View Full Version : Fishing - Is it worth it?

G'day,
I've had about 4 chars, each over level 20, and my main is currently a 45 shadow priest.
My question is...is fishing worth leveling up?
On my other characters, the highest fishing level I got was about 30, and that was only done by turning around to the TV behind me while waiting for the bobber, to help try and stop the boredom. Does it get rewarding at all? I'm a preist so I generally dont need/use food as I just heal myself when I need it, but are there any other benefits of fishing, and spenting countless hours getting my fishing up higher?
Cheers for the replies in advance :)

Yes. You can catch cool stuff (locked boxes and the such), make a little money (some fish sell OK at the AH) and level up cooking at the same time. The buf's from some of the higher level cooking recipee's are well worth it even for a healing class.
Early on I made several gold at the AH selling the Oily Blackmouth, deviate fish, etc. I just level my fishing a little here and there while waiting for boats, waiting for people , etc. Its not a fast leveling profession but worth doing if you are near water and have nothing else to do.

Deviate Fish caught and cooked into Savory Deviate Fish sell in the AH for between 17g and 20g for a stack of 20.
I caught over 100 fish and cooked them and in 2 days had made a serious profit - in fact other than the spices and flight travel costs, its 100% profit.
Blackmouth fish are used by alchemists for swimming potions and Im sure there are other fish useful too.
Neither of the above really needs a high fishing skill though, just a maximum hour of your time a couple of days a week.

it is NOT worth it for making money. Definitly not.
It is boring, takes long time ( yes, even after the patch ), and did i mention that it is so horribly mindboogling boring ?

fishing and cooking are very very good and are almost compulsory skills now IMO.
Remember that you cannot take more than 2 buff potions (1 guardian and 1 battle elixir) or 1 flask to buff yourself. Not more potting like mad for end game.
Consequently scrolls and food now pay a larger part of pre-buffing before a fight.
Outland food is pretty good.
Examples:
Warp Burger 20 Agi + 20 Spir 30 mins
Roast Clefthoof 20 Str + 20 Spir
Basilsik 23 Spell damage + 20 spir
Spicy Crawdad 30 Stam + 20 Spir
Ravager Dog ?? Attack Power + 20 Spir
Golden fish Sticks 44 healing + 20 Spir
Bluefin 23 Spell power + 20 spir
Mudfish 20 Agi + 20 Spir
Sporefish 20 Stam + 8 mp/5
+ others that give 20 stam and Spir.
30 minutes compared with the 15 minutes pre TBC.
Also most (not all) Ourland food is 7500 health regen over 30 secs - which is a lot - rank 12 renew is only a base of 1110 Hp over 15 secs.
Fish pools in Outland have a small % chance to give Inscribed scrollcases containing 1-3 rank 5 scrolls (Spirit +30 , Armour +300, Stam Agi Str or Intell +20)

Depends on faction and server. On my server (horde) they go for 2G to 6G per stack of 20 depending on the day. On my alliance toons I see them priced a little higher but no where near 17-20G.

LOL well hand on heart thats what I was getting. I admit competition sometimes drives prices down and I have seen them as low as you state - in which case I buy them and sell them on (rubs hands together like ebeneezer scrooge)
Even so at 6g for a stack of 20, its still a decent profit:time ratio.

It's nice if you are doing something else anyway. I've done homework while fishing and made a decent profit. It more or less comes down to if you are willing to sit and fish out a profit. It takes a bit more time, but it makes, as Chunderpants previously stated, almost a 100% profit.

<3 Outland food buffs. That said, only train cooking/fishing on one character so you don't have to burn all that time again. : )

If you want to start leveling fishing, make sure you catch the right fish to level cooking at the same time. There's no reason not to get 300+ cooking for outland food if you're going to fish for half an eternity anyway. Once you get up to 250+ you might want to scale down on the fishing to 5-10 skillups per day, or it will simply be too boring.

I wasnt aware there was enough time in a 24 hour span to get more than 10 skill-ups anyway.

I've gotten him once. Got a buff, enraged mr. pinchy, then a debuff. I will get him as a pet. I WILL.

I don't think its fun at all, but I would like fish sticks for the raid and they are very hard to find on my server. If they are available they are 80g per stack.
I know several people in my guild can make them, but the fish are never available...
Does leveling fishing slow down once you hit the higher levels? I went from 20-120 in an hour yesterday in the stormwind canal.

yeah as you skillup it starts to require more catches to get a point. this is the scale. i don't think this is entirely accurate, but it gives you the idea. i'm fairly sure it started taking 2-3 at around 80.
Number of Successful Catches Required to Gain a Point of Skill, Approximate Fishing Skill
1: 1
2: 100
3: 115
4: 140
5: 165
6: 190
7: 215
8: 240
9: 265
10: 290
After 300, each skill-up takes at least 10 catches. 300-340, an average of 10.5 catches per skill point; 340-375 an average of 11.5 catches per skill point.

I hate fishing.
I hate questing.
I just learned that not only will I have to fish more at higher levels, but I have to do some quest to go above 225.
*pushes fishing to the side.
I think i'll do something else to buy those fish sticks.

lol its not that bad man. i'm kind of lucky and have my wife fish for me when she is bored. she only has me up to like 150 atm, but i was telling her bout the quest she'll have to do and i think she might have gotten a lil excited bout it. maybe i can turn her into a gamer after all.

