Hi.

Alright, so I bought a new computer from dell, Spec is :

OS: Vista home premium
Processor : AMD athlon(TM) 64 X2dual core processor 5000+ 2.61 GHZ
Memory : 2046MB
Graphics card : NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS

Its a 32 bit operating system.

Anyways the day I got it I decided I would install WoW and it was fine, patched up to 80% and then I hit a problem. My computer started 'Ticking' , the system shut itself down.

When I tryed to start it back up it wouldn't load know matter what I tried, so I gave dell a call.

We evetually had to restore it to factory settings, and I asked would it be ok if I tried again, he said yes it would be fine.

I tried again the next day and bam, same thing happened, accept this time worse, back on the the phone with dell and they said the patch had corrupted my hard drive, I told them how and they said its something to do with windows vista.

Anyway, they sent me a new hard drive out and my computer is running perfectly again.

I used systemquirements lab and the report said everything was above recommended. Even window vista.

I am now a scared of trying again incase the same thing happens, I know basics of a computer but I'm no genious and I haven't got a clue about windows vista as I have only had it a few days.

I asked if I could changed to XP, they said no as my system is designed only for vista...

Now I don't know where to go, one of the reasons why I bought this computer was for gaming.

I have the patches on a disc from my old computer so I do not have to download them again, but still, I am a little wary.

I was thinking it would be best to give blizzard a call anless you guys have any imput?

EDIT :(Dell also added, "World of Warcraft is not a compatable with windows vista", yet I'm sure a few people play it on Vista, and that was annoying.)

Thanks.

-Aaron

P:S, I've had WoW running on my old computer when I first got it which was a

1.3 GHZ pentium 3
256 Ram
hercules 32mb graphics card

The lag was horrible but it ran.

I then ran it on the same computer but upgraded to
512mb ram
256 mb radeon.

Which actually wasn't THAT bad.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think dell lied about your computer being only vista compatable. You should be able to install XP on it fine..But I would wait for an answer from Kalos or Tunga.

Well, I asked my dad, (He isn't a technician or anything but knows a little more than me) and he said, XP would most likely work but your warranty would go void.

And with my luck, that isn't a good thing.

Dell exact words were actually "Your system is specifically designed to work with vista"

and I'm guessing XP would cause a lot of problem and with a void warranty, that isn't to good.

Completely compatible with XP. Infact, all of the hardware in that computer were released BEFORE Vista hit the market, it had to be XP compatible otherwise it'd have been worthless. Actually, unless the motherboard has some funky propriatory rubbish over it, it was all designed for XP and works perfectly fine under it. However, Dell's custom configurations screw things up, adds an edge of unpredictability.

I can't say I've heard of this error before. Sounds like a faulty harddrive as the cause.

As an FYI unrelated to the error, the 8300 is an absolute dog for gaming, not made for it at all. A four year old FX 5700 beats it for performance. Absolutely useless.

I'd install it again, there's no reason that should happen and it was likely just a dud hard drive. Dell will try to blame it on anything they can. Don't let them, they have only their shoddy hardware to blame.

I have been running Guild wars on high detail on it and its been more than fine.

Thank you for the info. on XP, I'm going to get into contact with blizzard anyway.

are you running the patch as administrator? I dont think it would cause your comp to crash but ya never know with vista.

Call Blizzard - I had no trouble with installing it on two computers with Vista, but the patches were a pig. I called Blizzard and got some good useful help (I won't say what they suggested because all cases are probably different) and after that, no problems at all. A call to Blizzard costs money, to be sure, but the response was quick and I don't think it cost me that much at all.
