The best items can't be bought. They are bind on pickup and come from big, smelly bosses.

The highest-rated items available to players are legendary (orange) items- the only lv 70 legendaries seen are the blades which Illidan drops- twin blades of Azzinoth (spelling? it's late :).

IMHO I think you should save us all a lot of time and go onto one of the many websites associated with the items of WoW, or even use the outfitter that is associated with this website, and do the research for yourself. Not really a great first impression to make at this site, especially if you intend on an extended stay...

First off, I'd recommend going to the Mage forums on this site and read the guides there. Then visit any sites that are recommended on that forum and see what you can learn from them.

Once you have an understanding of your class, the game and your role in it, you might be able to ask the right questions. So far the questions you've asked don't really have any definitive answers. Don't ask questions about the top-end game when you're new to WoW, ask about the issues facing your character at the moment.

Currently, the best mage staff in the game is the Odo Leys Staff, obtainable through the hard, and often forgotten fortress known as Shadow Fang Keep. This staff is guarded by a powerful Werewolf and his two enlarged bat minions. It takes a well diversified group of five adventurers to obtain said staff, and even if you succeed in slaying the formidable opponenent, chances are it will not drop. Thus, you will have to run this instance over and over again, through the werewolves and ghosts and ghouls, optionally slaying the horses as they rest in their stalls. Now then, as to your question, Generally Mages at high end game content, unless PVPing, utilize a mainhand Sword or dagger and an Off-hand of some sort. I couldn't tell you what is the current BEST weapon, as that relies heavily on your other stats. Aka, you may need to up your +hit or your +crit...or if you have those capped and are looking for your massive +dmg, then that could be a goal as well.

Currently, the highest +dmg from a sword is the Tempest of Chaos, dropped from Archimonde in Mount Hyjal.
