I normally avoid casters..not that I think they are 'poor' classes I just don't think I'd enjoy them too much.
Recently tho out of boredem I started a Mage and actually found to be enjoying it alot at the early stages. My girlfriend has a Dest Lock (70) which I recently watched her play in AB and the crit numbers and varity in spells looked pretty fun.
Being someone who doesn't particular like to level I know I could only get one to 70. I'd mainly be PvPing (hence posting in here) and hope for your personal insights. I realise these 2 specs may not be best for pvp but it would be a nice change to play a burst damage DPS character.
So for crits, varity in spells (especially in PvP) what character would you personally advise?

Warlock, but I'm biased. That, and after a fire mage blows his PoM Pyro in pvp, he's pretty much done.

if you want pvp a fire mage will be very frustrating, because cast times are not usually something allowed. 3 second improved fireball cast time is an eternity (and get the 6 second pyroblast cast time out of your mind).
there is the infamous PoM/Pyro build, which is a mix of arcane talents down to the arcane power, prescence of mind, spell power, and fire talents down to pyroblast, and this gives you an instant cast meganuke with 1/3 more damage than usual. on my mage when i go for this build i'll reguarly crit at around 5700, which is very nice, especially if you can hide in a corner somewhere, cast a pyroblast (all 6 seconds), then PoMPyro (instant cast pyro), and then instant cast fire blast. that can all lead to back to back 5500+ crits followed immediately by a 3k crit. plus ignite which does another 40% of the crit damage as a DoT.
That is a TON of damage. but you better have killed whatever it is you aiming at.. because you have no tricks left in your bag.
my typcal pvp build is 17/0/44, which is pretty standard deep frost pvp. there is some variation within the build to lean more defensive or more offensive. all in all its a high survivability mage build with very burst damage, and some excellent utility.
mages are great fun in pvp, but can also be very frustrating.
but then practice makes all things easier.
have fun.

Soul Link / Syphon Life warlocks are in the trinity of most most overpowered classes in the game right now, right along with warriors and druids.

Oh yeah cause all fire mage's have pom... Thats retarded to say there. And done after POM? lol ok believe what you want but you must play against pretty crappy mage's that relay on a big crit. I play POM and I only use it if i'm getting into trouble, and i like to get 5 scorches off first for some uber burst damage. Scorch DPS>Warlocks dots. Thats all i'm going to say.

both of those are horrible PvP spec's. Fire mages and dest. locks are the squishiest of the squishy...seriously. That said, if you must choose between those two classes, I'd have to say to go with the lock. The pet, in addition to deathcoil and immunity to shadow and fire will prove very helpful. After ice block becomes a trainable skill, though...fire mages may experience a solid resurgence.

True story, both are awful. As a pyro mage you're pretty much useless for 2 minutes unless your opponent decides to wait 6 seconds before attacking, and as a destro lock you'll be oom before you know it. I can't even suggest one, because both are bad. Go frost/arcane mage for pvp, it p-w-ns
