Know there's a fishing guide out there... the only ohter things I think of is the +20 pole (Big Iron is a drop out in Kalimdor that's sometimes put on the AH, there's also a green +20 pole questable out in Shattrath City in Outland), Fishing Line and Hat from the Booty Bay Fishing Extravaganza too.

Lures? You're good with the +75 fishing baubles, but rare vendor spawns of the Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (?) with +100 are put up for sale in limited quantities periodically. Only lasts 5 minute though.

Best I can do from work.

What zones are you fishing in? I'd start in a beginner zone, like darnassus, SW or darkshore. If you still have trouble in those areas, a lure will help you up your skill faster. HTH:wink:

I'm assuming you are in an area where you CAN fish and your question is about what's happening after the bobber is in the water, right?

Make sure the pointer is on the bobber and making the little gold cogwheel and then wait for the bobber to move. Then right click. Simple. Don't move the pointer off the bobber as you click or you'll miss the fish.

If your new at fishing it takes a little while to actually catch one. A very short time really, and as you catch em and level the ability, you'll start finding that you catch more than you miss till eventually missing a fish is a rare thing. You can also help yourself with lures and other goodies that give a + to fishing skills. I kinda like the nightcrawlers (worms) you can sometimes get from killing undead mobs.

Hope that helps,

I wanted to drop this in here (being a first time post for me) in hopes that this might answer your question, and point you in the right direction. I initially did this write up for the guild that I'm in, so I figured I'd pass it along. If admin feels that it's to lengthy, please feel free to edit.

Most of the members in our guild have heard me rant and rave about fishing, “Who knows how to fish,” or “Anyone been fishing lately?” The typical response is usually, "But Gud old buddy, it takes time and I don't see the real value in it, after all, it doesn't even help me level." True, fishing can’t get you any higher in rank, but alas, I'm out on a soldier’s mission to reveal to you the true secrets behind fishing and its immense value to you, and to the guild in which you serve.

The argument for fishing starts in keeping a few things in mind. 1. How are you going get fast cash? 2. How can you get blue items without having to go and amass the Guild to beat your elite boss at the end of the long four hour 14 part chain quest and, 3. (Which is always my personal favorite), How do I get money for my mount, I’m broke and can’t afford it. The answer to all these questions and much more is through fishing.

Fishing is pretty simple and yet one of the most difficult things to learn, both literally and physically. First things first, let’s get you going on the teaching portion of fishing, and then I’ll get you to the “how to” in a minute. First and foremost, you have to learn the skill in the first place. Usually most starting areas will have a water resource near them. My suggestion is either to walk around it (which will usually end up with you getting murdered my Murlocs) or just simply give a shout out to the guild and they can locate one for you rather quickly. There is another tool that can help you all the same and that’s a website that is linked on the Guild webpage, www.thottbot.com Either way you go, you have to learn the skill from the trainer before you can even cast your first line.

With that said, the next step is probably the most difficult part of fishing, and that’s learning how to do it. First off, you’ll want to hit your escape button and go to settings. Once in settings, you’ll want to look over in the upper left hand portion of your screen. You’ll notice two tabs, one for basic and the next for advanced options. Select the advanced options tab and look at the upper portion of the page. There are several boxes that can be checked there. Play around with what you like, continuing to click one box, close it out and then look at your main screen. What happened? I don’t know what just happened, you just clicked something. But the important thing to remember is that you can always go back by hitting the escape button and returning to the advanced options under the settings screen. The one thing that you’re looking to accomplish by this is that you’ll want to have tabs above your action bars, all nice, empty, and most importantly, free and clear of any icons that might get buried beneath all those other icons that do all kinds of wicked things.

Once you have the tabs out and present (call them hot keys if you will) you simply open your spell book. Yes, I said spell book. It has all your actions listed in there. When I was a NEWB, I used to fight from that very same book; another story for another time. Anyhow, you’ll simply want to drag and drop your new icon (of a worm all twisted on a hook) and place it in one of your new hotkeys. “But Gud’” you say, “I don’t know how to drag and drop.” Simple enough, just take your mouse, left click and HOLD it down, never releasing it, until you have literally drug an exact duplicate copy of the “twisted worm” over your new empty “hot key” place. When you think your close enough, simply let go of the mouse and BAM, its there, all nice and snug in your new key, ready to be used at your every whim. And if you just asked me how to relocate that very same key to a different portion, that’s simple enough also. Remember that advanced options tab I spoke of earlier? Just go back there and deselect the “lock action bar” and you’ll be able to go back and move that key, (and any other key for that matter) and place it anywhere you like. Warning: Forgetting to LOCK the action bar back can result in your death due to your weapons key disappearing when you click your sword button and give it to the Murloc that’s whipping you senseless. You’ve been warned, so don’t forget it.

Now that we’ve got all that established, let’s move to the last and final portion of the “How To”. Usually, but not all that time, the fishing trainer will also sell you a fishing pole. BUY IT. Now, all you have to do is simply equip the item. Just open your bags and find the pole and then place it in your main hand slot of your character. This will replace the weapon that is in your main hand, and for those who duel wield, it will remove both of them.

Now…walk along the shore to a safe and secure location. Once you’re comfortable enough, just aim your body towards the water, with fishing rod equipped and click that twisted worm icon. “Via la” you’ve now completed the most difficult portion of fishing and made your first successful cast. But you’re not going to catch anything on your first cast. Nor on your second, or probably even your 5th either! It’s all due to the fact that you’ve just started fishing. That’s not a problem either. There is but one way to avoid this. You can return to the fishing vendor and purchase some bate (IE, bright shinny baubles or some aquatic fishing devices) and then simply equip that item, or you can be a fool like I was a cast there forever.

“Equip?” you ask. Ahh, glad you reminded me, I almost forgot. You’ll have to go back to your character screen and open it back up. All you have to do is right click the “bait” and then click your fishing pole. It should then give your fishing pole that added “buff” that will instantly increase your fishing level by +100 for 5 minutes or +50 for…whatever, you’ve gotten the point. It will help speed up the process of leveling your fishing.

Fishing can be both interesting and beneficial; when and where to do it is the most difficult question to answer. My recommendation for when to fish is when you are soloing and your questing partner is gone, or when you’re at an impasse as for what to do. It’s a nice way to level a skill and a great benefit to those party members who just don’t have enough buffs in that all too important instance run.

More to follow, just wanted to get this out.

This is, by far, the best write up that I've ever seen on the STV event. Hope that you have fun with this one: http://www.capsu.org/wow/stranglethorn_fishing_extravaganza.html

Well, the one time i happened to be in the area during the fishing contest, the NPC who gives it was standing on the dock, kind of in the middle of booty bay. I doubt if he's hard to find.

The different areas have differing fishing levels so you would have to be whatever level is required for stranglethorn vale to be able to participate in the contest. I can't recall what the level there is though, sorry.

Oh and keep in mind your char. level. If your level is lower than the mobs down there you'll spend more time fighting off the mobs then fishing.
