View Full Version : 10 Day Trail
I live in the UK and would like to try World Of Warcraft before I choose to buy it. I also own a Macbook. Is there a specific download I need in order to play the game because when I tried to install it it would not download the 3.something gigs, and do I also need something called a tracker? Also, if I do decide to buy it do I just buy the game (around £10 on Amazon) and thats it? Thanks for any help given.

I've never owned/used a Mac, but it sounds like maybe you don't have enough space on your computer's hard drive? If not, don't expect to get the full game unless you free up some serious disk space, as the full game, not including BC, is over 6 gigs.
OK, so I've just gone out and bought the game and installed it and everything. Now, when I login it says unable to connect. I am at uni presently and could I be right in saying that the admin could have blocked anyone who plays online games? I've changed the ports so let it through but still no luck. Please help.

Yeah the internet works fine. I've checked the ports and allowed port numbers 3724, 6112, 6881-6999. The firewall is also on. However this still does not help. Thanks for your info.

Check with your system admin. There's a chance that your Uni is blocking the requires ports/protocols as you say.

Most Universities block games like WoW as a matter of policy (cheaper for them that way). Down in Swansea, they'll basically cut you off if you try downloading anything above 100 MB, or use any P2P peices. Made playing impossible, even if it wasn't for the blocked ports, I've never made the patch days anyhow.

So do you mean that you just didn't play it? I'll contact the I.T guy tomorrow and ask him if there is anything he can do, also the campus where all the lectures take place has a different internet access so I'll try it down there aswell. Anyway, thanks for your help.

If the only access you have is the uni access then chances are slim you'll get to play. Most likely they'll work with a "block everything, unblock what's needed" policy, and no sane IT responsible will allow WoW on campus :)
Kalos means it was impossible to download the patches (often several hundreds of megabyte) due to systemrestrictions. You can't play if you don't have the latest patch.

In our Uni (Birmingham) our halls connections (which I didn't have but friends did) were very limited in terms of total transfer restrictions (both daily and monthly I think) so the larger patches sometimes proved difficult for people. But the ports were basically all open so the game connected fine. The trouble was that the latency was terrible and it wasn't playable between about 1500 and 2300 due to everyone on the campus network being online during that time.
Our Computer Science department was open 24-hours a day including weekends (great for when coursework deadlines were approaching!) and we could download infinite stuff there and stick it on a DVD/USB stick or even throw it on the scratch disk for later. And naturally it had great download speeds too so was very useful for downloading large files to take home.

if you're at a university, you're usually blocked. you can either get your own internet access, or, get your own internet access! haha. but you're basically SOL. in my school, there was a cafe that where you can rent a computer and play all your games. they had a monopoly on internet gamers on campus. i'll come in for my morning mocha latte and find the place already packed with Quake addicted folks. this was before WoW was even released. you might have to resort to that. good luck.

Not sure why you dragged this up after six months, I'm fairly sure he's not going to check back in now.