Hmmm... Guess I just don't get it.
I Love Fishing! It's great! I have every fishing related thing I could find, except the fishing pole for winning the fishing tournament. I won once, and took the "turn into a fish" trinket. I have the hats, the boots, the fishing line, the rod from Hinterlands, gloves with the enchant. I even had my tailoring alt make me some overalls for my fishing trips.
Once in a while I'll spend the evening wandering up and down the Tanaris coast filling my bags. I usually net 50G-100G from a trip like that, depending on how lucky and the price of stonescale eels that week. It's also how I keep my alts in healing pots.
So, I guess I'm just a freak. I don't see what's so boring about fishing. (I fish a lot in real life, too. That might have something to do with it.)
My girlfriend likes it, too. She had a blast doing the Nat Pagles quest.
*edit*
I'm interested in this Mr Pinchy thing. I never heard of that before. I'll have to go do some searching for that. Yay! A reason to fish some more!

There's a guy in Ironforge that sends you to Nat. See him first as you don't want to have to trek all the way to Nat's island, only to find that he won't give you the quest!

We've been going fishing after raids. Eat a savoury deviate delight, cast water walking, there you go 5-6 ninja 70s fishing, standing on the water in the harbour in booty bay.
Quite funny in general STV last night
[1.] Need high level help for xyz
[1. Me] Sorry, we are all fishing
Then it turns into a party in the harbour with me casting water walking on everyone - i go through a LOT of fish oil

Fishing is extraordinarily worth it. It may seem pointless in Azeroth if you're a class who doesn't eat much (I'm a mage, so I never ate what I caught), but once you hit Outlands, it's suddenly delicious and profitable. You should level your cooking at the same time, and you'll be making stam food, agility food, strength food, MP5 food, spelldamage food, and healing food. I use stam and spelldamage fish and sell the others or give it to guildies in exchange for DE-ing, transmutes, etc. The nice thing about these buffs is that they stack with pots and class buffs - e.g., if you're a squishy fire bomb like me, you will definitely like having prayer of fortitude stack with stam fish when running an instance. Or, if you're farming and you'd like to speed things up, you can eat a piece of spelldam fish instead of using up your expensive wizard oil.
Obviously, since you won't need each and every buff, you can sell the others. Golden fishsticks (44 healing) sell for a good 25-30g a stack and golden darters are relatively easy to catch. Huge spotted feltail and furious crawdad are THE fish to catch (30 stam buff), but they are so infrequent, everyone tends to squirrel them for their own raids. Other food, like roasted clefthood (20 strength), is a joke to farm and while it sells for less, you can still make 4-5g a stack off it. I sell some and give the rest to the tanks (just like I split my fishsticks between AH and our healers).
Boring, but great for those times when you feel like playing, but you're too braindead to do anything that requires concentration.
PS: could be a cheap way to keep your kid busy?

I finally got to fish in zangarmarsh last night, caught about 40 fish (I can only do it with the aquadynamic thingy, my fishing is at 260). Sold all those fish raw on AH for about 10g. Wow. I just threw them up there because I noticed other people did.
Don't tell anyone about fishing! tell em its all boring and not worth it!!!
ps. i have an engineer friend making me 40 of the aqua-thingies now :)

As said, cooked fish can sell very well in the ah, and most have a good stat boost. As for going any higher than you are... I stopped at 300.

you would be amazed at how much a 8 year old enjoys WoW fishing :)
I level cooking, first aid and 2 professions on all of my characters, but fishing only on 1. It is much better now with 20 seconds casting and no "fish got away" anymore. Plus I was among the first 15 or so people on my server with an epic flying mount - which means I was on the elemental plateau when it wasn't overfarmed..and of the people farming, few would fish. The amounts of motes of water that I got from there alone made fishing worthwhile.
As for food buffs..the icefish are okay, but a rare catch...if I need spellfood, I kill basilisks,

WTB 8-year old to level my fishing PST
I started seriously leveling my fishing when the tier 0.5 armor set quest came. First I just fished enough Stonescale Eels (I think it was) for me and my brother, but after seeing how much they were worth at the AH, I kept going and got filthy rich selling them to people who didn't want to fish it themselves (god bless all you guys that find fishing boring. You sponsored my epic mount).
After that, when my guild started running ZG twice a week, I fished when the raid was assembling, buffing and making water. As the main tank I had no part in any of that, so I had about 15-30 or so minutes before each raid (I even started showing up early, so I could get more fishing done). That got me all the way to 300 (that was a guild-first, and since that raid was a farming run, I think it was the high-point of the day :) ).
I love fishing (I fish in RL too), and there are some great food and profit to be had. But now Im just really annoyed that there are no fishing waters in any Outland raid instances Ive been to.........

I use to do fishing on a level 19 twink, use to farm the greater sagefish while waiting for those super long queues before xrealm battlegrounds. It was a good way to make some money while I waited :)

I levelled my fishing almost without thinking about it whiling away the times when I couldn't be bothered to do anything else by fishing deviates in the barrens :)
One thing that hasn't been mentioned - with 375 skill plus a lure (+75 or +100) means you can fish motes of water from pure water pools :) But don't all skill up at once now, I like my serene farming of motes of water! Those elementals are a pain for a frostmage :/

I cried as I threw them away, but it wouldn't let me have more than one out at a time. I would have loved to run around Shat with 3 magical crawdads with me
Keep on fishing :sunny:
