View Full Version : Track Beasts - not working properly?

I just started with a Draenei Hunter, and I thought the Track Beasts option was quite an outcome. According to some help site, it'd show all surrounding beasts on my mini-map.
Well, it doesn't. All I can see are the Vale Moths, and the other enemies in my vicinity (Volatile Mutilations, Mutated Owlkins) don't appear.
Am I wrong in thinking that all monsters will show? And if so, how can I change the type of beast that is tracked? I don't care for those moths, especially since they're not hostile, but I'd really like to be able to tell where the creatures who ARE hostile reside.

Yes, it will indeed show you all beasts in the area around you, but not all monsters in wow are beasts. Some are humanoids, demons, elementals etc etc. If you put your mouse pointer over a monster, you should see a name of the mob and what kind it is. Eventually you will as a hunter, learn to track different kind of monsters. "Track humanoids" is the next thing you will learn I belive. You will never be able to track all kinds of monsters at the same time though. You can only have one tracking running at the time. Hope this helps you some :)
Best regards

Oh, I see. I reckoned that a Mutated Owlkin would also be a Beast type, since it looks like a bear. Oh boy, do I feel like a ditz now. :p
Thanks. Now that I've traveled some more, I see that other kinds of beasts also appear there. Wow, that's a lot of dots all at once. Is there a way to turn off tracking without having to die? I can't seem to figure this out.

Hmm, I've never felt the need to disable tracking totally, as my hunter can also turn on track treasure or track minerals (both non-class things), and I'm never averse to seeing some veins to mine.. So I don't actually know. However, you could always turn on another kind of tracking which will give you fewer blips, like track giants, or track hidden (once you learn them).

To turn it off simply click the icon again, but as moopy says i cant see why you'd want to do that.
When travelling around the map tracking allows you to skirt around hotspots and get preped for a upcoming scrap. As a hunter know what you are about to come across is your biggest perk.
It also helps to avoid trouble in PVP.

You appear to have mistyped "helps you to find trouble" :-)

It's amazing what Blizzard consider to be "humanoid".... :-)

Stupid questions do not exist, only stupid answers!

I know what you mean; my Rogue has both treasure and herbs to track (which I love, so I always have one or the other switched on). However, my Hunter has no other tracking abilities at the moment, and sometimes it gets annoying to see a large number of red dots on my minimap. It can be distracting, especially when I'm just trying to find my way around.
Bearbehind, I tried switching it off by clicking on it, but that doesn't work. If I click on the icon attached to the minimap nothing happens, and when I click on the icon on the [P] screen it only reactivates - whether it's with the left or right button. The only way to turn it off seems to be by dying, or perhaps logging out (not sure about that last one).

Hmm interesting, I know thats how to turn of Aspects, i assumed that tracking was the same.
I'd just activate herbs/treasure over the top then...

I have to admit.. I have no idea, sorry :) My hunter is a dwarf, so I've always been able to track treasure- and in her case, minerals too. Interested as to what the answer is though, I bet it's something simple.

Thats the thing being a Dwarf hunter with mining. When do you switch tracking? Especially on a PvP server. Treasure/minerals/beasts/humanoids/undead/giants/elementals etc. On my Dwarf I usually have track humanoids up and the Paladin I play with is also a miner. No surprise who has the better mining skill there then ;)

I found this very annoying when I was looking for the guy to give a quest to...I could't find him because I was in an area where there was several treasure sites and over a mine where there was lots of veins. I could switch from one to the other but not turn both off. Yes, I could turn on Track Beasts, and that's a solution, but it would be better if I could just turn them off.

Just checked for you folks. Right click on the icon attached to the mini-map makes it go away and you get the: find X ability fades, message.

When I want to turn off tracking I "activate" the active tracking ability again and this toggles all tracking off.
ie. click Track Beasts to track beasts, click it again to turn off all tracking.
This works for me, but I can not guarentee that this feature was not added by one of the many mods that I use..
