I've been checking various WoW sites and can't find the answer to this..... If you buy a slot in a bank and place, say, a 12 slot bag in it, can you later take that bag out and put a bigger one in? Or does that lose you that slot and mean that you have to pay all over again for the space?

Once you paid for the slot, you don't lose it.

You'll always keep the space, indeed. The other day I replaced my12-slot Herb Pouch with a Mooncloth Bag that was a gift to me - I dumped the pouch in a bank slot because it mostly carries herbs that I can't use for alchemy yet (annoying how it won't work if your herb is some 40 points above your alchemy).

Once you buy the slot you can put any size bag in it and swap that bag out at anytime. (i.e. upgrade your 12 slot bags with 14 or 16 or 18 slot ones as they become available) This is also very handy if for instance you have 2 gathering professions but only want to carry one of your "specialty" bags with you at a time. You can swap your herbalism bag from your inventory with the mining bag in your bank, without having to empty either one.

But the one thing I still don't understand.....
I can put an empty 14 slot bag inside a 10 slot bag, along with an 8 ft long polearm and a complete set of mail armor and a stack of 20 gold bars, and it all fits. BUT...if I remove the armor, the gold and the polearm, and try to stick a single murloc eye in the 14 slot bag, it is now too big to fit back inside the empty 10 slot one.

If they let you do that then you can cheat with infinite spaces by placing bags (non-empty of course) within bags

Yes, you can only put empty bags inside other bags. Strange though, that you get a 'too big' error rather than that message.

Thanks, all. I find the professions that create things generate such a huge amount of 'stuff' that extra slots in banks are necessary. Nice to know that, having bought it, I own it.

Ooo, That means I could put all my engineering crap in an engineering-only bag (those exist by now right?) in my bag and free up some generic bank space !!
