View Full Version : Compilation?

Just wondering something -- how many of us here at the WorldofWar community use UI compilations, and how many have their own UI designs. Please, just answer the question straight. I don't want this to turn into a witch-hunt, with all the proud UI designers going after the comp users for their choices.
Edit: If you're embarassed about your comp usage, don't worry; I've made the poll private.
Edit: This isn't entirely random. I may put the answers to good use (you'll find out what I mean soon enough if I do decide to), so it'd be appreciated if you could take the few seconds to answer.

We care here regardless. And this thread specifically has a purpose so all input counts.

I design my own, after learning many lessons from UI Comp's.

I honestly don't like compilations much. They always seem to include 5 more mods than I'd want and always pick the wrong memory-hogging one for [insert useful thingamabob here].
I just worked on what I have now over time, adding what I need and replacing stuff that was giving me issues.

Thanx for caring jaed lol =D I used to use compilations after i discovered modding, gradually i began stripping things out of compilations and then finally i strated choosing mods individually =]
I am very ineterested in interface design and all its aspects. i studied New MEdia Graphic Design and am now trying to get into web and interface design so I sort of view WoW UI design as an extension of that =]

What about a compilation that's aimed at fixing these issues? It'll have a dialog box that opens up upon the first load welcoming the user and informing them about what the package does, what each individual mod does, and how to clear out unused mods, as well as info on configuring the UI for the best results.

I feel that'd be useful, but might be overestimating the user of said compilations.
Mind you, this is just a gut feeling, but I think that the ones most inclined to a package want it because it's "the easy way out to a fancy looking ui" (read, those thousand DAB packages that look great, eat your memory like no tomorrow and obscure pretty much all there is to see in your view...).
My opinion is that those people want a package that -doesn't- ask them questions or tells 'em why to use a mod. They want a package they can install and then brag about having a gorgeous UI.
Though, I do have a somewhat cynical view on most of mankind and don't intend to dissuade you from creating a great package.

hmm the user customizable package?
a selection of different packages ranging from basic to full on?
what might be better is to supply settings file, lie the wtf setup with the package so it actually has a set design when downloaded making it more than a compilation but a genuine predefined UI Configuration. But tbh wit people using different monitor sizes and resolutions etc prolly would be very successful. I like the idea of the in game helper, essential to the idea tho is the inclusion of an in game mod management tool (i use khaos config but im sure there r better ones) so people can experiment in game with what they want then leave and remove un wanted mods later.

I have a way to combat screen-res-related problems by using an external file to set realtive positioning. Basically, have an external addon take over the handling of frame positions of every other addon and have these frame positions set not by an off-set, but by relating them to screen positions. Example: The Violation window would be taken over and set to always be 10px from the bottom and 20px to the right.
Edit: I'm gonna scrap the idea. Not only do I not wish to put that much time into an interface just for others, but I just don't think it's necessary. I can bet my interface won't be used properly anyway; I want to make it to combat the problems with most interfaces, that is, stop the issues that the use of an interface causes by informing the user of each individual aspect of the UI and how to enhance it for his/her own usage. But ultimately it'll just become the same as every other comp: something that some lazy person who lacks creativity downloaded and doesn't care to bother with anymore than showing it off.

Doesn't MazzleUI already offer this form of set up?
And while I personally liked MazzleUI and for the new player it is excellent, I found that it was not configurable enough for my liking. And when you went to update, you had to update their mod because they modified a large number of the mods to do what they needed.
So what I guess I am saying, your idea is great, IF you use unaltered mods that can be removed or updated without breaking the whole package. And individual mods can be configured in game, Mazzle may have fixed it since I last tried their package, but you could not reconfigure bongos or simpleminimap without messing up the whole screen.
Just a thought or two,
EDIT: OK, just read your edit, forget what I said...

 Nah, don't worry about it. I'm just not sure I want to do it anyway. Seems like a lot of work for nothing.
