I have a question about the random name generator alot of people seem to have under the box where you enter the characters name.

Is it a mod and if so where do you get it?

Thanks for your help.

It's not a mod. It took me a while before I figured this out as well, but it's a US thing. Guess they believe we Europeans are creative enough to come up with our own!

There are a whole bunch of name generators on the intarweb, though.

Apparently we in the U.S. need help.

I never use it myself. I usually go to a site like babynames.com or play with things like Gaelic-English dictionaries for inspiration.

It's U.S. only? Bah! How dumb. The names they give are dumb as well, generic ones and then some really ridiculous ones.

That is odd that they would do it for one and not the other though... just weird. Why would they do that?

The most irritating thing about it is it suggests names that are already taken!! The other day I was making a bank toon so I didn't give a rats what the name was. Because I didn't want to just use random letters as it would look too much like a gold seller it took me eight attempts before it suggested a usable name.

The Client generates the names from a base set, it doesn't know if these are available or not, it just provides them, its up to you to choose one and try.

(AN: All but one of my 10 characters was named via the random name feature :D)

It would be pretty simple for the client to validate the name with the server but I guess a few less requests helps with server performance.

It actually is because they think non-Americans are more creative. I had a blue friend tell me that during beta testing, the amount standard (read this as "names you'll see on a school roll call list") names requested for characters was staggering on the American side, but just a trickle everywhere else. Why someone who is attracted to the Warcraft universe choose John/Chris/Bob etc. for a character name is beyond me

Someone must have put a alot of job in giving those craters names.

My son's current main was named from the random name generator... Donatama. I think he kind of regrets it, because the toon was never supposed to be taken seriously, and now is. But, I must say that it's a better name than his previous toon's name... of Inuyasha. ?!? Yeah. UD Lock named that...it's a little depressing. My elder son named his original main after the gamertag he'd been using since he was 7. Gave us a human retadin named Sapper...who is consistently mistaken for a rogue. My gaggle have strictly roleplaying names...with a tendency to end with the letters "is"... Damaris, Erasmis, Amadis, and Semiramis. For every rule are the exceptions...I have a draenei priest named Ranith and a very low lock named Belaziel.

I do however find it fascinating that we are the only ones with saddled with the "Americans are too dumb to create our own #$%$ name" button. A little sad, but it's an amusing point for conversations. Me, I have two name sources... a huge baby name book and.... the Encyclopedia of Occultism. But then, I end up naming a lot of characters, in game and in story.

A few days ago I decided to delete my lowbie Troll Shaman and create a new one, only a female one this time. I had a lovely name in mind, an Irish goddess, but of course it was already taken.

I seriously spent half the night trying to search the net for a name that would suit my new toon, and after many fruitless attempts (of names that were already taken) I eventually ended up with Mulhalmoni.. apparently it's the Korean goddess of healing springs and the female patron of shaman women. How perfect is that for my little shammy girl, who'll grow up resto? ^^

I usually look up Latin translations of the characters functions. I have a priest(ess) called Curatiana.

sometimes i have such a time coming up with a name that i just say screw it and put in John, Bob, or whatever. I think a couple of my names came from the generator.

Tell me about it, you'd think they'd pick from a pool of available names.
