View Full Version : General/Trade Channel

I thought this question would be best asked in the newbie forum, since it seems such a silly question to me.

In my chat log I often see messages that are sent through the general/trade/local defence channels. Yesterday I wanted to reply to one question asked in the general chat, but no matter how I searched and tried, my efforts were useless. I just can't get my messages to be posted on one of the public channels, and instead they're all uttered as /say.

I just KNOW that there's something easy that I overlooked, but I really can't find it. Could someone tell me how I can chat in these channels (and, quite important, how I can leave them again should I desire so)?

You automatically enter the main channels in your area, which is General and Local Defense everywhere and Trade and Guild Recruitment in major cities. If you wish to leave something, type /leave chatnumber(the number that is before the chat name, for example general is /leave 1) If you wish to join something, type /join chatname(for example /join general, if you've left it earlier) You dont need to /join a channel you can already read, and you dont need to /leave if you wish to say something in say, party or guild.

To speak in the different chats, you need to start your message with that chat's number. So to say in general, /1 yourmessage, for trade /2 yourmessage and so on. Same as with switching from say /s to party /p or guild /g. Unlike party and guild, every time you want to say something in the public channels you need to begin your message with it's number, so if you wish to stop messaging there just dont type /chatnumber before your message and it'll go back to say, party or guild, whichever you were using earlier.

Hope you understood what I'm trying to say.

I sympathize with the original poster--the WoW interface is usually pretty friendly and usable, but there are some complexities. For example, to reply to party msgs all you have to do is press Return and write; you can reply to a whisper by clicking on the name of the sender, but neither of these things works with general channels. You'd assume they would.

There's also something about the Looking for Group window (default i) that has me confused. I click on "Quest" and then select the quest from a list of quests designated as "group,' and press okay, but the message which appears in general chat has my name, but no info about the quest I selected. I don't know if the name of the quest appears on the chat logs of other players, but it doesn't appear on mine. Usually I have to go to /say and just annoy the players around me with my plea.

The simplest answer is this:

If its in general chat - number 1 channe, just type /1

/no. of channel you want to talk in.
Then press space.
Then type your message.
Then press enter.

When you join /4 (LFG), you are the only person who receives a visual confirmation of the joining.

The only way for others to know you are LFG/LFM is if they are also LFG/LFM, and in /4, and you advertise in /4, and they see your message; or by looking in the Looking for More tab of the LFG interface.

Hmm. So I go to the LFG window, select my quest (or arena or whatever) and that signs me up for the LFG channel--and what happens? Do I write a request on that channel, or is it that anybody else opens his LFG window and selects the same quest sees my character's name? I'm still confused...

Ah, so you have to write the numer first. Now I get it, thanks.

But.. is it just me, or is that not explained anywhere at all?

It isn't explained anywhere, it took me a while to work out how to do it but I was sure there must be an easy way so jsut kept trying different /join things until I got the one that worked.

If you put into the LFG window that you are looking for a group for say Deadmines; other people will be able to see that you are looking for a group for that dungeon in the LFM section of that window. If they are also LFG and have selected LFG Deadmines in their window you will be automatically matched to their group.

the prob with wow constantly changing and updating is that the manual that comes with the game is woefully vague so i doesn't outdate to much.

The best way to learn the game is simply to ask players as you go. The vast majority are amazingly helpful.

Failing that post here!

Joining and Leaving Channels:

To join a channel, type /join followed by the full name of the chat channel.
For example: /join trade
To leave a channel, type /leave followed by the full name of the channel you wish to exit.
For example: /leave lookingforgroup
Alternatively, you can leave a channel by using the hotkey number that it is assigned to.
For example: /leave 1

Creating a Channel:

To create a channel, type /join followed by the name of the channel you wish to create. If no channel by that name exists, one will be created for you. Others can then join your channel with the join command."
