I was browsing around for Warhammer and ran into Darkfall. I find their concepts very interesting. See, you can build your own house, city or fleet and then declare war with other clans. Overcome other clans and take over their cities.

You can hire NPCs to protect your properties or provide services for you.

Other than take evil or justice sides, you can be a merchant that sets up vendor shops in friendly cities and sell your merchandise to other players.

Be a pirate. Team up with your friends and rob merchandise ships in the open sea.

There is no leveling so there is no grindings. You can learn both magic spells and weapons skills. To master your skills, you just practice and use them after you learn them not by leveling yourself.

BTW, they are recruiting beta testers; some of you might be interested.

Google darkfall and tell me what do you think.

I've been watching this one too.

New video out - looks like it's coming along nicely so far.

I've been watching the progress of this game for a while, because it seems to be based on many of the same principles that made pre-Renaissance UO so good. Sadly, however, it seems more and more like vapourware (I seem to recall them advertising the upcoming beta in 2006), or at least to be on the same tracks as Vanguard, promising much more than it can deliver. The community that's built around it so far also seems very poor and childish compared to the old UO one, although if as many Siege Perilous folks from move from UO to Darkfall if/when it opens as have expressed an interest, I may take another look.

The game's been in development since 2001 and beta has been announced and then not started twice now, so it does have some vapor-like qualities. However, if you read the Dev updates you can forgive at least some of this behavior. They are as of yet independent and have been self-funded this entire time which means they get to decide when to publish.

They repeatedly emphasize that they are dedicated to releasing a complete game after seeing the vast majority of MMOs launch prematurely and fail. They also seem to be one of the only MMO developers that learned that lesson after watching WoW achieve wild success and most other recent ventures fail horribly.
