View Full Version : Using keyboard macros = ToS violation?

I was just curious if anyone had any information about this. I recently picked up a Logitec G11 keyboard, which has 18 macro-able keys on the lefthand side. Now, it comes with a standard set of WoW keystroke macros built into the keyboard software - autorun, character info, pet attack, open talents, etc. The real reason that I hope to use it, though, is to map standard macro functions (ie., /cast Holy Light) to the new keys. To give you an idea of what I'm working with:

The keyboard (http://www.logitech.com/repository/120/jpg/590.1.0.jpg)
The key mapper utility (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a245/XenoMan01/Logitechkeyboardmapper.jpg?t=1191272417)

I really just want to have more keys to map, but I worry that the fact that the keyboard uses the Logitech program to set the macros, rather than WoW itself, would trigger some sort of "THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE!" alarm. On the other hand, it comes with pre-written macros (ie., "roll for loot" (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a245/XenoMan01/Rollforlootmacro.jpg?t=1191272663) - /random 100), so my hope is that as long as the macro doesn't include a "delay" function, which would make it seem like botting, I should be ok. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to bind the keys in the "Key Bindings" menu of WoW, so it'd have to be done through the Logitech software.

Does anyone have any sort of experience / insight with this sort of thing?

I have no insight as such, but know that a lot of my guildmates use that keyboard without trouble for months...if this helps you at all.

I also use the G11 keyboard, and the answer is no it is not a ToS violation. there was actually an article published on a very reliable website, (I will not name it due to not knowing if it is ok or not) that blue's had confirmed that using that keyboard is not a ToS violation.

From what I've read here and on the official forums, Blizzard is mostly concerned with keys programmed to hit sequences with delays in them, because that's automating more than they care for. Things like perfectly timing a chain of abilities triggered by a single button, or a perfect jumpshot.

My suggestion would be to map the 18 extra keys to key codes you don't normally use, like ctrl-alt-[a-r], and then bind what you want to those keystrokes, though I admit that I haven't tried that, so I'm not sure it would work well.

Bliz doesnt care if you use the G11, G15, or the N52 speed pad.
But what they do care about is HOW you use it. A good rule of thumb is
if you can't make the macro using the in game macro function, then
dont program the keyboard to perform that macro.

IE: what i do is write the macro using the in game function. Test it out
and make sure it works, then duplicate/copy it into the key board soft ware. Stear clear of 1) time delays and 2) bultiple tasks with 1 button push. as in; push button once = action 1 -> action 2 -> action 3 IS BAD
but push button once = action 1, push button twice = action 2, push button thrice = action 3. IS GOOD

I use the G15 and N52 speed pad as well as the G5 mouse and have never had a problem with this meathod.

Enjoy.

Just jumping on the bandwagon here, as long as you use it within the same confines as the ingame macro system allows, you'll be fine.

I used my G15 to just trigger ingame macros, it was easier for me. Bound it to weird keys like ctrl-****-alt-12345 etc and bound those to ingame macros.

I thought that there was a way to delay using the ingame macro? Im sure I saw a macro for totems that had a delay built in?

No, there's not, that's something the developers specifically want to avoid, and one of the things that might get you into trouble if you use the Nostromo, for example, to do.

ctrl-****-alt-12345
You have a key on your keyboard I don't think I want on mine. At least, if I ever got that on my keyboard, I'd clean it off before I touched it again.

I couldn't help myself...

yep, as others have said, don't do anything you can't do through the ingame macro system. I don't use macros on my g15, but I do map the keys. I know a lock that was talking about having a 'dot em up' macro on a g15... that is clearly against the TOS.

I picked up the G15 a couple of months ago and I don't feel I'm using my G buttons to their fullest. I only use them for macros such as target, assist and such.

Anyone have any cool macros they have worked out that they can't live without?

if it is a macro, it is per definition NOT cheating. It is build in the game by the producers. They want us to use it.

stop the phobia.

an in game macro is not cheating.

a macro written with the G15 software could be cheating.

Assigning in game marcos to G15 extra keys is not cheating

Is it only macros that can be assigned to the G11/15? Can you bind normal game functions to them as well?

yes, you can asign any key or key combo to the extra keys... so you can assign a cnrl-alt-num5 to a macro, and bind that function to one of the extra keys. I do this all the time... the thing you can't do is write macros with the G15 software that do things the ingame macro system prevents... i.e. a lock can't write a macro to apply all dots to a target with a single key stroke.... although it can be done with the G15 macro capability, it's illegal in the game.
