Are any of the mods cheating or going to get me kicked off, i'm new and i'm scared to do illeagel things accidently.
i thought you'd know the stance of the ppl who run this forum by now... it'd be pretty damn hard to get banned from using stuff here...

I know but in one of the mods they put quote marks around, like hinting it was a cheat.

wait...mods like the administrators? or mods like UIcustomization?
I think he means "mods" as in add-ons, but has reason to be scared of the "mods" as in Aerath, too  (not that the moderators cheat)

undeadgnome, I would pretty much guarantee that any UI mods you find over at ui.worldofwar.net does NOT contain visurses, worms, or any code that Blizzard would count as a cheat.
If you make sure to only download those that has been downloaded by others at least a 100 times or so, I can guarantee it. Anything that would be "suspicious" would very soon be reported and removed.
I am not sure what you mean about quotation marks, but I wouldn't worry about it. Just follow the advice above until you are more at home with UI mods in WoW in general, at which point, you can probably spot any "suspicious" mods yourself. Blizzard created the possibility to use UI mods, and have by default limited any possibilities to "cheat" to near impossible. You will need to use some kind of hacking program to cheat, and worldofwar.net does not have any such things.

Don't worry about being banned.
I've spoken via phone with Blizzard and in game with several GMs grilling them about what mods are ok and which are not.
They leave it pretty much as a "grey area' --- they intentionally designed the game so that it was customizable; the answer I frequently got was that as long as it didn't "violate the principle of the game" it was fine.
I asked if they could clarify.
They didn't like "bottom feeder" which is an automated part of
"auctioneer". They don't mind auctioneer, but they forbid bottom feeder.
Note that probably everyone who uses Auctioneer uses Bottom Feeder anyway, but they said if they detected it they would probably warn you first to disable it, or some could just ban you.
But like I said, it's part of auctioneer, and I don't know how they could detect it, and 99% are using it anyway.
I personally do not, due to them already having told me not to,
and that I found I do not need it. I only focus on trade items in the AH and that is easy to scan myself in a matter of minutes.

1) If any mod you download is an .exe file delete it.
2) You should scan any mod you download for trojans and viruses.
3) You should make sure you have a good Anti-virus program and update it regularly - Mine checks for updates when I switch my PC on, and every 12 hours thereafter.
4) You should make sure you have a PROPER firewall. The inbuild XP one is a pile of cack. It only blocks some incoming and NO outgoing.
Your firewall should ask you for permission to allow a program to access the internet. It takes a few minutes to set it to allow your browser and email and wow to access. It will then block any Trojan you may be unlucky enough to get.
You'll be suprised how many programs want access to the internet - my ATI Hydravision wanted access - got told to sling it's hook :D

Bottom Feeder has since been redesign and had the automation removed. It is a legal addon again I believe. I think that blizz actually broke the old version so it couldn't work any more even if you still had a copy.

That is true, bottomfeeder hasnt been around for months. They released bottomscanner with auctioneer and that is perfectly legal to use. It is also true they disabled the functionality and the only way to get it back would be to hack some game files.

I never liked it. It always seemed useless, especially since most of my auctions that i mess with are trade goods, mostly enchanting, and I don't like to move outside of that. lol

@ OP:
There's 1 very simple way to find out if an addon is legal: Open it's folder. Check the filetypes, .toc, .lua, .xml, and .txt are safe, if there's nothing but those types it CAN'T be a cheat as Blizzard got full control of what these filetypes can do to the game. It might be a virus that'll format ur harddrive, but it can't be a cheat. If it contains a .exe file.. well, there's still a chance it's legal, but I try to avoid them. Not worth the risk imo as Blizzard haven't got any control of what these files can do.
Take BottomFeeder as an example. Just before the 2.0 patch the creator of it asked Blizzard if it was legal. The response, according to his site, was that they didn't exactly like it, but it was OK that you used it.
Next patch - 2.0 that is - they ticked off a field making it so that you needed some "hardware input" to bid on an auction (you had to press a key on ur keyboard, mouse, joystick, anything that showed u were at ur computer) and BottomFeeder was no longer of any use, as the 'safe' filetypes from above can't simulate hardware input. No one was ever banned as it wasn't a cheat before that patch, and it hasn't been of any use after.
Only dangerous thing about Addons (from this site, anyway) is that you get too used to them, and so you spend a couple of days updating all your addons after each major patch..
I never liked it. It always seemed useless, especially since most of my auctions that i mess with are trade goods, mostly enchanting, and I don't like to move outside of that. lol
Roughly 95% of the auctions that it suggests bidding on are either:
A) Enchanting materials under the normal price.
B) Items being sold at less than what a vendor would pay. Instant profit for a resale.
C) Items that can be disenchanted to increase their value.
Other than that you can set it up to ignore auctions that you don't have lots of data on, it'll pretty much limit u to buying netherweave and potions, but that's not too bad.

Bottom Feeder was removed from Auctioneer a long time ago. There is Bottom Scanner, but that is a completely different animal.
