I've been on sick leave for the last few weeks, and not really been capable of doing much apart from watching a vast amount of daytime tv (not even WoWing  ) - which includes watching the Jerry Springer show for the first time in about eight years.

I have some questions that I hope the Americans on this forum might be able to answer  as I'm in the UK and Trisha and Jeremy Kyle aren't a patch on this.

1. Why do all the guests strip, and how long has this been going on?
2. Why on earth does half the audience strip??
3. What is the significance of the beads that the stripping audience members are given?
4. These guests, they're actors/failed actors/drama students/porn actors or whatever, yes? Not real people?
5. How long has the set looked like a sewer? (very apt)

Perhaps you're all better people than me and don't watch it, but I'm sure it must be a few people's guilty secret

Thanks!

Haha, the Jerry Springer show started out as a semi-decent talk-show, but when the ratings weren't cutting it, the producers began paying the guests to do outlandish things. I saw the price list...in it was things like going topless, slapping, punching, fighting, cussing, etc.

And since you have been watching it repetetively for so long, you will also tend to notice that guests make reappearances...a lot....and each time they have a different wife/girlfriend/child/grandmother/etc.

So no, nothing on it is really real anymore....or if the topics are real, then everything is grossly exaggerated due to money.

And the beads....the beads are typical of Mardi Gras, when guys toss beads at girls to have them strip.

And please don't think that it has anything to do with a majority of Americans. We (on the most part) all hate it.

I believe the show to be some form of social museum, displaying all forms of weird and frankly bafflingly unrealistic behaviour. The characters appear to be irrational for the most part and heavily exaggerated.

A quick Youtube search has revealed several rather...irregular scenes, not irregular in regard to the content of the show however, just the normal social norms. Beware thee of light heart, for your confidence in humanity may be shaken by witnessing the content below:
