Well, I think that the only reason you sould pick engineering is if you want to have a boost to your PvP skills.

I have a lvl 60 Lock with enginnering to 300, and let me tell you, I spent hundreds of gold to get him to 300. Engineering costs a fortune to level, and the return in gold is minimal. I can craft scopes which do sell on AH to make some profit, but for the most part, Engineering is a money in, not a money out, profession.

So the perks? Well, you can make some killer things for PvP. Some of the gear I crafted at level 35 where simply phenomenal for that level. For example the Gnomish Death Ray, which could one shot kill many enemies in the 30-39 BG's. Or the Mithril dragon, a trinket that summons a dragon that is leveled by your engineering divided by 5. So at level 35, you could hit enginnering of 300 and have a level 60 pet fighting for you. I also use the Gnomish Net Gun a lot, even though it tends to misfire fairly frequently.

I will say that most of the gear you can craft for engineering is cloth, so wouldn't be much use to a Paladin. For my PvP Lock, it was great, but I think that you might be better served going with Blacksmithing. I'm probably going to dump it for Tailoring so I can make the epic cloth armor as I level from 60-70.

Hope this helps!

They are both money pits.

Some of the real money-makes in blacksmithing (the level 70 BoE weapons) are plans that drop in raid instances... can you get those? (only you can answer that).

Blacksmithing is downright PAINFULL to level. You'll spend hundreds of gold just getting to 300, and have nothing to show for it. Then you might start maknig some gear, but until you specialize, most of the things you'll make are crap compared to drops and instance drops.

Once you get the level 70 epic gear, its worth it though.

Engineering, while also expensive, is FUN. You'll get stuff to play with along the way, not just crap to vendor off.

There are various epic plate goggles at 350+ engineering since patch 2.1 now, so you'd have something to use at 70 from that too.
