View Full Version : What to play next?

Sorry for another one of these, but I could use some advice.

I've played my main, Undead Warlock, to 70 and can't decide what to play next. I love my warlock very much but would like to start another character to get to 70 with. I prefer PvE over PvP, I do the occasional BG and might start some arena, but usually I do quests, dungeons and raids. I'm probably about 80% PvE, 20% PvP.

I've played each class a bit, the most on my lock obviously. My preferences are DPS>Tanking>Healing, but hey, I might be surprised. I love doing damage, but don't like burning up my mana with too much burst damage (that's why I'm Affliction specced.) I don't mind tanking, and I'll heal on occasion, but I wouldn't want it to be full time. I prefer magic over melee and I'm basically looking for a really fun class. Here's my views on the classes I've played so far..

Druid: Played to 15, quite alot of fun. I haven't even got cat form though so I can't totally judge it. I actually find them sort of weak when soloing now though, good in groups usually. I would spec Feral or Balance and heal occasionally.

Hunter: Played to 10 just so I could try it with pet, but the first 9 levels were HELL. It's sort of fun, a bit to EZ mode for me though (yeah yeah I play a lock.) It's not bad, but I can't really see myself playing one all the way to 70, could change though.

Mage: Played to 12, and it's pretty good. Obviously I like doing magic DPS so it works well. Survivability isn't a problem, but I burn up my mana and have to drink after dropping just a few mobs.

Paladin: Played to 8, not bad. I like the persona they represent - "People Who Hate to Lose" because that's totally me. I don't mind tanking/damaging but I'd rather not go Holy with him. A bit slow, but not bad. I like being built to outlast my opponent. Although I wouldn't be too fond of rolling a BE.

Priest: Only played one to 6, so I can barely judge the class. :P If I specced shadow I think I could have a good time, but not rolling healbot. I think s-priests are similar to locks, so it may be repetitive but I may enjoy it alot.

Rogue: Played one to 6. I'm not really a melee guy so they aren't exactly up my alley. I like the damage though. I don't think the "quick killing/assassination" is really me. Still a possible next character though.

Shaman: Played one to 18, quite fun. I like the Enhancement and Elemental trees. I'm not so sure if I'd be welcome end game though, for not being a healbot. I was reading the shammy forums and it was quite discouraging, everyone was QQing about how underpowered and unwanted they are. Of course it's all opinion so I might find it different. I do find them slightly weak when soloing, and decent in groups. I'm not sure if they're focus, totems, are all that useful though.

Warlock: My 70 main. Love them and my favorite class so far. I was a Necromancer on GW back a couple years ago so that's what I instantly rolled on WoW. I love the utility, damage and overpoweredness. :D I did consider rolling another for PvP since I love locks so much, would like to try something different though.

Warrior: Played to 6, alright. I actually liked the charging in and building up my rage points to deal damage though. I could level Fury and go prot end game and become a tank, sounds fine to me. I'm not sure how they are though at mid-game and end-game.

Opinions are welcome from experts of each class. Remember I want a fun class that's not tooo overplayed and unwelcome. I prefer magic damage, but I'm willing to try any class. So please give me your input on what you would advise I play next. Ask any questions necessary, all help is welcome.

Thank you very much for your time.

If you think the druid is fun by level 15, keep going a few more levels with it. At 20, you get cat form, and from that point on, your leveling speed will skyrocket. They are a great class in that if you get tired of playing in one tree, you can respec and have a completely different playstyle with another tree!

The balance spec imo is kind of boring, just because you only really have 2 nukes to work with, and it can get very repetetive fast. Needs more spells imo. The healing tree on the other hand, is just great, and probably the most versatile of any of the healing classes. Then of course there is bear form and cat form, both of which I like very much. Mix them all together, and it makes for alot of variety.

For pvp, they have the advantage of being able to be in the form that is the other classes worst nightmare, making them one of the best classes for a 1v1 situation, only really behind a lock IMO. Having played a bunch of different classes into the 40s, I can definitely say that the druid ended up being my favorite out of them all, and I think it is because of their ability to do just about anything needed.

Oh, and from about 45 on, they are one of the classes that is always being asked to join a group, whether it be for healing or tanking (or occasionally even a dps role!).

So yeah, I am going with the other guys here who said druid, especially since you seemed to like them during (in my opinion) the worst part of a druid's life (which is from 1-20).

I'd say 3 or 5, maybe 6 though

What is it with all the nearsighted or farsighted visitors to the forum today?

Yes, that will likely be the last bump, because if you bump it again you will likely pull back a bloody stump. Re-read forum rule number 6. For your convenience I will report it here. Ah, my apologies. I said report, not repost as I had intended. You can tell what is on my mind tonight.

6. Thou Shalt Not Engage in Unnatural Bumping. We have a "bump up" feature, where the post with the most recent addition goes to the top of the forum listing. If your post is good, it'll be responded to. If it's responded to, it'll undergo the process we call Natural Bumping. Natural Bumping = good. Unnatural bumping = bad. Unnatural Bumping is where someone posts, "I'm adding this to put this thread back at the top." Do it, we slap your hand. Do it often, you pull back a bloody stump.

As to your preternaturally bumped query - I would cast my vote for a Druid as well. They are a versatile and powerful class.

As a Druid at around L56 I must add:

Most of your dps comes from playing like a rogue (Cat Form). That is: stealth up to enemy and do fast damage. The difference is that, when things get hairy, you can heal, go bear and tank it out. A rogue'd have to stun the heck out of everything/vanish.

Just to be different - go paladin.

Definately, if you like the magic approach: go paladin or shaman

As I said, Druid dps mostly plays like a Rogue (which you didn't like that much)

Ahhh... contraire. Feral may be the common spec for a druid but this is one class that does well in any spec. Feral spec = Rogue or Warrior (dps as cat or tank as bear), resto = Holy Priest (tree form ftw), balance spec = mage. The OP will probably LOVE playing a BOOMkin. Balance spec with a splash of resto - it's like a mage with leather and massive armor buffs who can also heal themselves.

Force of Nature (41 pts balance) has got to be one of the COOLest spells in the game - 3 Treants go tear up everything in their path for 30 seconds.

Not only that but you get the added benefit of the Moonkin form /dance ftw

Having just rolled a Druid on a PvP server (one of the guys in the internet cafe I use said I should try his PvP server when I told him I was thinking of rolling a druid on my server) I did and he gave me a 5G gift to get started (now got 10G and am lvl 14 AH is your friend) I am loving every moment of it cannot wait for 20 and cat form :)

Well...if you like dps casters, why not go with a mage? My first 70 was a mage and I'm very happy with him.

You will alway have a spot for pve, and frost mages do great in pvp.

Yes, you will have to drink, but as you level you will get ways to conserve your mana when questing/grinding and burst when pvp:ing.

Good, clean, straightforward fun if you ask me 8-)

Druid...great fun too, but - even though they are versatile - as has been said you will have to melee as cat for the most efficient leveling, and are pretty much forced to either tank or heal at endgame unless you are in a very generous guild.

Thanks for the help. I've basically narrowed it down to Shaman, Mage and Druid. I'm going to keep leveling them together until I see which stands out and I want to play next.
