First post ever...just wanna say hi to everyone first

ok back to the questions...I'm getting WOW next week, tried the 10-day trial a month ago, I'd like to get all the questions I have out of the way before I start:

1. Since I don't have a particular guild I wanna join yet, I might just play solo for a few levels...as for the large number of realms, I should choose the realms (PVE) that have high population right? That way I'll have an easier time grouping or finding a guild in that realm

2. Say I have two characters in the same realm, and I want to transfer some gold from one to the other...is the only way of doing that is let someone else in the realm holds it for you, while you log in with the other character?

3. I think my main will be a frost mage (human)...How long will it roughly take to get to level 40? (cause i wanna get a mount ASAP lol)

4. Generally it's better to buy weapons and armors from Auction house than armor vendors (the ones that sell white colored items) right? I couldn't try out the AH on the trial account I played

I think that's all the questions I can think of now...Thanks!

Too much of a personal opinion answer really. Not going to burn my fingers with that one.

2. Say I have two characters in the same realm, and I want to transfer some gold from one to the other...is the only way of doing that is let someone else in the realm holds it for you, while you log in with the other character?

Best way? You mail it from your character A to your character B.
Same applies to items, and both gold and items will be mailed immediately. Maling things to others introduces a 1 hour delay before a person gets the money/item(s)

3. I think my main will be a frost mage (human)...How long will it roughly take to get to level 40? (cause i wanna get a mount ASAP lol)

Varies per person, so there's no one standard answer for that one.

4. Generally it's better to buy weapons and armors from Auction house than armor vendors (the ones that sell white colored items) right? I couldn't try out the AH on the trial account I played

Sortof, sometimes vendors will sell green items which can also prove quite useful. Example, there's a vendor in the Ghostlands who sells throwing knives with +2 agi. The only other equivalent green level items are the bronze darts +2 str, which you can sometimes buy on the AH.

As a warrior, the darts are nicer, considering str does more for a warrior than agi does (even if it's a close contest at times). But for a rogue, the knives would be nicer, because agi does more for the rogue than strength does.

But checking the AH can prove to be useful, if an expensive hobby. Remember that mount? Well it'll cost you 90g to get it, and that includes the 10% discount you get from being at least honoured with the group you're buying the mount from. And if you're buying a mount from a group, consisting of another race then your own (say buying a Horse mount, when you're a dwarf), then you need to be exalted with them and that can take a bit, both in money and time.

1. This is largely a matter of opinion. I found a great guild and am actually very happy I chose a recommended server (low population). During peak hours the cities are still quite crowded and I actually find it easier to find groups because there are more new players whereas on the high population servers most low level characters are alts and rush through the old world to get to the outlands.

2. You can send gold to your other characters through the in game mail system (except horde can only send to other horde characters and alliance can only send to other alliance characters).

3. That is completely up to you... although I would suggest if you are in a hurry you start out as a fire mage for easier leveling then respec to frost at higher level.

4. No DON"T buy weapons and armor from the AH while leveling unless you want to be broke and unable to get your mount at 40. The quest rewards and instance drops should be good enough. The only exception would be if you found a really good deal for cheap on the AH and I would restict that to weapons only. In fact if you take up tailoring you can still take a gathering profession to bring money in and use cloth drops to skill up your tailoring and keep you in the best equipment all the time.

My wife is using this approach and is able to make armor much better than what she has gotten from drops and quest rewards most of the time - occasionally there will be a piece which is temporarily better than what she can make.

Sorry if others have already answered this stuff... I am at work and having been writing a sentence and a sentence there as I am able to at work... when I started there were no responses yet.

Zendarin, thanks for your response :)

As for your guild, what realm are you in? Still recruiting? I might consider joining your guild, if that's ok.

Thanks for the offer :) I'll probably join your guild about 2 weeks from now. One question about guild though...I like to play with both sides, probably a human mage, and an undead warlock...will this affect the guild in anyway? Since if a guild is Horde oriented, having an Alliance character doesn't help your guild at all, right?

It might be worth checking that you are all on the same RL continent. I can see from Zendarin's sidebar that s/he is from Seattle but there are no clues on Rottentomato's or Uwdaveh's sidebars to suggest where they are.

Uwdaveh it would be handy to know where in the world you are, as players in Europe cannot play in the same realms as those from the US or Asia without an awful lot of fuss and bother.

I'm in Canada, eastern time zone.

Oh, and just remembered another question...since I'll probably play for a few months, and then stop my subscription for a few months, then start again...is WOW like diablo 2, where if your account is inactive for too long, all your characters get deleted?

I am from Seattle but when I started I had no clue about server time zones so I just picked the first one recommended (which happened to be trollbane). Thus I wound up on an East Coast server. I typically am on somewhere within the 6 PM to 10 PM time frame and I have to say that at 10 PM (which is 1 AM EST) the server population is finally starting to drop so that you can find your way to an auctioneer with out having to force your way in through a crowd. Even at this late a time I typically see 4-6 people on in my guild - though you almost never see the high levels or officers on any more as they have just kept their alts in the guild and their lvl 70 mains have become part of a raiding guild. I guess this means that the friendly family type guild I am part of (Elune's Faithful) is now a "farm" guild (baseball term) for the raiding guild (whose name escapes me).

Yes we are still recruiting although I am not an officer. There are a lot of pretty new people in the guild (new to WOW that is) and since the officers and high lvls are typically elsewhere it's not as easy to get instant help as it once was yet it is still a very friendly and helpful environment. I try to uphold the attitude and helpfulness that permeated the guild when I first joined though.

We also have a web site up now with a helpful guide posted for new players (don't recall the URL off the top of my head and don't have it bookmarked at work).

Yes it is, but less than six months should be ok..

Blizzard says that they might delete chars if you cancel your subscription, but I've never actually heard of it happening.

It won't make good business sense. People won't come back after a break if their characters are gone.

They warn you that your characters MAY be deleted - but I have never known it to actually happen (yet). In fact they are offering the "scroll of resurrection" right now to get former players back in the game so they obviously still have the character files and this is after 2-3 years for some players.

Edit: LOL Kugan you beat me - posted yours while I was typing my response.

Great minds... :P.

But it's always good to have confirmation when you say things like "but I've never actually heard of it happening"

Thanks for the reply guys. I know it doesn't make sense lol, diablo 2 is like that because it's free on battle.net...but in WOW you already pay so much

My playstyle will be like 3 months of WOW, then suspend it for four months during study term, then play again during workterm or summer...lol

yea we are eastern time zone as well on zul'jin im about as far south as you can get from you.... florida but there are people always on...

yea its a horde guild, but i also have a lvl 40 rogue on alliance side on that server which i hardly play because alliance chat is a bunch of jokesters... you get the same thing unfortunately in the barrens, but luckily thats only 8 levels of your journey not 70...

the two names im always on... nitsuj and rottentomato of course ;) hope to see a message sometime
