Hi!
Rottentomato has an excellent hunter's guide (it's under the 'guides' forum on here, you should check it out).
I played a hunter up to about mid 20s, and found that I really liked Beast Mastery. But i would suggest you go through all the talents and figure out which ones you feel your game!
As for pets, if you good petopia ( i think that's the name) you can get a site dedicated to wow pets. it lists all the pet you can get in the game, their stats and what they're best for!
as for professions - skinning i think is great for a hunter since you have beast tracking. if you'd like to capitalize on cash - perhaps consider another gathering trade like mining....or if you would prefer not too, skinning and leather working is also a great choice, since you will be able to use what you produce! :)
hope this helped!

There isnt a set way to go with any of this as you should know with the differing Warrior talent trees, although most agree at early levels to go into:
Talents; BM
Pet; Boar
Professions; *plucks 2 from the air*
What did I choose?
Talents; MM
Pets; Bear/cat
Profs; engineering for ammo & mining
But all this is in the hunter forum already - just read through & do what you want & enjoy :)

Personally, I love the hunter class, I have several of them (and Locks).
BeastMaster with 5 points concuss, if you are going to BG you will want a boar for BG's, else wise I prefer Cats and I always go with a profession that does not require tracking because I use my humanoid tracking extensively on PvP server.
I use alts for my gathering that requires tracking.

Post 40 you MAY want to wear mail (although I've seen some hunters who still opt for a few pieces of leather for the better stats)...the good news is that Leather Working has patterns for mail. And right now...with everybody trying to screw up the Auctioneer database with false pricing...I've just been making steady income with the clefthide leg armor patches.

Naw, you will be able to make stuff after 40, I went dragonscale, but I have heard that tribal is pretty good as well. And you will want to keep skinning because when you get over to the new lands, you can make a killing on skins and armor kits....:)
BTW, get your 5 points concuss first thing...my advice anyway.

I don't understand why fellow hunters never show any love for the scorpid  I love my scorpid. If your playing PVE scorpids are great tanks and they have a sweet degen skill. The scorpid get a +10% armor bonus. I put my against 3-4 things several levels higher than him and he handles it like a champ. I ditched my cat as soon as I got my scorpid and never turned back.

To be perfectly honest, I quit using a scorpid because I did not like the sound that came with Food o Matic for that pet.
I play on a PvP server and dash for my cat is pretty nice to chase down fleeing alliance, but I have been thinking of getting one of the ravager thigns in the new lands.
