View Full Version : Priest: Tailoring and ?
First time playing a priest for me. I'm level 20 now. I am thinking of trying tailoring so I can make my own cloth items. What would be a good profession to go along with it? Enchanting?
I also posted this in the Priest forum before seeing this forum.

i too went with tailoring with my latest toon, which happens to be a priest, mainly for the pmc set late in the game. i got leatherworking to go with it cuz it went well with my playstyle. i'll need prolly around 120 rugged leathers to skillup my tailoring, but that isn't the reason i took skinning. after i kill something the spirit tap kicks in and it gives me a few more seconds of downtime while my increased spirit recharges my mana. just works well with priests.
alot of people choose to work enchanting with tailoring cuz you can disenchant the items you create and level both at the same time. both tailoring and especially enchanting are a bit of gold sinks though. so unless you got the gold i might would stay away from that one.

Yeah, that was mentioned in the Priest forum too. ><
I'll figure it out I guess. Thanks for the comments.

Long time no see, Amra. In fact, I didn't know you still posted here.

hey snowieken. I just started really. My post count is this high due to the forum split 2+ (or more?) years ago. I am just getting into WoW.
But I still post at the DII Off-topic (Platinum Pal now) and also at the new StarCraft2 forum. I'm siced for SC2.
Always loved your 'tar. We are alike in that we didn't change ours every month.

Oh, I thought I saw you posting here before.
Yeah, got about 2000 posts from diabloii.net merged in my post count as well. Heck, when Ash introduced himself to the forums a few months ago (no sign of him now, though), he drew some pretty amazed comments about his post count when people never heard of him before.
As you might know, I keep posting "Hi, I'm back" threads on the dii.net OTF every once in a while, but I never seem to be able to stay there. Too much work here, too much of playing WoW, I don't know.
And yes, the tar.. I have it since the beginning, so to speak, since I joined the site back in... 2001, I think.

Speaking of which, yours is borked - might want to re-upload it.
Yeah, I know I need to upload my tar again.

heh, it's all good as long as you are having fun!
Hey Amra,
Good to see you over here:)
Talking of tars, yours is fubard for me. I think it's left over from one of our crashes - remember how sometimes on the d2 forums we need to reupload our tars? Well, I think that's happened here. I see a blue pixilated thingie for yours.

You don't actually want to pick up tailoring that early, even if it's definitely worth it later on. Level to 60+ with 2 gathering professions - mining/skinning/herbalism. Save every piece of cloth you get on the way, except for what you need to level first aid. If you choose skinning as one of your 2, routinely save a few stacks of leather. Also save all the felcloth you come across, as 290-300 tends to be a tad tedious.
Since there is an abundance of tailors, the netherweave and imbued netherweave sets AH for a song, so you could actually postpone tailoring till 70. The main reason for that is that you will get netherweave up the wazoo while grinding your reps, along with disenchantable greens, so there is no reason why you should be buying netherweave and arcane dusts.
Once you're approaching 70, drop one of your gathering professions and learn your tailoring in a day. 365-375 tends to be annoying as well, but I lucked out and had to make only one extra imbued netherweave robe. Make sure you also make your epic belt and gloves once they become available, for a guaranteed point that won't go to waste.
In the process, make friends with an enchanter and have all your netherweave stuff disenchanted. Since the market is flooded with it, you'll find better use for the mats (I haven't had to buy mats for a single enchant so far, and I get them on every piece that can be enchanted).
Keep a gathering profession for extra income. You could always farm motes, but I highly dislike competing with other players/farmers/bots for that poor lonely elemental, so I skin and buy my primals off the AH.
Enchanting is a pretty bad idea if you don't have a higher level character who can easily farm instances for disenchantable items. I did it on my first toon and it was horrendously expensive to get to 300. It gets better once you are able to DE Outlands greens (225+) and sell the mats, and the rare recipes will get you good tips. However, I'm not sure that the moneysink along the way is really worth it. It's one of those professions which are best done in a guild (i.e. someone is the designated enchanter and everyone sends mats to help level). Also, keep in mind that priests, like all casters, don't really get good until about lv 40, so save yourself the pain and pick up professions which will allow you to have your mounts as soon as you level and any gear you may covet along the way. If you're deadset on enchanting, try levelling a hunter along the way and use it to farm for your priest.
felinessa, thanks for the info but I think my head just exploded. Level 60 is a long, long way off.

Although having two gathering professions is a solid piece of advice, as it will make things easier for you, I have always been two-folded about that. I believe it is making new players miss a whole lot of the game. For lots of players, crafting is a joy: making your own equipment in the early levels (and later on as well, although to a much lesser extent), making your first green, your first blue, and eventually your first purple item. You're going to miss a lot of that when you take up a craft when you're high level. Well, you are still going to make a first green, blue or purple, but it would have lost all its meaning at that higher level.
What I mostly propose is to keep the gathering professions for an alt, so that alt can become your "money-maker". On the other hand, tailoring goes well with any gathering professions since it is stand-alone. I do acknowledge that two gathering professions will net you the most money, both early on and in the long run. It basically comes down to what you want with your character, I guess. But again, I do believe newcomers miss a lot of the game if they do nothing else with gathered materials than selling it on the Auction House. Friend of mine has got the advice (like many of us did) to take on two gathering professions - he took Mining and Skinning - and at level 18 he was asking in general what Copper Ore is actually used for.
You bring up some good points for me to consider. I was thinking it would be cool to have my priest make his own items and here I've gotten away from that. :undecided:
