On a roleplay server the minimum you need to do is pretend the real world actually doesn't exist.
If you DO need to say something that is "out of character" you use (( and )). But don't overdo it. Longer stuff needs to be conveyed through whispers.
Try and make up an ingame reason for doing things...

You need to respec? Talk about turning your life around.
You need to log off? Talk about how an urgent matter has come to your attention.
As a Tauren have initial mistrust in Blood Elves and Undead.
...

It helps to read the backstory.

Then you can take it to the next level and devise a story for your character. Why has he left his starting area? Is it the cheesy "I must avenge my mother's death from when I was a young lad" or can you be more creative? Think of some defining ingame things that you always display as to support your story.
The "roach vendor" from your link probably had a roach mini-pet active as often as possible. Maybe he has made a one-man guild called "Roach Vendor" so as to be easily recognized as such.

Once you have gotten accustomed to the mindset of whatever you have chosen stick to it. If you made a brute that isn't too bright try and keep it to low-level talk and lots of macho behavior. If there's something complicated explained pretend you didn't get it.

Say said brute does an instance. His group-mates will need to keep in mind that convulated tactics can best be kept out of the way and just point your guy to the mob that needs it's skull bashed in the most.

lol but how do they pvp? or maybe they dont? I saw a warlock in tanaris yesterday and whenever she summons her steed she would yell:

I am calling a steed from hell or something :D Made me laugh because i play on pvp server not rp and alot of ppl on my server hate rp'ers :D

rp'ers are hated on by people on my server (rp-pvp) i'm not sure why. There really isn't much RP and other than the naming rule I don't think you could tell the difference. Occasionally you see people sitting around a camp fire or walking instead of running but its rare.

The naming limits are what I like about it, for some reason silly names are one of the few things that bug me.

I'm thinking the general hate towards roleplayers stems from the "high bull****" rate of whatever they say. They won't just ask for the inn, no, they'll say like a whole load of stuff and eventually, though gradually, get to their point.

Generally people wanna get on with it and therefore adopt a no-bull**** attitude thus posing themselves quite on the opposite of the spectrum. To them, levelling is slow enough without having to pay head to some rambling fool who'd rather make up stories than get to the frikkin' point.

Well, that's what I think anyway. I'm not a roleplayer nor do roleplayers bug me in any way. But then again, (according to my wife) I'm not always very straightforward either .

I don't know why anyone would care if others are roleplaying. If you don't like the way someone is talking, you /ignore. If they won't give you directions, ask someone else.

Half the players in the game are obnoxious without RP being involved at all.

interesting. when my lock frist did that I was like "wtf!?"

it's actually something all locks say (I think). Depending on the mods they have, when they summon their minions/mount, they'll say things like that.

*shrug* I say stuff like "Excuse me, could you direct me to the nearest inn please?" which is largely what I'd say in real life.

I think the key to RP is to consider how your character would speak if they were really alive. Sure your character can have a convoluted backstory and make RP stories up but, to be honest, that does nothing much for me. It's also worth pointing out that /party chat is only very very rarely in-character, as instances aren't the best RP environments in my opinion.

RP Servers PvP the same as PvE servers. /pvp to turn it on, attack a pvped person, or help a pvped person.

One thing I've noticed about RP servers is that players are generally more laid back, even if they don't give a damn about RPing. Something like a bad pull that ends in a wipe or an unnecessary hard fight can get you booted from a group in non-RP servers will usually just get an "it's okay" and "try not to do it again" from your party in RP servers.
