lose them revenue and won't make much difference to their image.

No, writing an essay and then selling it is not against the law, in any country.

Good point. For some reason I was thinking it was, but it's not. Like gold ads being against WoW's TOS, the essary writing thing is only really an issue for schools I suppose.

Hard reality is the income they bring.

One of my other sites / forums has a gold ad on one of the pages.

They pay me 75$-100$ a month to have it there. That plus google's checks for google ad-sense pay per clicks, makes good eatin' at the end of the day.

So its easy to look at something and say 'thats crap, take it off' but also remember most forums don't charge their patrons for the hosting, domain and staffing costs they have to deal with.

On my other forum, I dont allow them at all. I have had four companies all offer over 100$ a month for smaller side-bar logos on that site. So far I've kept it clean.

It all depends on what kind of reputation you want a particular site to have.

But wouldnt it be nice to see an extra 100$-400$ a month for ..... doing nothing. Mmmmm =)

Should they ban gold sellers? Yes.

Will they ban gold sellers? I doubt it unless someone campaigns them to do it.

"Should" and "Could" are two very different words.

ohh 7 million or so, which is still a drop in the bucket world wide but theres about 4 million us players thats a little over 1% of the population, there are companies that do much more for a much smaller fan base.

I imagine the money they earn from it is what keeps them from addressing the issue. You can test it yourself by setting up an account on their adserve thingie. I have one and wanted to see what the going rate was for keywords and it was up to 70c a click. That's just outrageous for a skanky text based advert. But they'll pay it because there are players out there willing to pay for the gold and reputable ad agency either won't touch them or their clients have stipulated no ads of that type so google is the only avenue open to them (other than contacting the site directly).

But they are completely aware of the issue and that it's in violation of Blizzard EULA because Rush has had conversations with them about it and it's one of the reasons why we don't carry google ads. That and the fact the difference between the fee they charge advertisers (any advertiser) and pay publishers is so vast it's just taking liberties.
