I noticed when exp came EVERYONE was talking jewelcrafting.
Now hardly any post.
Is this another engineering trade or money sink that no one wants?
I just changed to it and got to 80's and its frustrating.
1st since I got jewelcrafting and the skill that allows you to take ore and
find gems in the ore...destroying it in the process I have not hit one gems in
any mining. WT so if you have this skill the game makes gems from mining 0% chance? I have gone up about 100 in mining in the last week and 0 gems from nodes.
The items don't seem that usefull, I was hoping to make and sell getting to cutting but this is pitiful...most items are just junk.
Was this a big mistake trying to go jewelcrafting ?
maybe a shaman should go skinning and lw instead.

Mine the ore, then prospect it. Theres your gems.
When you get higher in level, you can make some rare gems, making a decent profit.
On top of that, you can go to the AH, buy a crap ton of ore, and prospect it. Adamantite has an 18% chance of giving you a blue that will sell for (on my server) 60-80 gold. A stack of adamantite is 20g. Along with the chance ofa blue, you wil get greens and dust, all of which would sell on the AH. So, assuming an 18% chance of getting a blue, you would barely make profit.
But, if you get lucky and prospect 2 blues in a row, that right there is a profit of about 130g.

Stigg is your prospecting the same as your jewelcrafting level?
I assume that I need to get some more skills in jewelcrafting before trying this.
I need to level it up but at 88 I can't find anything to make that would allow me to get 20-30 levels quickly without 4-5 ingredients and a gems I buy so with no value on ah it looks like to 180-200 skill range would cost 50-100 gold.
Still got time before flying mount on my lock so I will send him some money.
Damn I hate poor relatives LOL

Who said I had JC? :)
Check out: http://wow.crafterstome.com/guide/jewelcrafting.html
(mods, no gold ads, but there aer forums, delete if you want)
If that gets deleted, do a google search on "Jewelcrafting guide"
It is a lot like enchanting and engineering. It is expensive and relatively worthless until you get to the endgame of it. You can pick up some nifty trinkets that only JCs can use, but if you are raiding, these will more than likely get quickly replaced.

My JC is at level 325+ right now. In the begining I took a look at what was selling in the AH to recoup some of my cost and thats what I made. Low level jewerly level 20 and below sold really good. Prospect most of your ore. I never bought any ore, only mined as I was questing and I had plenty to get my JC up. A couple of the rings around 150+ sell pretty good. They take a little more to make but if your prospecting the majority of your ore you should have plenty of jewels. I was level 35 and making rings that sold for 10g each and was getting points for them. I was Jewelcrafting before the patch and sometimes I won't even get a gem from prospecting. I lost alot of thorium prospecting ;-( Thanks goodness that is fixed. I don't understand why everyone says there is no money to be had jewelcrafting. I had enough money form selling jewelry at level 60 to get my epic mount with no problems. I didn't buy mats at the AH thou. If you buy mats at the AH you will lose money big time. If your patience and take it slow you should have no problems. The cut gems for sockets are awesome. Good luck!

stigg don't blow a gasket :)
I just assumed that you had JC, my bad.
again thanks for the help though and the link it mentions several things that I needed to know.
Arwen what rings and things can you make money with, are they vendor recipies or ?
I was selling Brilliant Necklace for 1.2G each but ran out of moss agates...so I was buying them for 50-75S each and making and selling just to level up...NOW the moss is over 1.5G each...that is crazy so I am moving on to Ring of Silver Might.

Stigg's not blowing a gasket.
I think the reason that there aren't as many JC threads as there were right after the TBC release is because at the TBC release, most people knew nothing about JC, but it was new so everyone wanted to know, even if they weren't planning a jewelcrafter of their own. Most of the people that have been playing since then that were interested have either done it already, or lost interest, so instead of many/most players wondering how prospecting works, most know how it works.
I recently leveled a JC to 350 in about 48 hours, mostly from mats that I had laying around. As long as you haven't smelted everything, it's pretty easy to do, since you can't prospect smelted ore, and you're going to get at least a decent share of your gems for leveling from prospecting instead of just mining.
Arwen: At lvl 325, if you're friendly with the Consortium, you'll want to head to netherstorm to pick up the recipe for the purified jaggal pearl. Why? Because you'll make money getting the next 18 or so skill points, even if you are buying mats from the AH and vendoring the results. On the server I have my jewelcrafter on, jaggal pearls usually go for 60s each, maybe a bit higher. Combine one pearl with a purified draenic water (13s), get a skill point, and vendor the results for a 27s profit.

the royal talasite and the 12stam gems go for sick amount on my server. Every tank / PvP person will load up on them after an improve of their gear. All the healers will get the talasites (9heal 2mp5) imediately.
goldmine rite there

Actually you don't need any rep from the consortuim to make the purified jaggal pearl. I learned it from the trainer in Shattrah. On my server thous sell from 3-4g each so they are a good profit. I haven't bought any pearls from the AH. I had some from questing. I try to farm my mats or use what I have. I avoid the AH unless its something I am making for myself and I don't have the mats. I am working on being Honored with the consortium atm. They have some sweet recipes. I am up to 333 and plan on making mostly cut gems (don't need alot of mats and they are in demand). I make them and give them to my friends for thier armor also. I have been skilling up making the Mercurial Adamantine. I luckily have a high level alchemist for a questing buddy who made me the stone for the mats. That saved a ton ;-)
In an answer to the question above I made the Golden ring of power and the true silver commander ring. The commander ring is a great seller on my server it goes form 8-13g.

Arwen, true. However, you can't get to that trainer if you're Scryer. And the purified jaggal pearl doesn't sell for that much on my server (barely over the vendor price, in fact), so in both cases, it's a case of "your experience may differ." Good information though, as I'm sure it will apply to some people, especially the Aldor trainer. 325 is kind of a low JC skill to be needing Consortium rep, so it's more likely that someone at that skill level hasn't picked Aldor/Scryer yet (I had because I was lvl 69 when I took up JC).

I had no choice but to be a Aldor, my JC is a draenei. The Scryers banish me from the city if I even go near there side. I could grind rep to hang with Blood elves but ...nah I dont think so LOL.

I find many gems through mining ... just not one per node obviously. Gatherer tells me I have about 5% chance of getting 1 of 3 different gems per type of node ... that's 15% total... not bad.
