I have a spare GB of DDR PC3200 which I'm going to give to someone. He has a GB of the exact same RAM (right down to the make and model) currently, but one of the modules is faulty and so he has it underclocked to run at PC2700 speed (166MHz rather than 200MHz) which makes it stable.

I'm thinking he'd be better off adding mine to his and running 2GB at 166 than removing his and just running my 1GB at 200. He uses it for some games and general web/office type stuff.

Full spec with some of my other parts is:
Athlon 64 3000+
Radeon X800XL (I thought this was a 256MB card but actually dxdiag says 512MB?)
EPoX EP-9NPAJ (I've checked, it can take the extra memory)

Thoughts?

Also his 64 3000+ is a Winchester, mine is a Venice. Worth the hassle to change it for sake of a little bit less power use and a bit less heat? He won't be overclocking it.

I must say, mixing ram is rarely a good idea. Even more so, when one of the existing modules is already faulty at its designed speed. I'd rather have one married and identical set of sticks, rather than a mix and match any day. In this case, it's probably better to put in your one gig and take out the old stuff.

Changing to CPU will probably do little, unless the heatsink was installed pretty badly the first time over, or he fancies doing a little overclocking experimentation like I used to fiddle around with one of my socket 754 Athlon 64 rigs. More headroom and such.

They're basically matched though, it's the exact same make and model. I realise this isn't the same as a matched pair kit but most of the time when you buy a standard double pack of stock speed RAM it's not matched pair anyway, there's nothing special about those two particular sticks, so my two should be as similar to his two as they are to each other, no?
