My guild uses Ventrilo and I have been looking for a mod for us to use that will show us who is talking and who is logged on vent.

I did find a application that runs outside of WoW that puts the information on the screen but I dont trust the application since it crashes all the time.

I was thinking of making a mod that would do this but im not familiar with everything that Blizzard allows us to do with the UI mods.

are we able to have the UI mods communicate with outside programs like Ventrilo.

I know Ventrilo is setup to were you can pull a XHML file with who is logged in and when someone speaks.

is this possible?

WoW addons cannot contact with ANYTHING outside of WoW at all. Sorry.

It is possible to create something similar to what you want though, but it will be highly limited. It invovles having the addon check when the puch-to-talk key is pressed, therefore everyone in the Vent channel must be using the addon and the push-to-talk feature.

in a way that sux but you did give me a Idea.

this might be what your talking about.
but does Blizzard allow the UI mods on two different clients to talk with each other.

for example if I write a mod to look for the key press (or find another way to trigger that they are talking) and pass the user information to the other mods and then display there name.

Yes, it's possible. There are a few mods that have this feature built into them, like X-Perl.

I think I've seen a mod on one of the sights that was standalone, but it was a while ago. But as Jaedx pointed out, EVERYONE would have to have the mod for it to work the way you want it. Eventually Blizz is gonna add in-game voice comm, just not sure when.

As far as the the 3rd party application, which one are you using? I've been using VoiceOverlay Alpha 1.1 for a while and have yet to have any problems with it.
