So, which is better for a BM hunter to use the +40 armor bonus of a rugged kit or the +8 stamina of a knothide?

Cobra scale > all

And that answered his question how???

I'd go for the stamina kits. Extra healh is always good, but I'm sure some of the math experts would have better or more detailed answers to it.

Pallas, thanks for the reply and you were right, I was wondering if someone had done the math on it. I would assume that the +8 stamina would be better since knothide requires a higher LW skill but you never know.

I'm definitely not one to start in on the maths, but the +8 stamina buff will add 30% of the new stamina value of the hunter to the Pet. A +40 armour buff on the hunter will add 35% of the hunter armour value onto the pet. The pet should have more armour than you in the first place so a health boost is probably more advantageous than a minor armour boost.
I'm either hopelessly wrong or vaguely right, but I'm running with the +stamina boost with my hunter and my pets haven't started voicing any concerns. Yet.

When having the option between decent +sta or +armour I usually pick stamina.

Not only because it's usually more in terms of % but also because stamina gives a more general buff to your defense, not only against physical damage (like armour does) but also against spell damage.

Was I talking to you? No, ok then shut your mouth. You've been warned before about your behaviour from time to time, and as this is just completely over the top, enjoy your 3-day vacation. Being helpful is not an excuse for being rude.

but as magikhat said cobra scale armour s it gives you attack power or go for clefthoof armour as it gives stamina and agility

I thought clefthoof and cobrascale kits were for legs only?

Edit: I'm struggling to find any info that contradicts that thought. So the OP's armor kit comparison question is still valid considering there are 3 other places to put it besides the legs.

good point legs only on the cobra and clefthoof armour

I'll chime in on taking STA over armor for a hunter. I use an owl as a pet, so it does a good job of holding aggro on any melee mobs it's engaged with. If I start taking damage, it's almost always from a ranged mob that isn't getting hit with the owl's screech, and most ranged mobs in WoW are casters, who ignore armor.

At level 70 you are going to have around 4.5k armor. So an armor kit is only going to add a very minor amount of damage mitigation (because the mitigation drops off exponentially). But +8 stamina is ALWAYS plus 8 stamina. so go +8 stamina and the +30 stamina/+10 agi on the legs if you want stamina.

The cobra-hide is more min-max - pure AP and crit - this is designed more for a raiding DPSers armor kit.
