When were the last servers opened? Are there any plans to open new servers; if so, when?

TBC. No. When the low pop servers are filled up!?

Funny I was about to make a topic asking why kids are always spamming for new servers on the official forums. What the heck is the difference when you can just reroll on a low pop server?

I'd like to know what the interest in a new server is too. There are so many servers and quite a few of them are virtually dead if their denizens are to be believed.

If a server is dead, its dead; theres no saving it. Who wants to start on a low pop server filled with lvl 70s who have no intrest in low level characters? With a new server comes a freash economy, more people to group with, and the rush of trying to be one of the first to 70. This game is very boring when you only have a hand full of people at the same content level as you, and items that help you solo are way over priced thanks to credit farmers and not enough lower levels to farm them.

New Servers are for those who want a fresh start. Many people can't get into the top raiding guild on they're server, but they believe that the only reason they can't get in is because they weren't there from the beginning. Therefore, if there were a new server, all they have to do is be there at the beginning and make the first uber guild. Then they'll be famous and revered in their own part of cyberspace. Yup.

So pick a different server? I rolled on Lightninghoof, a fairly well established server. There are plent of level 70s with an interest in low level characters, many new players and many alts being leveled. Everytime I've looked there's been someone to group with. Anyway, the official answer is:

Unfortunately, the answer to this question has never changed. It has always been some form of this:

"We regret that we cannot provide any information about new servers at this time. We will announce new servers as soon as we are able. Please stop asking, as this answer will not change, and the question has become spam."

Unfortunately as well, the response to that is most commonly:

"We don't want an ETA or anything, just tell us when it might be!"
There is no telling them at this point that they have just asked for an ETA despite saying they are not. It's akin to saying "I do not want any money, just give me a dollar." This analogy will be lost on them, I assure you.

Shortly followed by:

"Why are you ignoring us? If you'd just answer we would stop asking."
Here, too, there is no telling them that they are not being ignored, that the question has been answered. Unfortunately for all of us, an undesired answer is not really the same thing as being ignored. The fine line between the two is imperceptible to anyone still asking. Not to mention the fact that nothing short of banning would actually cause them to stop asking. Which is why they tend to get banned.

Hence, they stopped answering. Where we stand now?

When they can tell us, they will do so, and you will not need to ask. Until they can tell us, they will not, and you may as well not.

Also, when new servers are added, you can't create new Characters on them initally.

(At least that is how it was when I transfered to my new server)

Other way around? You can't transfer to them for a certain window of time, but you can create characters on them. Or do I have it wrong?

IIRC a while back Blizzard implemented a system that stopped people from creating new characters if the server was very busy, because creating new chars is remarkably straining on the hardware (At this point I said WTF, but anyways). What may be happening on new servers is since so many people are rolling new chars (mains, bank/AH alts, gold-spamming bots, etc) the server can hit the threshold where it says "no more" for a few hours, rather than causing excessive lag for people already in the game or forcing people who already have chars to wait in queue. Please note this is just an eduated guess since I havn't rolled on a new server in quite a while (been on Medivh US since it went live).

Edit: I'm also almost certain that you can't transfer to a new server until weeks after it has gone live. This makes sense since you don't want an army of 70s invading and polluting the fresh economy.

Well what would be a nice thing to do is to combine the populations of low servers and re-release the empty one as a fresh server.

IIRC, it is 6 months.

It seems to me there is always someone at your level of the game, whether it be actual level numbers or someone in your phase of whatever attunements you're doing. If people think like this then yes a low pop server will stay dead, what makes you think a new server would not be any different eventually?

IIRC, it is 6 months.

Could have sworn it was 3 months but regarldes, a fresh start + 6 months is more than likely not enough time to establish a new end game scene from scratch. More than likely this server is going to be abandoned by the "new server locusts" and will be open to free transfers, at which point some guilds are sure to transfer in and take over. What's the point?
