I'm looking in to getting a new video card but I need to know how to check which connection I have, the pci or agp thing.

I don't have my system specs since Im posting from work but was hoping someone could suggest a good card around the 400$ or less range.

I do know I have a HP media center 2gb I bought it a little over a year ago.

Grab CPU-Z:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
It's a tiny download and doesn't need to be installed.
Get your motherboard make and model from it.
Post it here and we can check or look it up yourself to find the specs on it.

I'm guessing at prices since I'm in the UK but I think a Geforce 8800GTS 320MB would be roughly in that price band (they're £170-190 here).
