I have an account that I played almost a year ago. I have the login/pass and can get into it on WorldofWarcraft.com. After logging in, it looks like it has been hacked and characters moved, because my original characters aren't on the same servers (after searching through the Armory). Is there anyway to find out what is on that account before I start paying for it again? If my characters are lost, then I'd prefer not to pay the subscription fee, and just keep playing on my other account.

If they have better gear and have been levelled I suggest you go into your account, change the password and keep them!

I do believe that if you account is not active it will not show up on the armory. Are you sure that your toons are on another server? It would be pretty odd for someone to hack your account pay 25$ to transfer your toons and not change the PW. I would just activate the account you have, and i'm sure you'll be suprised at what you find. I mean heck it's only $15. Just take 2 less shot next time you are at the bar and you made that money back up......

I don't really think that someone who may have hacked your account would pay to have them moved to another server or wait and sign up for a free transfer if the account isn't even theirs. They would also have to start paying for the account again, which I doubt they did. It could just be an armory error.
You said that you think that they're moved - so they wouldn't be "lost".
Also, just as an example . . . http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=frankthetank&searchType=characters
all those pages of names are for "frankthetank" - they're probably all different people with different accounts on different servers that just happen to have the same name. If you see a char with the same name as you, that doesn't mean that it's even your account - jsut someone who liked the name you chose as well.
Just call or write Blizzard (this should have been your first action anyway) - they can answer questions about your account far better than we can (usually lol).

Well, the account has been active since I've played it. Last login was May and the address has been changed to somewhere in Nevada. Apparently, you can't change the email unless you have access to the old email or a driver's license that matches the original account holder. I say "lost" because my friends play on a PVP server, so if they transferred the characters to a PVE, then they are basically lost to me since you can't transfer them back to a PVP. I went in the character copy to test realm screen, and some of the characters on the account are showing up on some old servers that I played on, but nothing on the most recent servers that I played on which had the highest level character.

What? You can easily get your account back by providing blizzard with the original email address and CC# etc.

Ahhh, and here's where it seems the truth comes out. You gave your "friends" your account info? You stopped playing wow, then they decided you were never coming back and continued to play on the account? Is this about right?

No, when I say "they", I mean the hackers. My friends don't live in Nevada. I have the account. I have the email. I can login to the account on WoW's website. What I cannot do is see what the hackers did to my characters while they had it. I would like to do this before paying to renew the account.

I think you misunderstood him. He didn't give his friends anything. His friends play on a PvP server and he is worried the hacker transferred his toons to a PvE server. If they did, he won't be able to xfer back.
Anyway the best thing to do is 1st get the account info straightened out. Then activate it and see what you have. If you don't like what you see try to cancel with Blizzard and get your $15 back. If you can't get your $15 back, call your credit card company and have them remove the charge.
I was going to say that everything is probably fine but now that you said the billing address was changed I am not so sure.

Yeah I misunderstood the phrasing OP.
I would highly suggest contacting BLizz and explaining everything that you've described here and see if they can't check on your toons for you.

Haha. Now that would win the award for most amazing thing that ever happened in WoW. But if Blizzard ever found out they'd probably ban the account

Unfortunately, that's probably true.

How would they find out? Do they monitor the stats of every player? :)

Thus the statement of "If Blizzard ever found out..." One of the biggest words in the English language is "if".
